Why Read Write Inc. Phonics? Tried and tested over many years Systematic and structured Early success in reading

How does it work? Children: Learn 44 sounds and matching letters Learn to blend sounds to read words Read books which enable them to apply these sounds and practise the key words This is decoding

How does it work? Children: Talk a lot about what they have read to show that they understand Listen to and discuss other ideas to deepen understanding This is comprehending

Sounds All words are made up of sounds In English there are 44 different sounds! Let s have a look..

The complex English alphabetic code

Sounds Fred the frog helps children to learn to read Fred can only talk in sounds... e.g. he can only say c_a_t, he can t say cat - We call this Fred Talk Let s learn a sound now!!

Now let s look at the sound charts that are used in RWI lessons

How Fred helps with spelling.. Fred helps children learn to spell too! Children convert words into sounds They press the sounds on to their fingers... We call this Fred Fingers

Set 2 sounds As with Set 1 sounds, sound-phrase pictures are used to help children learn the sounds quickly e.g. for the sound ee, children learn the illustrated phrase What can you see? The aim is for children to be able to read the sounds effortlessly and to read the green words by sound-blending.

Set 3 sounds Before learning the set 3 sounds, children should be able to: Read all set 1 and 2 sounds instantly Use sound-blending (Fred Talk) to work out new words Be able to read many words they have encountered already without the need for sound-blending

Set 3 sounds As with Set 1 and 2 sounds, sound-phrase pictures are used to help the children learn the sounds quickly. Included in the set 3 sounds are the split digraphs e.g.

Progressing through Read, Write Inc Speed Sounds Set 1 + blending Set 2 Reviewing Sets 1 & 2. A favourite pink story

Handwriting at St. Mary s At St. Mary s we have adopted cursive handwriting for a number of reasons: It helps children s writing to be clear, fluent, legible and fast. Having a lead in and out stroke avoids confusion about where to begin letter formations. It is beneficial for children with poor hand control and for children with dyslexic traits.

Why cursive? The pen/pencil does not often need to be lifted from the page this reinforces phonic and spelling patterns. The aim is to teach our children cursive letter formation during their year in Reception so that they are confidently starting to use a neat, cursive style of handwriting by Year One.

Cursive Letter formation groups With cursive handwriting, the letters fall into the following groups:

Teaching cursive letter formation within RWInc An important part of the teaching of speed sounds is that children learn and rehearse how each letter is formed As each new letter sound is taught, children will practise the corresponding pre-cursive letter formation Children will learn which one of the 4 letter families each letter comes from and will have fun sorting letters into the family groups The great thing about cursive handwriting is that every letter starts from the same place and joining the letters helps the brain to remember the pattern.

What does being off Read, Write Inc mean? Children continue to revise sounds (dot, dash, count) Children learn how and when we apply prefixes and suffixes to root words Children learn homophones - words that sound the same but differ in meaning whether spelled the same way or not e.g. bear/bare to/too/two ate/eight

By... How can you help your child? using pure sounds knowing the graphemes understanding how Fred helps with reading and spelling

Also... By reading your child lots of lovely stories and asking lots of questions! Use these prompts to help you: What do you think happens next? What is that character thinking? What is happening? What is the character saying? What do you think that character is feeling now?

And... By talking to your child as much as possible and feeding them new and different words: Let s eat our lunch now. Let s munch our lunch now. Let s scoff our lunch now. Let s devour our lunch now! This pizza is nice. This pizza is tasty. This pizza is delicious!

Finally... By taking one of our booklets for tips and resources for supporting your child at home: http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ http://www.ruthmiskintraining.com/read-write-incprogrammes/index.html https://global.oup.com/education/content/primary/series/rwi/pa rents/ Early Years Blending www.letterjoin.co.uk (see handwriting letter for details of the home log-in details)

Last but not least.. Thank you for coming. Please take a booklet with you and. Happy reading!
