The MoU signing ceremony was held on the occasion of 3rd Vice Chancellors Forum of Universities of Islamic World, held in Islamabad on February 23-24, 2015. MoU was signed by Prof Dr Cemil Celik, Rector, INONU University and Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector, TUF. INONU University is a multidisciplinary university and has faculties of Health Sciences and Engineering of international repute. Both the Rectors welcomed the opportunity for the exchange of staff, scholars, students, academic information, and materials in the belief that the research and education process at both universities would be enhanced. Rector TUF well attended the 3rd Vice Chancellors Forum of Islamic World Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector TUF well attended the 3rd Vice Chancellors Forum of Universities of Islamic World, held in Islamabad on February 23-24, 2015. The mega event was jointly organized by COMSATS Institute of Information & Technology, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Pakistan, Higher Education Commission, Pakistan and Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW). The theme of the Forum was Universities in the Islamic World: Facing Global Challenges. Vice Chancellors, Presidents and Rectors from 55 Islamic Countries attend the event. Mr Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister of Planning and Development and Prof Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, Chairman HEC also addressed on the occasion. The Forum aimed at pooling resources including but not limited to offering scholarships for higher studies. It helped in establishing Virtual Centers of Excellence across the Islamic World. It provided a platform to the university leaders to formulate an agenda to cope with the rapidly changing environment and needs of global economy. It served as an inspiration for the participants to draw plans, programs and set targets for their respective institutions. It helped in establishing linkages and promote networking among the participating universities/ institutions. Dr Seemal Mumtaz, a cardiothoracic Surgeon at University of California, USA was the guest speaker. state of affairs & the future of women in medicine from a global perspective. She also discussed the challenges faced by women in medical profession. Her talk was witty and very informative. She helped kindle a renewed enthusiasm in students for their medical profession. The audience thoroughly enjoyed her lecture. The talk was later followed by Question & Answer session by students & faculty members. Seminar on The Heart Team Approach to Valvular Heart Disease: AHA Guidelines at MTH As a CME activity Medical Education department organized a comprehensive lecture by Dr Seemal Mumtaz, an eminent cardiothoracic Surgeon at University of California, USA on 20th January at Madinah Teaching Hospital. Dr Seemal has more than 8 years of experience of working in United States of America. She also has more than 15 publications to her credit. The Guest speaker delivered a lecture on The Heart Team Approach to Valvular Heart Disease: AHA Guidelines in the evening session. Prof Dr Hafeez Ch., a renowned cardiologist was the chief guest of the occasion. The talk was attended by Principal UMDC Prof Dr A G Rehan, Vice Principal Dental section Dr Imran Farhat, Head of departments & faculty members of UMDC & MTH. Guest speaker s lecture provided invaluable insight into current practices. She enlightened the audience about the American Heart Association guidelines, 2014 regarding Valvular Heart Disease. Talking on this occasion Prof Dr Hafeez Ch appreciated Dr Seemal s lecture & thanked her for presenting the material on the new innovations in a way that everyone could understand. CME Activity on Over Population and Maternal Mortality A seminar on Over Population and Maternal Mortality jointly organized by UNFPA, Ministry of Population Welfare Government of Punjab and The University of Faisalabad at University Medical & Dental College on February 21, 2015. