3 LETS LOOK AT THE IB MISSION STATEMENT WHAT ARE THE KEY PHRASES? WHAT WOULD YOU HIGHLIGHT TO PARAPHRASE THIS INFORMATION? The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. HOW DO YOU DEMONSTRATE THESE KEY TERMS AT COASTAL? WHAT ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE IB PROGRAM? Global Learners- IB programmes increase understanding of languages and cultures, and explore globally significant ideas and issues (IBO.org). Foreign Language- All students have the opportunity to take two languages Community and Service- Each homeroom has just planned activities for their grade level to participate in Interdisciplinary- Lessons are planned to make connections in other classes and connections to the world Student Centered Learning- The IB program is a rigorous curriculum designed to develop lifelong learners and students prepared for their future How could you explain the program to an outsider? 3

7 IDENTITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS Who am I? Who are we? identity; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; what it means to be human. ORIENTATION IN SPACE AND TIME What is the meaning of when and where? personal histories; homes and journeys; turning points in humankind; discoveries; explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations, from personal, local and global perspectives. 7

8 PERSONAL AND CULTURAL EXPRESSION What is the nature and purpose of creative expression? the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. 11 IB SITE VISIT What is it? Teachers from other schools come to evaluate the job we are doing. They give us commendations (good job!) and recommendations (how to improve). Last year, we did student surveys to help see what you felt, and we have worked to improve some of those items. When is it? The second week in December What will happen? Members of the team will walk around the school and observe in classes, just like Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Jones do now. The team will also meet with students, teachers, principals, and even parents. They may talk to you in class or in the halls about Coastal. What might they ask you? What is the global context in one of your classes? How do you participate in community and service? What arts class are you taking? What is the best part of being at Coastal? Do you plan on going to IB at Johnson? Do your teachers use rubrics to give you feedback? 11
