2 2 Parkway Summer School Summer School Information The Parkway Summer School Program provides students with an opportunity to maintain skills learned during the previous school year and learn new ones. The district receives reimbursement from the state of Missouri for every day that students attend summer school. High-school students: Regular attendance is required for course credit. Students who miss MORE THAN two (2) course classes, regardless of whether excused/unexcused or due to suspension, will be dropped from the class and forfeit credit. Each day of a suspension is considered a day absent. Students cannot earn honors credit in summer school. No pass/fail or audit credit will be given. Summer school students are expected to follow all school, classroom and bus expectations, as well as the standards in Policy JK.BP, Student Discipline. Disciplinary consequences for violating these expectations and/ or Parkway s discipline policy may impact a student s opportunity to attend summer school and/or, as noted above, earn credit during summer school. Summer mmer School School Registration Registration Registration for Parkway families begins Thurs., April 7. High school students should register ONLINE this year at Elementary and middle school programs still require the paper registration and health forms contained in this course guide (pages 3 and 5). Please read the summer program information for the school the student will attend. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL REGISTRATION CLOSES AT EACH SCHOOL SITE WHEN ALL CLASSES FILL OR MAY 20 AT 4:00 P.M., WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. Parkway parents/guardians whose children do not attend Parkway schools during the regular school year will need to bring two proofs of their Parkway residency to registration. These documents should contain the parent s or guardian s name and address, and must be: A deed/sales contract of residence, current real estate tax receipt or contract to lease/rent, AND One other proof of residency, such as a current unpaid utility bill, credit card statement, employer s record of address, bank statement, or governmental acknowledgment of address (i.e., Social Security, welfare, voter registration, etc.). Registration materials may be mailed or delivered to the school site(s) listed in the program description. Entering kindergarten children must be five years old by August 1. A birth certificate is required. Fees Summer school classes are primarily supported by state aid based on student attendance. Textbooks and most materials are provided. Elementary and middleschool classes have a $25 supply fee per two-hour class. Include a check for fees with the registration materials. Make checks payable to Parkway School District. Refunds for classes must be requested in writing to the site administrator by Friday, May 27. Adventure Club & YMCA Child Care Programs Adventure Club Child Care Program Please refer to information on page xx in this program guide for details. Special E Special ducation Education and Related & Services/ESY Related Services/ESY Special education and related services are available from the Special School District (SSD) of St. Louis County for students whose IEP Teams have determined they qualify for Extended School Year (ESY) services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). Services, accommodations, and settings are ESY IEP decisions and may include transportation as a related service. Contact your child s IEP chairperson or SSD area coordinator for more information. Photocopies of the Registration Form and the Student Health Information Form are acceptable for registration. 6 6 6 Parkway Summer School Central Area Elementary Summer School Grades: Entering Kindergarten-5th Grade Site: Shenandoah Valley Elementay School (partnered with Green Trails and River Bend Elementary Schools) Site Administrator: Debbie Palazzola, (314) Program Description Summer is a super time to engage in fun activities that encourage creativity, team building with friends, enrichment, and academic growth. At Shenandoah Valley, you can sharpen your skills and experience the joy of learning through participation in three weeks of motivating classes. Teachers are planning a wide range of unique opportunities that you don t want to miss. own snack. Summer school registration closes when all classes fill or May 20 at 4 p.m., whichever comes first. Transportation Bus transportation is provided for Parkway residents (including students entering kindergarten classes) between Green Trails Elementary and River Bend Elementary to Shenandoah Valley Elementary. Students in the VST program will be transported as during regular school year. There is no bus service between periods 1 and 2. Parkway Adventure Club The Parkway Adventure Club will offer afterschool child care during the summer program at Shenandoah Elementary. See page 49 for details. Fees There is a $25 supply fee for each two-hour course for student materials, due upon registration. Checks should be made payable to Parkway School District. Jumpstart to Kindergarten and Camp First Grade classes are from 8:00 a.m.-12:05 p.m. The supply fee is $50. Schedule Classes will meet June 6-24, Monday-Friday. Classes meet as follows: Period 1: 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Period 2: 10:05 a.m.