HEAD COACH BRIAN BEDARD 20TH SEASON AT COLORADO STATE 2008 MWC WOMEN S OUTDOOR COACH OF THE YEAR Coach Brian Bedard is entering his third year as the Rams head coach, and his 20th season as a track coach for Colorado State University. During his coaching tenure, Colorado State track and field athletes have won many great honors, including the history-making women s victory at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships, the first-ever outdoor title in school history. It was a special year for our coaching staff, and a historic year for our program, Bedard says. The women s cross country team got us off to a great start with a first-ever MWC title and NCAA regional title. Their effort carried over to the track side, motivating our women s team in the indoor and outdoor seasons. It was a season that I will never forget as a coach. The 2008 women s team was very special to me, consisting of several seniors who had grown up in our program and who believed in what we are trying to achieve at Colorado State. Bedard earned the recognition of Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year for women s outdoor track as a result of the team s victory. Coach Bedard has been on the Rams coaching staff since the fall of 1988 when he began his career as the throwing events coach. He was honored as the Mountain Region and NCAA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005. He has coached two Olympians, two national champions, 32 All-America performances, and 49 conference champions. All of Colorado State s school records in the throwing events have been set during Bedard s tenure. In 2005, Bedard was inducted into the Colorado State University Hall of Honor for his accomplishments as a coach. Bedard accepts MWC Coach of the Year award One of Coach Bedard s most successful athletes is Casey Malone, a discus thrower he originally recruited from Colorado s Arvada West High School. Bedard and Malone have worked together for over 12 years and in 2008 Casey placed third at the United States Olympic Trials, securing a spot on the United States Olympic Team that competed in Beijing. During the 2006 season, Malone was the USA Championship runner-up in the discus. Malone also made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2004 and placed sixth in the discus competition at the Athens Olympics. In 1996, when Malone was a freshman at Colorado State, Bedard coached him to a junior national title and a junior world championship gold medal. In all during his collegiate career, Malone garnered four All- America certificates and an NCAA title in the discus. He currently owns the Colorado State University school record in the discus at 211 ft. 6 in. Another of Bedard s standout throwers is Loree Smith, the 2005 NCAA national champion hammer thrower, who was also the runner-up in the indoor weight throw and a five-time All-American. Smith set the American collegiate record in the indoor weight throw with a mark of 74 ft. 3 in. during the 2005 indoor season. She also set an NCAA collegiate record in the hammer throw at the MWC championships with a throw of 229 ft. 9 in. (70.02 m). Smith earned a spot on the United States Olympic Team in 2008 and competed in the hammer throw in the Beijing Olympics. Many other athletes have enjoyed tremendous success under Coach Bedard s guidance. He coached Shelly Greathouse- Borrman, a Fort Collins native, five-time All- American and 1999 NCAA discus runner-up, who still owns the Colorado State school record and Western Athletic Conference record in the discus with a throw of 198 ft. 8 in. Another discus thrower, Liz Toman, placed second in the 2001 NCAA national championships. Drew Loftin was Coach Bedard at a Glance... the 2003 NCAA indoor runner-up in the weight throw and outdoor runner-up in the hammer. Loftin threw 71 ft. 1.5 in. in the weight throw and 232 ft. in the hammer while competing for the Rams. Bedard s most recent All-American thrower is Jason Schutz, Led women to first-ever outdoor conference championship in 2008 Earned 2008 MWC women s Coach of the Year Has coached two Olympians, two national champions, 32 All-Americans and 49 conference champions Inducted into CSU Hall of Honor in 2005 who placed sixth in the discus at the 2008 NCAA championships and 16th at the Olympic Trials. Coach Bedard s expertise extends beyond throwing events. For three seasons he coached the long jump and triple jump events and was also the heptathlon/ decathlon coordinator for 10 seasons. He coached Toman to a school record, conference championship and NCAA qualifying mark in the high jump. In multi events, Bedard coached Doug Crumb and Matt Smoldt to conference titles in the decathlon, and Lindsey Malone to a school-record point total of 5,160 in the heptathlon. Coach Bedard has shared his coaching expertise as a featured speaker at numerous conferences and clinics across the country. He has also developed a nationally renowned instructional video on discus throwing technique, which is available through Championship Books and Videos. Before he began his coaching career, Bedard was a student-athlete in track and field at Colorado State University from 1983-88. He finished as the Western Athletic Conference runnerup in the discus and placed eighth in the shot put. Bedard is married to the former Jill Johnson, a volleyball standout for Colorado State from 1987-90. They have two daughters, 12-year-old Kelcey and 10-year-old Baylee. 