1 UCS Stars In Record GCSE Results This morning, boys receiving their GCSE results at University College School in Hampstead celebrated achieving the highest number of top grades in the school s history. A wonderful 66% of grades awarded to UCS pupils this summer were A* (or 8/9). 73 boys were awarded straight A/A* grades (or 7, 8, 9 grades) and over 20% of the cohort achieved a clean sweep of A* (or 8 and 9) grades. Nine boys secured straight 9 and A* grades. 88% of the year group s grades were the equivalent of A*-A, and all credit goes to the hard-working boys, their supportive parents and dedicated teachers. Headmaster, Mark Beard, commented, Whilst the performances of pupils in STEM subjects was strong 56% of Maths grades were a 9 and 94% of Chemistry grades were graded A* or A for example the calibre of the grades in the Arts and Creative Subjects is worth championing. 56% of English Literature grades a subject studied by all pupils at GCSE were a 9 and 99% of pupils achieved at least a 7. 97% of pupils taking Design and Technology were awarded either an A* or an A and 95% of Art grades were a 9, 8 or 7 grade. These results are set against the national trend where, across the UK, the numbers of pupils studying creative subjects have dropped considerably since 2012 (The Independent, 2 nd August 2018) and there is a similar decline in pupils studying Modern Languages (The Guardian, 16 th August 2018). Today, 90% of UCS pupils secured either an A* or an A at GCSE in French, and in September the school will be expanding its provision for Modern Languages with a fifth subject, Italian, being added to the curriculum. The Times reported yesterday that the number of children studying Drama to GCSE level has dropped by 18% across the UK; at UCS, Drama is on a meteoric rise, and over 100 pupils will be studying this as a GCSE option in the forthcoming academic year. The pupils are now looking forward to starting life in the UCS co-educational Sixth Form. Term starts in eight days, but for now they will enjoy a well earned rest. In the new system, a 7 grade roughly equates to an A grade, an 8 to an A* and a 9 is considered to be a super A*. In 2019, all subjects will be examined and graded using the new 1-9 system.

4 Second Best Ever A-Level Results For UCS Pupils Today, Sixth Form pupils at UCS, Hampstead achieved the school's second best ever results at A Level and Pre-U, with 31% of exams graded at A* and 70% graded at A*-A. Impressively, 64 pupils achieved nothing below an A grade. Headmaster Mark Beard commented, Along with the rest of the nation, this year group were very aware that they would be the first to discover the consequences of all their subjects (except Maths) being examined at the end of linear, two year courses. They were at it from the very start and worked extremely hard to assimilate the content and thence how to apply it. Huge congratulations to them and their teachers are therefore in order. Particular congratulations should be given to the 14 pupils who achieved A* grades (or the Pre- U equivalent) in all of their subjects, and to the Medical School applicants who secured their places. Students are now looking forward to embarking on university courses. This year a larger number are heading to universities overseas including MIT, UPenn, Columbia (all USA) and McGill (Canada). UCS is proud of the recent increased provision for means-tested bursaries which makes education at UCS more accessible than ever before. Sixth Form pupils who had received bursaries were extremely successful, and next month will start courses, in Medicine, Mathematics and Chemistry, for example, at institutions such as Oxford University and Imperial College, London. Indeed, three of the pupils who received 100% bursaries collected seven A* and three A grades between them. If you would like to know more about bursary provision at UCS, please click here. We wish all our leavers the very best of luck for the future.
