Year 10 GCSE English Literature Recommended Books and Revision materials Dear Parent/Carer Your student is studying the GCSE texts set out below for their English Literature examination. Whilst we provide books for them to use in lessons, an increasing number of students find it helpful to have their own copies to annotate and use as revision aids. Obviously, students cannot write in school copies. Studied by all students: Copies Provided by school (No annotation/notes allowed) Copies Provided by school (No annotation/notes allowed) Provided by school for annotation by student Plus ONE of the following three texts chosen by your student s teacher: Copies Provided by school (No annotation/notes allowed) All texts are available as ebooks, (mostly free) and can be downloaded into ibooks on their ipad, and then annotated electronically. It is important to acknowledge however, that some students will prefer a printed paperback book to both read and make notes in. Some free resources are as follows: Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde: downloaded through the free ebook search app on the ipad. The text pictured above is ISBN: 978-1-85326-061-2 Romeo & Juliet: a free text is available in itunes books. The Romeo & Juliet text and notes pictured above is from Cambridge University Press ISBN: 9781107615403 and costs approx 7.25 An Inspector Calls: http://www.thehazeleyacademy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/an-inspector-calls- Full-Text.pdf Revision: There are also a number of revision guides available for each set text from CGP or York Notes please ensure the guide refers to the new grade 9-1 GCSE. Progress to date All Year 9 students have studied Jekyll and Hyde and sat end of year GCSE style examination, including closed book requirement. All Year 9 students have studied a selection of the GCSE poems. All Year 9 students have studied Macbeth to prepare them for the requirements of the Shakespeare paper. They have also had an introduction to Romeo and Juliet, their set text for GCSE. All KS3 students are familiar with the Big Write assessment, preparing them for the English Language writing requirement. All our English teachers are very familiar with the skills required and the texts offered for study, and have ensured that the first two cohors achieved very successful results.

Grading the New GCSEs in 2017 Levels 1-9

Home Support Support for completion of home learning and home based organisation. Consider purchasing student copy of set texts if they want to make notes directly on to the texts. (Information on editions we are using available tonight) Encourage students to read widely set texts, fiction and non-fiction texts. There is a greater emphasis on Nineteenth Century texts particularly in the English Language section. (Reading list available tonight) Continuity of attendance to lessons. Encouraging the development of own opinions through independent learning e.g. use of revision guides, websites (for example BBC), discussions about current events and how they link to ideas and themes in set texts.