-12:05 p.m. Registration Registration for Parkway students begins on Thurs., April 7 (see page 2 for guidelines). Starting on the second day of registration, students will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis until a class fills. When signing-up for courses, please sign your child up for the grade he/she will be ENTERING in the fall. Lunch is not provided. Students should bring their Shenandoah Valley A Day at the Zoo Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 A Day at the Zoo will be a fun filled class that allows students to learn more about zoo animals. We will be integrating many subject areas as we study different animals through reading, writing and science. The students will be reading both fiction and nonfiction text to learn more about each animal. Each week we will be learning about different types of animals such as land animals, sea animals and farm animals. Students will be able to explore their creativity and research skills as we learn about the zoo together! Books into Movies Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 In this course, we ll explore three different books through interactive read alouds and partner reading (one book per week). We ll explore the characters and complete literacy activities! After completing each book, we ll watch the corresponding movie to compare and contrast the two. We ll read and watch: Charlotte s Web, Pippi Longstocking and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

You will design and build a new product to sell, determine what supplies you will need, and create a budget for your company. Finally, you will make commercials and advertisements to get others interested in your product. Caldecotts and Crafts Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 Do you love to read? Do you love looking at the illustrations in books? Do you like art? In this class we will read Caldecott-award winning books and create a craft project inspired by the book. Books include classics like Where the Wild Things Are and The Polar Express, as well as new favorites, such as The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend and This is Not My Hat. Camp First Grade Num: Grade 1 Periods: 1 & 2 $50 Come join in the campfire fun! Campers will be busy developing number sense through hands-on mathematical activities and games. They will build literacy skills while singing camp songs, reading camping and nature books, and journaling about their adventures. Campers will do arts and crafts, make snacks, play games and enjoy other fun camping activities. Classic Fairy Tales & Literature Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 Are you ready to enter a world of enchanted forests, princes and princesses, castles, dragons, and so much more? This summer we will dive into the reading genre of traditional literature. We will learn about fairy tales, tall tales, myths, legends, and different versions of them. Think about the classics such as The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and more! We will explore these stories through literature, movies, theater, arts and crafts, and music! We hope you join our adventures with traditional literature this summer! Clay Creations Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 2 $25 Delve into the three-dimentional art medium of clay! While learning about various cultures and historic periods, students will create works of art using the three basic hand building techniques: pinch, slab and coil. Come join the fun! Discover American Girls Num: Grades 2-5 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-5 Period: 2 $25 This class will focus on 12 time periods in American history. Students will discover what American girls from 1700 through today have done to help their communities, families and friends. They ll also learn about the impact American girls have made in our country s history while enjoying crafts and games from the past. Enrichment Math Games Galore! Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 Calling all math lovers! Put your math mind to the test! Turn learning into play. Be challenged with fun math games and activities that build strategies and exercise thinking. Come play games that keep your brain hopping! We ll conduct tournaments, play games with teams and partners, learn to build strategy and develop reasoning. Inventions and Inventors Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 2 $25 Do you love inventing things? Are you interested in learning about inventions and inventors? This exciting course will teach you the creative process of inventing as you research inventors and see how their inventions changed our lives. Come ready to invent, explore and expand your creative thinking. Jewelry Making Num: Grades 2-5 Period: 1 $25 Jewelry is art you can wear! In this class we will learn how to make lots of different kinds of jewelry. We will create different kinds of friendship bracelets, beads and beaded jewelry, and even wrapped jewelry. A jewelry box will be crafted to store our jewelry! Jumpstart to Kindergarten Num: Grade K Periods: 1 & 2 $50 Children will have the opportunity to become familiar with the kindergarten experience through activities that promote the development of literacy, math, art and music abilities, as well as social and fine-motor skills. Classroom and school routines will also be addressed in order to help students make a smooth transition to kindergarten. Teammates Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 2-3 Period: 2 $25 Teammates is an opportunity for students to build leadership skills through team sports and fitness activities. Students will participate in a variety of team building activities, play fun games, and further communication skills while also increasing their fitness awareness. Children will have opportunities to grow as leaders in an exciting and collaborative environment and make progress on their personal fitness goals. The EXTRAORDINARY World of Science! Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 4-5 Period: 2 $25 Students will explore the wacky side of science by participating in spellbinding activities and experiments! As mad scientists we will be making our own bouncy balls, creating lava lamps, and producing plenty of messy and innovative creations! 9 Parkway Summer School 9 Central Middle & West Middle Summer School Grades: 6th-8th Grade Site: Central Middle School Site Administrators: Carrie Lawton, (314) ; Allison Love, (314) Secretary: Cindy Christian, (314) Program Description Students will experience diverse learning opportunities designed to provide individual growth through new instruction, enrichment, and elective and challenge courses. The program allows students of all abilities, learning preferences, and interests to experience an ultimate summer of learning. Schedule Classes meet June 6-June 24, Monday-Friday. Classes will be available on the following schedule: Period 1: 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Period 2: 10:05 a.m.-12:05 p.m. Transportation Bus transportation is provided for Parkway residents from Central area and West area elementary schools to Central Middle School. Note: Because of summer construction at Henry Elementary School, the bus stop pick-up and drop-off location for students from the Henry school community attending summer school at Central Middle School will be the main entrance to West High School. Students in the VST program will be transported as during the regular school year. There is no transportation between Periods 1 and 2. Parkway Adventure Club Parkway Adventure Club will offer middle school after-care at Central Middle as a child-care resource. See page 49 for details. YMCA Traveling Teens Students in grades 6-8 who are enrolled in summer school can participate in the YMCA Traveling Teens. See page 51 for details. Algebra 1 Prep* Num: Grade 8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grade 8 Period: 2 $25 This course is designed for current 7th-grade students who will be taking Algebra in 8th grade next year. The focus of the course will be to strengthen skills, introduce concepts and use vocabulary needed for Algebra. We will also work on problem-solving skills. *This is not a remedial class. Students who are not recommended for Algebra should not enroll in the class as an avenue for a placement change. Art in 2-D Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Students will explore different ways of making art in two dimensions. Students will learn basic drawing, painting, collage, among other techniques, and will use a variety of media in the creation of unique art works. Each student can expect to learn a lot about art and bring home unique and beautiful projects. Beginning Tennis Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 This course will focus on fundamental skills: forehand and backhand ground strokes, volleys and serves. Students will practice skills through drills and games designed for performance and enjoyment. Scoring, terminology and etiquette will also be taught. Parkway Summer Programs 2016

10 10 10 Parkway Summer School Bridge to Math 7/8 Num: Grade 7 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grade 7 Period: 2 $25 This class will prepare students making the jump from Math 6 to the Math 7/8 class. We will cover topics that make up the foundation for success Math 7/8 and Algebra 1, including order of operations with integers, finding the percent of a number, proportional reasoning and solving one-step equations. Cooking Around the World Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Learn the cooking principles, kitchen safety and proper use of utensils while preparing foods from a variety of countries around the world. Create your own cookbook with recipes to wow your friends and family! Creative Crafts Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Using a variety of materials and creativity, we will create many mixed media projects tye-dye fabrics, journals, masks, stamps, frames and duct tape projects! CSI: Middle School Crime Scene Investigation Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Students will learn how the analysis of fingerprints, hair, fiber and blood plays a role in building evidence to solve a crime. They will use observation and critical thinking to make logical deductions about a crime scene. Proper microscope usage, paper chromotography, fingerprinting, accurate scale drawing and use of digital data collection devices will be taught. Groups of students will present their findings and rationale to the class. Engineering + Mathematics + Innovation + Technology (EMIT) = Fun Future Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 & 2 $50 This year, we ll explore the role technology played in Medieval times. Students will engage in engineering experiences through hands-on projects, including the construction of each student s mini-catapult, while exploring algebraic, geometric, graphing, and budgeting principles involved in engineering. Even if you have taken this course in the past, register again. New course theme! Everybody Has a Story Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Students will increase understanding of themselves and others by creating and sharing personal stories through written and visual media. The class will include exploring and discussing diversity Experienced Tennis Num: Grades 6-8 Period:1 $25 This course is designed for the player who has some experience or who has participated in the summer school tennis class in previous year(s). Proper scoring and etiquette will be reinforced, as well as singles and doubles strategy. Ground strokes, volleys and serves will be developed and practiced daily through drills and games. Overheads and lobs will also be introduced and practiced as students develop pace and placement of shots. Students will participate