EARTH Grade 5 Astronomy 1. Planets (3.1.7.B), (3.4.7.D) Compare planets characteristics, (e.g. diameter, distance from sun, and existing moons). Model elliptical orbits. (3.1.7.B) 2. Gravity (3.4.7.D) (3.4.7.D) Identify gravity as the force governing movement of the universe, solar system, moon and objects on Earth. Earth s Interior and Surface Earth s Waters Environmental Weather and Climate 3. Rotation and Revolution (3.4.7.D) Differentiate between rotation and revolution. Model rotation and revolution. 4. Moon (3.4.7.D) Discriminate between lunar and solar eclipses. Demonstrate how the same side of the moon is always visible from Earth. 5. Technology (3.4.7.D) Identify equipment and instruments that explore the universe, (e.g. satellites, rocketry). Explore contributions of past and present day scientists in the field of astronomy. Identify and articulate space program efforts to investigate possibilities of living in space and on other planets (e.g. NASA). Updated 6/6/08 Grade 5 Science Curriculum Page 2 of 5

LIFE Grade 5 Animals Cells and Heredity (3.3.7.B) Ecology Health and Biology (3.1.7.A) (3.1.7.B) Microorganisms and Plants Cells (3.3.7.B) Describe cells as the basic unit of living things. Identify levels of organization from cell to organism. Explain that cells and organisms have particular structures that underlie their functions. Describe and distinguish among cell cycles, reproductive cycles and life cycles. Explain disease effects on organisms. Systems (3.1.7.A), (3.1.7.B) Identify seven systems of the human body: CIRCULATORY, DIGESTIVE, ENDOCRINE, SKIN, EXCRETORY, REPRODUCTIVE, and RESPIRATORY. Identify the parts/organs of each system. Describe how the systems related parts work together in certain order to attain a desired result. Updated 6/6/08 Grade 5 Science Curriculum Page 3 of 5

PHYSICAL Grade 5 Chemistry (3.4.7.A) 1. Matter (3.4.7.A) Describe the common properties of matter. Differentiate between the states of matter. Differentiate between and provide examples of physical changes and chemical changes. Identify elements as the basic building blocks of matter that cannot be broken down chemically. 2. Measurement (3.4.7.A) Utilize the metric system to measure length, mass and temperature. Electricity and Magnetism Energy (heat, kinetic, nuclear, potential, and work) (3.4.7.B) Motion and Forces Waves (sound and light) 3. Reactions (3.4.7.A) Describe chemical reactants and products. 1. Energy Forms (3.4.7.B) Identify various forms of energy: THERMAL, KINETIC, NUCLEAR, POTENTIAL, and WORK. 2. Energy Conversion (3.4.7.B) Explain the conversion of one form of energy to another by applying knowledge of each form of energy. Updated 6/6/08 Grade 5 Science Curriculum Page 4 of 5