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, Assoc Professor Dr Zahid Masood, HoD Community Health Sciences UMDC told that every 4 seconds a person dies due to hunger and out of this 75% are children. Pakistan was progressing towards phase of demographic trap in which population out number resources leading to food crisis, crime, illiteracy and unemployment. Further, number of dependents was on increases. In Pakistan 8 people were dependent on one person in terms of economics. Every day in 2008, about 1000 women died due to complications of pregnancy and child birth, including severe bleeding after childbirth, infections, and hypertensive disorders. In Pakistan death of mothers during childbirth was still very high and we have failed to reach the MDG 5 which ends in 2015. He further told that, in Pakistan nearly 80% (rural 89%, town and cities 64%) deliveries take place at home. Large majority of home deliveries are conducted by dais (traditional birth attendants). Our birthing culture needs to be changed as it is a combination of dais, lack of awareness among families due to illiteracy and lack of emergency obstetric and neonatal care. declined the maternal mortality ratio by 40% in just ten years. Dr Farkhanda, District Population Welfare officer Faisalabad, spoke about the efforts made by the government to address the issue. Professor Dr Mubashara Naz, Head of Gynecology Unit 2 at MTH said that excessive bleeding was major cause of death of during pregnancy in Pakistan. She further added that 10 to 15 pints of fresh blood were needed in each case. He urged the community to promote culture of blood donation. Chief Guest Professor Dr Muhammad Saeed Dean Faculty of Medicine called the facts as eye opener and urged the doctors to reach the masses who cannot afford health facilities die to poverty. He urged that there should be a balance between population and resources. Female education should be encouraged, he added. Dr Sumera, Dr Lateef and Dr Neelam also spoke on the occasion. Certificate distribution ceremony of CTL Workshop Certificate distribution ceremony of CTL (Certificate in Teaching & Learning) course held on 6th January 2015. 12 faculty members including senior professors & heads of departments from Medical, Dental & Allied Health professions, successfully completed this 3 months course. This course was organized by Department of Medical Education (DME), UMDC from the platform of The University of Faisalabad. Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal Tahir, Advisor to Chairman BOG was the chief guest. The participants thanked DME for organizing this highly valuable course. Dr Iqbal appreciated the efforts of Dr Tanzeela Khalid & her team in DME for faculty development & quality of education. Workshop on Outcome Based Education and Assessment System of Accreditation Pakistan Engineering Council organized workshop on Outcome Based Education and Assessment System of Accreditation at UET Lahore in collaboration with Quality Assurance Agency, Higher Education Commission Islamabad. Prof Dr Kai Sang LOCK from the Institution of Engineers, Singapore was the Resource Person for the workshop. Mr Hamid Farooq, Deputy Director QEC, TUF and Mr Sharjeel Waqas, Lecturer Chemical Engineering, TUF attended this important workshop. QEC has nominated Mr Hamid Farooq and Mr Sharjeel Waqas as Master Trainer on Outcome Based Education and Assessment System of Accreditation and QEC plans to conduct a series of workshops on the said topic. The University of Faisalabad arranged a series of three presentations on Higher Education Commission (HEC) Digital Library at Saleem Campus, Amin Camus and Madinah Teaching Hospital. The presentations at MTH and Saleem Campus focused on resources in Medical Sciences whereas presentation at Amin Campus highlighted the resources in Engineering, Computer and Management Sciences. Mr Muhammad Umar Farooq, Chief Librarian, TUF gave comprehensive lectures on the topic. New Books in Noor-e-Siddiq-e-Akbar Library Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, inaugurated the new collection of books on Medical Sciences in Noor-e- Siddiq-e-Akbar Library, TUF on 10th February 2015. Faculty members Prof Dr Saadia Hameed, Prof Dr Haji Muhammad Aslam, Prof Dr Said ud Din and Dr Zahid Masood joined the library staff on the his occasion. The new collection consists of large number of books on Anatomy, Anesthesia, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Gynecology, Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Physiology, Radiology, and Surgery. These books will add the value to available collection in library and will facilitate the teaching, learning, and research by the faculty, students and researchers of TUF. Department of Dermatology, University Medical and Dental College, organizes World Leprosy Day each year. This year it was observed on 26th Jan, 2015. Prof Dr A G Rehan, Principal UMDC was the chief guest and Dr Chris Schmotzer was the guest speaker on the occasion. Dr Chris Schmotzer is a German lady, well known for her contributions towards leprosy control in Pakistan. She is the Medical Director of Aid to Leprosy Patients since 1995, including the Prevention of Blindness Program and the Tuberculosis Control Program. She is also Superintendent of Rawalpindi Leprosy Hospital since 1993. In addition to these responsibilities she is also the Focal Person on Leprosy in Pakistan for