14 Colorado State TRACK & FIELD 2008-09 TIM CAWLEY SIXTH SEASON AT COLORADO STATE ASSISTANT COACH - MULTIS, JUMPS, POLE VAULT Tim Cawley begins his sixth season at Colorado State, where he is the coach for the multi events as well as the jumps and pole vault. Cawley has seen his student-athletes break numerous school records in a variety of events, ranging from the 60-meter dash to the heptathlon. While at CSU, Cawley has coached eight NCAA All-Americans, 16 conference champions and 18 NCAA championship qualifiers. Last year under Cawley, Janay DeLoach finished her career as a four-time All-American for the Rams, three of those in the long jump and one in the 100 meters. Emily Pearson and Katie Lloyd became the first All-Americans in the heptathlon in Colorado State history, with Pearson setting the school points record in the process. Also qualifying for the NCAA championships were Drew Morano in the 400 meters, Kevin Johnson in the decathlon, and Niomi Ridge in the high jump. Morano and Ridge set school records in their respective events. Cawley coached sprinter John Woods as well. In 2004, Woods became the first All-American in the sprints for Colorado State since 1954, earning the honor in both the 60 meters at the indoor NCAA championships and the 200 meters at the outdoor championships. Cawley joined the Rams from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he was an assistant coach. During his stint with the Panthers, he oversaw sprints, hurdles, jumps, pole vault, javelin, and hammer, and assisted in the day-to-day operations of the program. In his two seasons, 21 school records were broken and he coached 43 conference champions. Prior to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cawley spent two years as the jumps coordinator and assistant coach at West Virginia, where he coached one All-American, two NCAA qualifiers and two conference champions. He also received his master s degree in athletic coaching education. Cawley earned his undergraduate degree in art education from Wyoming, where he competed in the jumps and was on the 4x100 meter relay team. He earned All-America honors in 1998 in the long jump, competed at the NCAA championships in the triple jump, and finished in the top 10 in the triple jump at the 2008 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. JOHN CARTER 10TH SEASON AT COLORADO STATE ASSISTANT COACH - SPRINTS, HURDLES, RELAYS John Carter enters his 10th year with the Rams and his 13th year coaching overall. He is the sprints, hurdles and relays coach. Carter has worked with 66 allconference selections and four All-Americans, and has seen his athletes break seven school records. Carter also serves as the founder and co-camp director for the High Altitude Distance Camp held in Pingree Park, Colo. The hurdles and sprints group has seen unprecedented success over the last few years at Colorado State University. Numerous All-America awards, all-conference selections and school records have been recorded since 1999. The sprints group has performed very well at the conference and national level. The lists of athletes from this era are all at the top of Colorado State University s all-time best performances. Last season, several school records were broken in the sprints and relays. The 2008 newcomers helped CSU achieve a conference title for the women and several school records. Freshman hurdler Nigel Joseph finished second at the Canadian Olympic Trials in the 400-meter hurdles. In the 2008 conference 100-meter hurdle finals, CSU had four women on the line. All four of these women ran under 14.10 for the season. This year, with the addition of several highly recruited talents, the CSU sprint corps looks to have another season full of broken records. From 2003-07, Carter specialized in the hurdle events area. The hurdle squad holds 43 spots on Colorado State s track top 20 lists, including Justin Hazzard s school record in the 60-meter hurdles. Hazzard and Mike Horton hold the top two spots on the indoor list and are in the top three on the outdoor lists. In the past four years, the hurdle squad received 12 all-conference awards. The school record in the shuttle hurdle relay has been broken twice in the last few years, with the team finishing second at the prestigious Drake Relays in 2006. From 2000-03, Carter worked with the horizontal jumpers. During that time the men s and women s triple jump records were set by Jacob Benson and Amanda Huddleston. Benson s 51-foot, 23.4-inch triple jump was an NCAA provisional qualifier. There were eight all-conference award winners during Carter s tenure as jumps coach. From 1999-2007, Carter worked with the cross country teams helping produce five men s NCAA team appearances, five women s NCAA team appearances, four All-America awards, 16 all-conference performances, two Freshman of the Year awards and a conference champion in the Mountain West. Carter also assisted coaching the middle-distance and long-distance events. In the steeplechase, he assisted in coaching both men and women, adding to the school s top 20 list. Carter worked directly with Rob Watson, Mike Nicks and Reagan Robb, three of the top four steeplers in school history, as well as Meg Larson, the school-record holder in the steeplechase. Carter also spent time serving on various USTAFCC track and cross country committees. In 2005 he was the women s at-large voter, and in 2007 he was the men s Mountain Region representative. In the same year he sat on the cross country executive committee. Before coaching at Colorado State, Carter was an assistant coach at Loveland High School in Loveland, Colo. Originally from Loveland, Carter ran cross country and track for Loveland High School before continuing on to compete in the middle distances and cross country at Murray State University in Murray, Ky. He earned his bachelor s degree in history with a minor in political science from Murray State in 1995. Carter continued his education at Colorado State, where he earned a master s degree in education in 2001. Carter is married to the former Amy Machowski, a Colorado State University graduate. They have a 6-year-old daughter, McKenna, and a 3 year-old son, Kelton.

