Douglas Wichita, KS (316) phone (316) fax Dear IB Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the East High International Baccalaureate Program. Please use the checklist below to guide you through the IB application process. It is your responsibility to check with your teachers, counselor, and middle school registrar/secretary to ensure that they have submitted the requested information. If you have any questions, please call Teacher references are due in the IB Office by Friday, January 12, Please check directly with your teachers to ensure that they have sent your references. Your completed application including transcript & 1 st semester report card is due in the IB Office on Thursday, January 18, East High Visit ( Shadow ) (This is not required, but we encourage students to visit for a day as the shadow of a current IB 9 th grade student and learn what it s really like to be in IB at East High. Please call at least three days in advance to arrange a visit.) Testing: Reservations required. Call the IB Office at to reserve your testing date. Please call early: space is limited at each testing session. Applicants take critical thinking and writing tests. There is no fee for admissions testing. Testing dates are: Saturday, January 13, :00 a.m.-12:00 noon or 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 20, :00 a.m.-12:00 noon only Location: East High School / West Complex Door 34 (See map on reverse side.) Application form: Complete all parts of the application packet and return to the IB Office as soon as possible. Admissions agreement (A copy is enclosed for your records) Students who are invited to join the IB Program & a parent will be asked to sign a copy during the interview process. Three current classroom teacher references as follows: one from a language arts or social studies teacher, one from a math or science teacher and one from a teacher of the student s choice from an academic class (i.e., not office or teacher assistant). Teachers should not return references to the student, but should send them directly to the IB Office through interschool mail, U.S. mail, or fax ( ). Please check directly with your teachers to ensure that they have sent your references by Friday, January 12, Be sure to thank your teachers! Middle school transcript (Parent must request that your middle school send this to the IB Office.) Report card for 1 st semester of current year (Parent must request that your middle school send this to the IB Office.) Interview (After the selection committee reviews all applications, certain students will be invited to interview with an IB staff member. The interview is required in order to complete the application process, be accepted and enroll in IB. The IB Office will mail letters to all applicants around February 10 notifying them of their status. Those applicants who are not invited to interview may ask to be placed on a waiting list. Interview dates are Saturday, February 24 and Saturday, March 10, 2018.)

4 When students attend the admissions exam session, they will be asked to provide information about their areas of interest and extra-curricular activities. This information will NOT be graded as an aspect of the application, it will simply provide an authentic perspective of each individual student. The information provided, WILL be read by members of the selection committee and used to help decide the final group of students to invite to interviews. Students will be asked to write essay style responses to the following three prompts: 1. Describe one weakness or shortcoming that you have and explain how you strive to overcome it. 2. Describe a meaningful relationship with an adult in your life, explaining the significance of the relationship to your success. 3. Referencing the IB Learner Profile (provided on a separate sheet of paper), consider one of the following attributes; Inquirers, Principled, or Reflective. Write a thorough description how one of these attributes is evident in your life; provide concrete examples of what it looks like to others as they observe you day to day. These prompts are provided ahead of time in the application packet to enable students to think through their responses ahead of time. However, notes will not be accessible when they write their responses; a student s ability to communicate their responses authentically in writing will be considered important.

Douglas Phone (316) Wichita, KS Fax (316) ADMISSIONS AGREEMENT The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a rigorous liberal arts curriculum designed for academically able students who have the potential to earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma. To succeed in IB, students must be dedicated learners. Therefore, the IB staff requires the following commitment be made. I agree to the following terms and conditions for participating in the International Baccalaureate program. I will: 1. follow all rules of Wichita High School East as outlined in the student agenda. 2. actively participate in class daily by being prepared, listening attentively, offering relevant comments, posing insightful questions, taking notes, etc. In short, I agree to meet the expectations set forth for each course. 3. work seriously to improve my writing skills: writing, editing, rewriting, asking for assistance outside the class period, etc. 4. schedule vacations and other recreational trips only during school holidays and abide by USD 259 attendance policies. 5. submit quality work in a timely fashion. 6. maintain at least an overall 3.0 GPA. 7. understand and abide by the East High IB Academic Honesty Policy, and manifest the highest degree of academic integrity. (Direct or indirect cheating will be grounds for immediate removal from the program.) 8. remain in the program at least one year unless released by recommendation of IB. Continuance in the IB program will be determined by student progress, attitude, and motivation. 9. upon exit from IB, seek approval from the principal of East to remain at East as a special transfer (transportation is not provided), otherwise, return to my base high school, or seek admission to one of the alternative schools. I understand that if I fail to meet the standards of the IB program, either because of the quality of my work or because of my failure to perform as a serious learner, I will be withdrawn from the IB program and advised to enroll in another course of study. If I choose to withdraw from and exit the IB Program, having a 3.0 GPA or greater, I understand that I will be expected to enroll at my base school at the semester interval. I also understand that students who take A.P. U.S. History but leave the IB program prior to graduation are responsible for taking a second year of U.S. History in order to meet USD 259 graduation requirements. Student Signature Date I hereby grant permission and consent for my son/daughter to enroll in the IB program at Wichita High School East and agree to all terms of this contract. I will not allow my child to miss school for family vacations or other recreational activities. I also agree to encourage and support my child's development and regular practice of independent study skills. Upon my child s acceptance of an offer to enroll in the East IB program, I agree to pay a deposit of $50.00 by April 3, The deposit will be credited toward IB exam registration fees to be finalized in October of the student s junior year. Enrolled students who fail to pay the deposit by April 3 will be withdrawn from IB and replaced by a student from the waiting list. Enrolled students who decide not to attend East IB will be refunded their deposit if they notify the IB Office in writing no later than May 1, 2018 that they will not be attending East High IB. I understand that I am responsible for payment of junior and senior year IB test fees. These fees will be approximately $900 payable during the junior and senior year. I also understand that I am responsible for payment of sophomore year A.P. U.S. History test fees in the amount of approximately $95. Special sources of funding are often available for families that cannot afford these test fees. No one is denied participation in IB because of finances. Parent Signature Date Keep For Your Records. While all of the following characteristics are important for success in the IB program, it is not expected that an applicant would have all of these attributes. Any student who possesses a majority of these characteristics will likely be successful in the IB program: desires to learn and enjoys learning is self-motivated and self-disciplined has excellent study habits and organizational skills, and manages time well is willing and cooperative in working with others will participate in class positively and willingly on a regular basis will seek help from teachers when necessary attends school regularly and makes up work promptly when absent is articulate and writes well has good critical thinking skills (can synthesize, reason, see relationships, draw conclusions, deduce, infer, etc.) will cheerfully provide service to the community is involved in extra-curricular activities has a universal attitude (Should have a broad range of interests: academic, aesthetic, and practical.) earns above-average grades