in tournaments during the last two weeks. Fashion Runway Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Bring out your creativity in a recycle-reuse project, as well as other one-of-a-kind assignments. With the help from the elements and principles of design, you will discover the inner fashionista in you! Greek Mythology Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Students will explore the exciting world of Greek mythology by studying major gods and goddesses, reading classic myths, researching and presenting lesser-known tales, and writing new stories. Through this process, students will also examine ancient Greek culture and identify its impact on modern-day life. Jesse James: The Greatest American Outlaw Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Explore the life of one of America s greatest outlaws, Jesse James! The man was a bank and train robber in the American Old West, best known as the leading member of the James-Younger gang of outlaws. We ll explore what life was like for James and his gang, crimes he committed and the end of his era. Saving the best for last, we ll reenact a trial of one of his most famous crimes! Minecraft Connections Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Minecraft is an interactive world that provides students the opportunity to create a world all their own! Students will explore connections between social aspects and Minecraft as they ask the question, What causes societies to rise and fall? Students will learn the power of collaboration and cooperation in this online learning experience.

The most employable sitters are those that have the knowledge and skills to keep kids safe, well cared for and entertained. Get the experience and expertise you need to start or refine your own babysitting business! Needle Me This! Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Learn to create a variety of needle arts projects for yourself or to give as gifts. Discover the joys of needlework, counted cross-stitch, and macramé. Crochet a fun, fabulous scarf to display your own unique style. Carry your finished projects home in a tote that you personalize with embroidery! Poet and You Know It! Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 This course will give students a chance to explore creative writing through the form of poetry. Throughout the class, students will read, analyze and write different types of poetry. They will collaborate with their peers in the writing workshop style to publish poetry that they will be proud of. So You Think You Can Dance Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of dance styles to include: modern dance, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballroom and a variety of cultural dances. Students also will study improvisation and basic choreography techniques. Spark!: Ignite Your Business Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 2 $25 Spark! Ignite Your Business is a competitive entrepreneurship class where students will move an idea from light bulb to launch. In small groups students will develop an innovative, creative, feasible business that is ready to launch by the last week of summer school. St. Louis Foods and Culture Num: Grades 6-8 Period: 1 $25 Students will explore our wonderful city through culture and food. We will have several cooking experiences and sample a variety of St. Louis favorites! If you want to try hometown cooking, become a St. Louis foodie! 12 12 12 Parkway Summer School Central & West High Summer School Grades: 9th-12th Grades Site: Central High School Site Administrator: Travis Fast (314) Program Description The summer school program at Central High School is designed to meet students needs by offering courses for credit recovery as well as enrichment. The summer program is designed to: 1) help students retain and improve basic skills by retaking classes they have failed, and; 2) provide enrichment courses for high school graduation credit. Schedule May 31-July 1, Monday-Friday Period 1: 7:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Period 2: 10:10 a.m.-12:40 p.m. Fees Students pay no tuition fee. Attendance and Grades Regular attendance is required for course credit. A third absence will result in loss of credit and the student will be dropped from the class. Chronic tardiness may also be recorded as an absence. Students receive a grade in every class. Students cannot earn honors credit in summer school. No pass/fails or audit credit will be given. Registration Summer school registration for Central/West students must be completed online at the following website: Registration will begin at 12:00 a.m. on April 7. If, at 11:59 p.m. on April 8, any class has received more registrations than spaces available, a random selection will be held for the spaces in the class. Students will be notified by April 20 if they were not selected for a class that required a random selection. Transportation Bus transportation is provided for Parkway students and residents from Central and West area elementary schools to Central High. Buses will return to the elementary sites at the end of the school day. Note: Because of summer construction at Henry Elementary School, the bus stop pick-up and drop-off location for students from the Henry school community attending summer school at Central High School will be the main entrance to West High School. Students in the VST program will be transported as during the regular school year. Students in the VST program will receive a notification card in the mail. Modern United States History Social Studies # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This course includes the study of domestic and foreign events which brought the U.S. to world power in the 