Credit-Bearing Modules for International Students The ELTC offers modules in 3 areas of English language study to ERASMUS and Study Abroad students, in particular those with English as a major subject in their home institution. 1) English as a Foreign These general English modules focus on the 4 skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. The module is available at different levels (e.g. Upperintermediate, Advanced and Proficiency), so that you are taught and assessed at the right language level. Classes aim to improve language through a range of topics covering aspects of British society. 2) English and Culture These more focussed English language modules consider a specific area of English-speaking culture and the literary genres associated with it. skills and accuracy are facilitated through the close study of a range of texts (mainly British) in the areas of Literature, News Media or Film for example. The classes encourage discussion and reflection of the cultural and linguistic issues raised in the texts. 3) English for Academic Purposes These academic modules focus on the use of the English language in academic and professional situations. Areas such as 'Reading and Writing' and 'Speaking and Listening' are covered in two individual modules, so that the specific text types and associated language can be studied in sufficient depth. The modules will not only complement your current university study in the UK, but will also provide you with transferable professional language skills. Study Abroad Students The ELTC can support your learning experience in Sheffield by offering an English course within your Study Abroad Programme with several start dates throughout the year. This course allows you to improve your English skills and knowledge and offers you the chance to progress onto linguistically more demanding modules in the University www.sheffield.ac.uk/eltc/credit The English Teaching Centre The University of Sheffield 78 Hoyle Street Sheffield S3 7LG United Kingdom Tel. +44(0) 114 222 1780 Fax. +44(0) 114 222 1788 email : eltc.credit@sheffield.ac.uk
