NEVADA STATE COLLEGE Nevada State College Degree Approval Form Note: Complete and submit for minor degree proposals, substantive degree proposals, new degrees, and degree program deletions. Degree proposals that involve the addition of courses that do not currently exist in the NSC catalog must be accompanied by completed Course Approval Forms. Refer to the Curriculum Review Guidelines for additional information. Degree Proposal Information Degree Program Name & Classification (Major/Minor) School/Department Catalog Year Effective Semester Effective Interdisciplinary Studies (Heath and Wellness Concentration) LAS/HUM 2015 Fall Thoroughly describe the degree proposal (note: a separate attached page may be necessary). For changes to degrees, in addition to describing the changes, be sure to list the old description title, the former number of credits required by the degree, and the new number of credits required by the degree. For deletions of an existing degree, no description is necessary. (However, proposers must provide a rationale for the deletion in section B.) This proposal seeks to update the Health and Wellness 24-Credit major concentration in the Interdisciplinary Studies (ISC) degree. The proposed changes remove classes that are not being offered (or have never been offered) and add classes that provide a more logical course sequence. The current 24 credit concentration is as follows: NURS 337- Pathophysiology or KIN 175- Physical Activity and Health NURS 493 - Biology of Aging or Psychology of Aging PSY 201 -Lifespan and Human Development PSY 4 70 - Health Psychology PSY 466 - Psychology of Sex or PSY 403 - Physiological Psychology PSY441- Abnormal Psychology or PSY 436- Drugs, Addiction, and Mental Disorders COU 320 -Drugs and Behavior or COU 322- Perspectives on Addictions NUTR 223- Principles of Nutrition This proposal seeks to change the degree sequence to: Health and Wellness Core: CHS 102- Foundations of Health and Wellness CHS 421- Health and Wellness Across the Lifespan (Prereq: CHEM 112) Psychology and Health PSY 403- Physiological Psychology (Prereq: PSY 101) Last modified 11/05/13 1
PSY 442- Psychology of Aging (Prereq: PSY 101) PSY 470- Health Psychology (Prereq: PSY 101) Topics in Health and Wellness COU 320- Drugs and Addiction (prereq: COU 300 or COU 315) NURS 337- Pathophysiology (prereq: BIOL 223, 224, 251) Choose 1: o PSY 244 - Psychology of Sports o SOC 466 - Sociology of Medicine o PSY 441- Abnormal Psychology (prereq: PSY 101) o PSY 420- Psychology of Learning (prereq: PSY 101 Catalog Description: Currently, there is not a catalog description of the Health and Wellness Concentration. This proposal would add the following: The BS in Interdisciplinary Studies with a Health & Wellness Concentration focuses on preventative health care, psychological wellbeing, and health education. Graduates of this program can go into a variety of health-related fields, including wellness coaching and personal training. Students interested in health promotion are encouraged to pair this concentration with a minor in promotion. The BA/BS in Interdisciplinary Studies' description reads: The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree provides an innovative alternative to traditional academic programs. Students in this program select two disciplinary concentrations (such as Visual Media and History or Education and Psychology), which combine to become the equivalent to a single major. The ability to study multiple disciplines allow students to tailor their degree to their own academic interest or career objectives. In the process of working through an individualized degree, students learn superior communication skills and gain experience in creative and critical thinking. To supplement the students' concentrations, the program features a series of core interdisciplinary courses that teach students how to synthesize the methodologies of multiple disciplines and develop unique solutions to complex contemporary problems. A. What type of degree proposal is being submitted? (Please check the appropriate box) Please see p. 6-8 of the Curriculum Review Guidelines for information on each type of proposal. For additional guidance, contact the chair of the Faculty Senate curriculum committee. D New Degree D Degree Program Deletion x Substantive Curricular Change D Minor Curricular Change If you selected "Degree Program Deletion," please skip sections C-H. B. Please provide a sound rationale for this proposal as well as an explanation of how it fits within the strategic plan/mission of the School and College. For new degrees or degree changes, explain how the degree will meet adequate enrollment numbers. For degree deletions, please provide a rationale for why the degree should be removed. (Note: a separate attached page may be necessary.) Each year, many students enroll at NSC as pre-nursing majors. Given the limited size of the program, not all of these students will be admitted. As a result, many students that are interested in health and wellness leave NSC to pursue other opportunities. The Health and Wellness 24-credit concentration in the ISC degree can retain some of these students by providing them with a means of completing a BS degree here at NSC. The concentration also helps students that have specific career interests, since the degree also requires a minor. For example, students interested in working for a health insurance company could combine the heath & wellness concentration with a business minor. As of the fall of 2014, 12 students have declared this major concentration. The current concentration has some notable problems, including: We have never offered KIN 175 - Physical Activity and Health We no longer offer NURS 493 - Biology of Aging We require "COU 320- Drugs and Behavior or COU 322- Perspectives on Addictions" but COU 320 is a prerequisite for COU 322. The sequence does not progress from basic to complex concepts. There are no introductory classes or capstone classes. After meeting with faculty members in Nursing and LAS, I am now proposing a revised sequence, which includes both an introductory class (CHS 1 02) and an advanced class (CHS 421) that specifically address the subject matter of the concentration. Majors will now begin with CHS 102 (Foundations of Health and Wellness), which will serve as an overview of the concentration. The "middle" classes are largely unchanged from the existing degree, although I have removed the classes we have never offered. The ISC 495 class (which all majors must take) can serve as a culminating experience. I conferred with the Department Chairs in Physical Sciences and Social Sciences to make sure all of the classes would be offered at least once a year. Last modified 11/05/13 3