1900s, the world wars and the changing role of the U.S. in the modern post-war era. Algebra 2 M a t h # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course stresses manipulation of algebraic expressions, solution of algebraic statements, and classification of algebraic relations and functions. Chemistry: Matter and Change Science # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit This course will include a study of physical and chemical changes, classification of matter, phase changes, atomic structure, the periodic table, laws of conservation of matter, and the history of chemistry. The course also addresses lab safety, the experimental process, graphing, and metric measurement. World History Social Studies # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit This course includes comparisons of past and present events as well as comparisons of western and nonwestern development so the students will have an understanding of the political, social, geographic and economic status of several nations in the world today. Government Social Studies # Grade Period 1 1/2 credit This course allows for a close examination of federal and state systems of organization. Students answer key questions concerning the U.S. s social, political and economic systems and their role as citizens. Both the Missouri and United States Constitution examinations and the course must be passed according to Missouri law in order for a student to receive a diploma. IMPORTANT NOTE: This course will be held at Northeast Middle School (location of the 2016 North High summer school program). West/Central students who enroll in this course should enroll in a second class in the North program, and will need to provide their own transportation. Ceramics Fine Arts # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit Instruction is offered in the materials, techniques, equipment, and vocabulary of ceramic art, including pottery and other forms. Hand-built and wheel-thrown forms may both be taught. The prerequisite for this course is Design Arts or Drawing. In the north area you can Blast into Summer Learning at Craig or Launch into Success at Ross. Teachers are busy planning a wide range of opportunities that include PE, drama, computer, science, math, writing, reading and much more. This is a chance you don t want to miss. So, sign-up to fill your summer days with fun, excitement and new learning! Fees and Supplies There is a $25 supply fee for each 2-hour course, which is due at the time of registration. Please make checks payable to Parkway School District. Kindergarten and ESOL students are to register for the same class from 8:00 a.m.-12:05 p.m. The supply fee is $50 for these classes. On the first day students should bring a supply box which includes the following: crayons, scissors, markers, glue and pencils. In addition, students should bring a snack to eat. The program will provide a variety of enrichment, elective, and intervention courses which will assist each student in achieving optimal individual growth. Classes offered are for students entering grades 6 through 8. Class sizes are limited. Early registration is encouraged. Courses offered are subject to sufficient enrollment requirements and may be cancelled through May 30. Schedule Classes meet June 6-June 24, Monday-Friday. The program provides courses that may be taken to earn credit for courses that were not successfully completed during the school year, and a variety of elective and enrichment courses which will assist each student in achieving optimal individual growth. Fees Students pay no tuition or supply fees. Transportation Bus transportation is provided for Parkway residents from North area elementary schools to Parkway Northeast Middle. If, at 11:59 p.m. on April 8, any class has received more registrations than spaces available, a random selection will be held for the spaces in the class. Students will be notified by April 20 if they were not selected for a class that requires a random selection. Students also write in response to the ideas and issues in the literature. The summer course will review parts of literature to 1900 (from the fall course) and review literature from 1900 to the present (from the spring course). Modern United States History Social Studies # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This continuation of a two-year study of American history, begun in the eighth grade, includes the study of domestic and foreign events which brought the United States to world power in the 1900s, the world wars and the changing role of the United States in the post-war era. World History: The Modern Era Social Studies # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This course traces the development of western civilization from its classical origins to the twentieth century by concentrating on specific periods, persons and events. This course includes comparisons of past and present events, as well as western and non-western development. United States Government Social Studies # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit The history, institutions, branches, functions, electoral processes, and citizens role associated with the governments of the local area, the state of Missouri, and the United States are presented in this course. The course includes an emphasis on the rights, and responsibilities of citizenship (e.g., community service), as well as a study of the principles and provisions of the Missouri and United States Constitutions. The Constitution examination(s) and the course must be passed according to Missouri law in order for a student to receive a graduation certificate. Algebra 1 M a t h # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit Algebra 1 