the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1999 and a Member of the Technical Advisory Group on Leprosy for WHO since 2009. The topic of her lecture was Leprosy an endemic disease in Pakistan. She urged the medical professionals to have a high index of suspicion if they come across a patient with hypo pigmented skin lesions, as new cases of leprosy are still being diagnosed in Pakistan.She highlighted the Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed with other faculty members and Library staff UMDC Observes World Leprosy day importance of early detection and proper management of leprosy along with prevention of disabilities. Faculty members and undergraduate students actively participated in the session. Dr Chris also conducted a workshop on Neurological examination of a Leprosy patient in the Department of Dermatology, Madinah Teaching hospital. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine & Allied Health Sciences, doctors from Dermatology, Pediatrics and Emergency Care attended this program. Dr Chris Schmotzer, Prof Dr A G Rehan and Dr Tanzeela Khalid speaking to the audience World Cancer Day World Cancer Day, a truly global event taking place every year on 4th February. This day is being observed in UMDC, either in the form of poster and model competitions among the students of MBBS and BDS, or the informative lectures delivered by the guest speakers from the renowned institutions. presentations by the two guest speakers from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center (SKMCH and RC). The first presentation was based on the topic of Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and was delivered by Dr Sajid Mushtaq (FCPS Histopathology & FRCPath UK), Head of the department and consultant Pathologist at SKMCH. He mentioned the role of IHC in diagnosis, prognosis and prediction in Surgical Pathology. He emphasized the role of Immunohistochemistry in the interest of patients as it prevents the unwanted catastrophic side effects of chemotherapy and radiations to those who may have been misdiagnosed. The second lecture was delivered on Molecular Pathology and Targeted Therapies by Dr Asif Loya, Associate Medical director and consultant Pathologist ( SKMCH and RC). Dr Asif Loya provided the knowledge of mutations involving various genes like BRAF, N-MYC, JAK-2 and targeted therapies involved in various carcinomas, lymphomas and leukemias. The presentations were followed by question and answer session between the participitants and the speakers. Event was concluded with the inspirational vote of thanks delivered by Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dr Asif Loya, Dr Sajid Mushtaq, Dr Sadia Hameed and others addressing the audience TUF Observes Kashmir Solidarity Day The University of Faisalabad organized a program to mark Kashmir Solidarity Day in Saleem Campus on 4th February. Prof Dr Muhammad Saeed, Dean Faculty of Medicine & Allied Health Sciences was the chief guest of the event. Students from different Schools of TUF delivered speeches and presented a tableau to express their feelings in favour of self-determination rights of the Kashmiris. Dr Muhammad Saeed expressing his views stressed the need for peaceful solution of Kashmir dispute according to the resolutions of the United Nations. A prayer was also offered for the stability of Pakistan and freedom of occupied Kashmir. Students presenting a skit on Kashmir Solidarity Day. Mehfil-e-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) In the Holy month of Rabi ul Awwal, a Mehfil-e-Miladun-Nabi (SAW) was held for females at The University of Faisalabad on February 4, 2015. Students from The University of Faisalabad, University College for Women and University Cambridge School participated in the Mehfil. After recitation of the Holy Quran, students offered Naat-e-Rasool Maqbool (SAW), Darood-o-Salam, Qaseeda Burda Sharif and Qaseeda Ghausia. Principals and teachers from different female colleges and mothers of the students also attended the event. An Umrah ticket was also offered to one of the audience through lucky draw. The program concluded with Drood o Salam and prayer. Naatia Mushaera at Amin Campus School of Arabic and Islamic Sciences, TUF organized a Naatia Mushaera in Amin Campus on 21st January 2015.. The event was presided by Prof Dr Abdul Majeed, Rector, TUF. Eminent poets of the city recited Naatia Kalam. Mehfil concluded with Drood o Salam and Dua. In connection with series of lectures under Sham-e- Madinah The University of Faisalabad organized its Second talk in Amin Campus on 7th January, 2015. The topic was Seerat-un-Nabi (SAW). Dr Tahir Raza Bukhari, former Director General Auqaf, Punjab was the guest speaker. He gave a comprehensive talk on the topic.
