2 Welcome to Coppell High School Tonight we will discuss. Updates for the class of 2015 Academic Programs Helping Your Student Choose the Right Classes Registration Process Schedule Change Policy

3 Updates for the class of 2015 Beginning with the school year Coppell High School ranks only the top 10% of the class. The first time this ranking is available for the class of 2015 is at the conclusion of the fall semester of their sophomore year. Courses included in class rank are listed on pages 8-12 in the course planning guide. Beginning with the class of 2015 The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will replace the TAKS test.

4 Updates for the class of 2015 Required End of Course Assessments English I, English II, English III Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II Biology, Chemistry, Physics World Geography, World History, U.S. History Students in the class of 2015 must meet the end-ofcourse testing requirements, as well as pass their classes, in order to earn a diploma.

5 Academic Programs Dual Credit Options Students can participate in dual-credit programs through North Lake which include: 1. Junior & Senior Blocked Programs 2. Senior Scholars 3. Individual course offerings (Specific qualifications & guidelines apply to each program) What does this means for 9 th grade students? Cannot participate until completion of the 10 th grade year. Must be 16 years or older.

6 Academic Programs International Baccalaureate (IB) Program A rigorous two year program of distinction beginning in the 11 th grade school year. What does this mean for 9 th grade students? For further information contact Jeb Puryear, program coordinator at jpuryear@coppellisd.com

7 Academic Academies Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math This academy will focus on connections in the STEM fields. All courses done through the lens of engineering If you are interested in pursing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, this Academy might be for you!

8 Academic Academies Emerging Media and Communications This academy will focus on media, media production, and the field of journalism. All courses are taught through the lens of communications and media. If you are interesting in pursing a career in the area of media and communications, this Academy might be for you!

9 Academic Academies Public Services This Academy will focus on careers that fall under the health and human services umbrella. All courses are taught through the lens of health and human services. If you are interesting in pursing a career in teaching, social work, pre-med, dentistry, nursing, etc, this Academy might be for you!

10 Academic Programs Zero/8 th hour Courses Courses taken before or after the regular school day. Correspondence Courses Courses available through Texas Tech or E2020 Credit Recovery (fees apply)

11 Academic Programs Credit by Examination/CBE s Courses available through Texas Tech for: -Acceleration or -Recovery

13 Pathway to Graduation Graduation Plans Distinguished Achievement Program Recommended 4x4 All students are required to have 4 years of English, Math, Science, and Social Studies

14 Pathway to Graduation Credits Students need 26 credits to graduate regardless of degree plan DAP Recommended 9 th graders have the opportunity to earn 7 credits during the regular school day. To be classified a 10 th grader a student needs 6 credits ---one credit has to be English I and one credit has to be Algebra 1.

16 Implementing the 4x4 English Math Social Studies Science Course Selection Do you want to take a foreign language? Do you want to sign up for athletics/p.e.? Find an elective(s) that interest you.

28 Schedule Change Policy

29 Course Selection Verification 8 th grade students will receive a letter in early April listing courses selected for their 9 th grade year. Students will receive this letter during the school day at their middle school campus. Attached to this letter will be a form for requesting changes. Students should return the form ONLY if requesting a change to their middle school campus.

30 Schedule Changes After April schedule changes will be made for the following reasons: A student earned credit over the summer A student is scheduled in a class for which credit has already been earned. A student requested a tryout sport or class and their schedule needs to be adjusted.

31 Schedule Changes A schedule change is necessary due to changes in the master schedule. No elective changes will be made when a student is in a class he/she selected as a first or alternate choice. Level changes from Pre-AP to On-Level or G/T to On-Level classes will be made if space is available at the end of the third week of school, at the end of the 1st six weeks, and at the end of the 1st semester.