in summer school is for remediation for the Algebraic Standards. The Standards that will be presented in this course are Writing Equations, Systems of Equations, Systems of Inequalities and Solving Quadratics. All students enrolled will be responsible for learning and assessing on these standards. At the conclusion of this course, students take the Algebra 1 End of Course Assessment required by the state of Missouri. Algebra 2 M a t h # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course reviews fundamental concepts and skills of high school Algebra and applies them to typical topics of second-year Algebra. The content stresses manipulation of algebraic expressions, solution of algebraic statements, and classification of algebraic relations. Geometry M a t h # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course covers the traditional content of high school Geometry and introduces the student to geometric proof. The emphasis of the course is on geometric relationship of figures, visualization of geometric properties and mensuration formulae. Matter and Change Science # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This semester of Chemistry will include a study of physical and chemical changes, classification of matter, phase changes, atomic structure, the periodic table, laws of conservation of matter, as well as the history of chemistry. The course also addresses scientific method, graphing and metric measurement. Biology 1: Cells and Variation Science # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit This course of life science looks at scientific methods, human anatomy and physiology, cells and their environment, some aspects of cell division, biochemistry and disease. Group interaction, discussion, and cooperation during laboratory practice and mathematical problemsolving sessions will be commonplace. Open-ended lab experiences requiring student collaboration and multiplestep problem-solving execution will be frequent. Creative Writing E n g l i s h # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit The goal of this course is to encourage and nurture the student s innate creativity. Students will study techniques used by professional writers and will be motivated with enticing writing activities designed to help them improve their skills while experiencing the pleasure of success. Writing may include a play, a short story, plus many poems and personal narratives. The exhibition of students work produced in this class will be in the school s creative writing magazine. Traffic Safety and Driver Education E l e c t ive # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course is designed to instruct an individual to drive according to the laws of the state of Missouri. Classroom instruction will emphasize overall traffic and driving problems, the psychology of the driver, traffic laws and preparation for the Missouri Driver s Examination, preventive maintenance, and fundamental safety and first aid instruction. Robotics Technology E l e c t ive # Grades 9-12 Period 1 1/2 credit The field of robotics requires a working knowledge of electronics, mechanics and software. It is usually accompanied by a large working knowledge of many subjects. Focusing on mobile robots and using a hands-on, collaborative approach, students will be introduced to the basic concepts/systems, terminology, and programming involved in robotics. College Prep Composition 1 E n glish # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This course is equivalent to and preparation for college Freshman Composition. This class will give students the opportunity to view films from a variety of historical periods and assess their historical accuracy against a wide range of other sources. Prep Algebra E l e c t ive # Grades 9-12 Period 2 1/2 credit This course is designed to introduce students to the basic algebraic properties, vocabulary, and concepts. It will prepare students for success in Algebra 1 during the coming year. Students who have failed a semester of Algebra should not take this course. 35 Parkway Summer School 35 Parkway South High Summer Academy (A Collaboration between Parkway School District and Maryville University) Grades: Entering Grades 9-12 Site: South High School Site Administrator: Michelle Thompson, (314) Program Description: The Coalition of Essential Schools (CES), established in 1984 as a partnership between Brown University and selected secondary schools throughout the country, is devoted to strengthening student learning by helping schools reshape their priorities. South High and Maryville University have collaborated to develop a program based upon some of the Coalition s principles: personalized teaching and learning; studentas-worker and teacher-as-coach; demonstration of mastery; less is more/depth over coverage. Teachers strive to create an intellectually rich environment, which emphasizes active involvement in the learning process. Students Students entering grades 9-12 in Fall 2016 may attend. Motivated learners who wish to explore a wide variety of topics are encouraged to apply. Fees Students pay no tuition or supply fees unless otherwise specified. Schedule This is a five-week program, May 31-July 1, Monday through Friday. The class times are: Block 1: 7:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Block 2: 10:10 a.m.-12:40 p.m. Registration High school summer school registration must be completed electronically through the following website: Registration begins at 12:00 a.m. on April 7. An effort will be made to place students in their first choices, but alternative choices may be assigned. Notification of the student s summer school schedule will be mailed in May. Applicants may wish to consult their home school counselor before registering. Transportation Bus transportation is provided for Parkway residents from south-area elementary schools to South High. Buses will return to the elementary sites at the end of the school day. Students in the VST program will be transported at the beginning and end of the school day as during the regular school year. VST students will receive transportation notification in the mail. Any student registered for only a block 1 class must have transportation off campus by 10:10 a.m. Any student registered for only a block 2 class must not arrive on campus before 10:00 a.m. No bus service is provided at 10:00 a.m to or from the summer academy. Attendance The Summer Academy is a five-week program. High school credit is earned only by being present and participating in class. A third absence in a class for any reason will result in loss of credit and automatic withdrawal from the class. Chronic tardiness may also be recorded as an absence. Credit Credit will be awarded and students will receive a grade for each class. In the Summer Academy, students cannot earn honors credit, pass/fail credit or audited credit. Reading comprehension and analytic skills are expanded through the study of the short story, the novel, poetry, and drama. One Shakespearean play is included along with modern and classical works. Writing skills move from strengthening the paragraph into careful building of a significant five-paragraph essay. Mechanics and usage, vocabulary, spelling, and oral communication are emphasized. Parkway Summer School World History Social Studies # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit Students will trace the development of world history from the Renaissance to the 21st century by concentrating on the specific periods, persons, and events of greatest significance to development. The course includes comparisons of past and present events as well as comparisons of western and non-western development in order that the students develop an understanding of the political, social, geographic and economic status of several nations in the world today. Algebra 1-Semester 1 M a t h # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit This course will include problem solving and the traditional topics of high school algebra. The course will emphasize the communication of understanding of algebraic processes. English 2 E n g l i s h # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit The study of literature, composition, and oral communication skills forms the basis of this course, which continues the work begun in English I. The skills of analysis and critical reading are developed through poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and drama. The major emphasis in composition is on techniques and organization patterns of exposition. Creative writing and formal essays are covered. Special attention is given to problems of usage and mechanics, which persist in students oral and written English. Improvement in vocabulary and independent reading is stressed. English 3 E n glish # Grade 12 Period 2 1/2 credit This course focuses on the variety of American themes and ideas presented in the novels, plays, essays, poetry and short stories of major American writers. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of literature and on the use of language, both oral and written, as a means of communication. The course further develops composition and rhetorical skills, research skills, critical thinking, vocabulary and study skills. Students move beyond working simply with concrete objects and begin analyzing the abstract world of mathematical objects. Geometric properties and concepts in both the plane and three-dimensional spaces are covered.

37 Biology 1: Cells & Variation Science # Grades Period 1 1/2 credit This is the initial course in a sequence of biology courses that together will provide a college-preparatory experience in the life sciences. This course has the theme: What is the basis of life and how does it vary? Students will conduct controlled experiments using the experimentaldesign process. They will study biochemistry, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and cell environment, aspects of cell division, Mendelian genetics, meiosis, and the unity and diversity of life. The topics will be presented through numerous laboratory activities, lectures, and discussions; and will emphasize process and thinking skills. Chemistry: Matter & Change S cience # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This semester course will include a study of physical and chemical changes, classification of matter, phase changes, atomic structure, the periodic table, laws of conservation of matter, and the history of chemistry. The course also addresses lab safety, the experimental process, graphing, and metric measurement. Group interaction, discussion, and cooperation during laboratory practice and mathematical problem-solving sessions will be commonplace. Forces and Motion in 1D S cience # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This semester course is the first in a recommended series of physics courses. This class will cover topics including laboratory safety, measurement, scientific inquiry, graphical analysis and the study of forces and motion in one dimension. Parkway Summer School 37 Parkway Summer Programs 2016 u The following courses are offered to any student wishing to earn elective credit (without having previously taken the course), as well as to those who have previously taken the course, but did not earn credit. Pottery Fine Arts # Grades 9-12 Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit Students taking Pottery will learn the materials, techniques, equipment and vocabulary of functional ceramic artwork. Hand-built and wheel-thrown forms may both be taught. Emphasis will be placed on skill development and craftsmanship using clay as a medium of expression. Japanese I Foreign Lang. # Grades 9-12 Period 1 and 2 1 credit Students will learn to perform communication tasks such as self-introduction, family introduction, what they did in the past or plan to do in the future, days of the week, numbers and weather. They will be given speaking as well as written assessment. Hiragana and katakana, two Japanese phonetic alphabets used for Japanese and borrowed words will be taught. Students also have the opportunity to explore various aspects of Japanese culture, including aspects of Japanese high schools. Satisfactory completion of the course will allow students to advance to Japanese II in the fall. Students must be enrolled in Japanese I for both 1st and 2nd block during summer school to receive the credit needed to move on to Japanese II. Foods and Culture in St. Louis C T E # Grades 9-12 Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course will explore past and current immigrant groups in St. Louis, as well as their cultures and foods. Students will research an immigrant group in depth and present what they have learned to the rest of the class. The study of culinary knowledge and skills will be used to enhance understanding of various cultures and their traditional foods. Health & Wellness Health # Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course is required for all students and is generally taken during the sophomore year. This comprehensive course includes the topics of personal wellness, nutrition, safety and first aid, disease prevention, human sexuality and healthy relationships, substance abuse and prevention, and community and environmental health. Strength and Conditioning P. E. # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit This course includes basic weight training techniques, as well as training practices and safety procedures in the weight room. Students will learn a variety of lifts and strength training principles for developing muscle and endurance. Only one required physical education ½ credit can be earned in summer school. Walking Fitness P. E Grades Period 1 or 2 1/2 credit This course incorporates creative-walking programs to improve student fitness levels and promote lifetime fitness. Various assessments will be used to develop students understanding in regards to the importance of their overall fitness, with an emphasis on cardiovascular fitness. Integrated Computer Literacy CTE # Grades 9-12 Period 1 1/2 credit The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to develop a strong foundation in computer and information literacy. This course is a broad introduction to the use of computers as tools for creativity, communications and organizing information. Students will learn about online tools, word processing and spreadsheet software, as well as publishing and presentation software. Students will learn how to use computers flexibly, creatively and purposefully. All learners will be able to recognize what they need to accomplish and determine how they can utilize their digital literacy skills and knowledge to best approach the task. Crimes, Criminals & Corrections Elective # Grades Period 2 1/2 credit The purpose of this course is for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the adult and juvenile justice systems. Areas of focus will be theory of crime, the criminal justice system, law enforcement, law adjudication, and penology. This one-semester course is based on the Missouri Personal Finance Competencies and presents essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about real-world financial issues. Keep your brain at the top of its game by enrolling in summer school! We have classes that will keep your skills sharp for your next grade, explore new learning, and stimulate imagination and creativity. Fees & Supplies There is a $25 supply fee for each two-hour course, which is due at the time of registration. Kindergarten students register 8:00 a.m.-12:05 p.m. The supply fee is $50. Checks should be made payable to the Parkway School District. On the first day, students should bring a supply box with the following items: crayons, scissors, markers, Elmer s glue, glue sticks and pencils. They also should bring a snack and a water bottle. Please notify the nurse and the teacher of any food allergies. Schedule Classes meet June 6-24, Monday through Friday. All kindergarten classes and some other classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. -12:05 p.m. They will provide students with various learning opportunities. Parkway Sports Camps 57 North Boys Soccer Entering Grades 9-12 June 6-July 20 North High M and W 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. $75 The Parkway North Boys High School Soccer Camp is changing its structure from a one week camp to an extended two-month camp that will be held twice a week from early June to mid-july. The idea behind this change in camp schedule is to train throughout the entire summer and allow student-athletes to develop fitness and soccer skills that will extend far beyond a one-week camp. Please bring both flats and cleats as we will be doing fitness training on the track throughout the camp. Players should come properly equipped with shin guards and appropriate shoes for both inside and outside. Water will be provided, but you should bring your own water bottle. Because this is an extended camp, we understand that students may have to miss a day or two of camp. Attendance is not mandatory for the entire summer, but please let us know if you will be missing any camp days.