BRYAN BERRYHILL THIRD SEASON AT COLORADO STATE HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH, ASSISTANT TRACK COACH - DISTANCE Bryan Berryhill is in his third year as the head cross country and assistant track coach at his alma mater, where he was a 10-time All- American and two-time national champion during his running career for the Rams. Berryhill is one of the most recognized names in Colorado State track and field history, winning the NCAA indoor mile title in 2001 and then winning the outdoor 1,500-meter title three months later. Berryhill guided the women s cross country team to CSU s first-ever Mountain West Conference and regional team championships during the 2007 season. In winning the Mountain West title, the Rams ended BYU s 19-year reign as conference champions. By virtue of the team s success, Berryhill earned Mountain West Conference and Regional Coach of the Year honors. Other accomplishments by the Rams under Berryhill s guidance have included: April Thomas winning the first individual women s cross-country title in school history, both Allison Gohl and Jake Keyser earning MWC cross country Freshman of the Year honors, the women s cross country team finishing 24th in 2006 and 15th in 2007 at the NCAA championships, and guiding Rob Watson (3,000 steeplechase) and Nicole Feest (10K) to school records in 2007. Watson was also the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional champion in the steeplechase. Both Watson and Feest went on to compete in the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Berryhill is married to the former Toni Zander, also a member of the CSU track and field family. The couple has two children, 5-year old Libby and 3-year old Eli. ELIZABETH MOORE SECOND SEASON AT COLORADO STATE ASSISTANT COACH - MID-DISTANCE, DISTANCE Elizabeth Moore enters her second year as assistant coach for the Rams. She assists with the middle-distance and distance athletes during the track and field season while serving as an assistant for the cross country program in the fall. Moore received her undergraduate degree in health and exercise science with a minor in coaching at Colorado State while running for the Rams. During her time as a student-athlete Moore was a four-time NCAA qualifier in cross country, a member of the Mountain West Conference champion indoor distance medley relay team in 2000, a member of the 2002 NCAA indoor distance medley relay squad, and earned all-conference and all-region cross country and track honors from 1997-2002. She garnered several WAC and MWC Athlete of the Week honors throughout her career. Moore was an assistant cross country and track coach at Rocky Mountain High School for three seasons, when the girl s track team was the state runner-up and the cross country team was a top contender at the state meet. I am very excited to be part of a program that has incredible potential to be consistently nationally ranked, Moore commented upon her hiring. It is such a blessing to have been able to compete for CSU and I feel so fortunate to be able to play a different role now as a coach in a program that I hold dear to my heart. It is an honor to be part of such an amazing coaching staff. I look forward to learning from some of the best coaches, motivators, teachers and role models in the nation, as well as contributing some of my own knowledge and experiences to the team. Formerly Elizabeth Roodell, she is married to Brent Moore, a P.E. teacher at Putnam Elementary and head swim coach at Poudre High School in Fort Collins. Colorado State TRACK & FIELD 2008-09 15

JASON SCHUTZ FIRST SEASON AT COLORADO STATE ASSISTANT COACH - THROWS, STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Jason Schutz concluded his athletic career by winning his third All-America award at the 2008 NCAA outdoor championships. With his sixth-place finish in the discus throw, Schutz became just the fifth athlete in CSU history to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons in the discus throw. He also received the award at the 2008 indoor national championships in the weight throw. Schutz was also the recipient of the 2008 Nye Trophy as the outstanding male athlete at CSU and was named all-mountain West Conference on five occasions. The Chromo, Colo., native will be able to draw on his experiences as a former walk-on to the track team as an example of the hard work and determination that goes into being a successful student-athlete when he works with Brian Bedard and the throws athletes on this year s team. Schutz graduated from CSU with a degree in natural resources management in 2008. JANAY DeLOACH FIRST SEASON AT COLORADO STATE VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH - JUMPS Janay is one of the most decorated female track athletes in CSU history. In 2008 she became only the third female athlete in school history to earn multiple All-America honors in the same season as she earned the award in both the outdoor long jump and 100 meters. In addition to these two, she earned the award in the 2007 indoor and outdoor long jump, bringing her career total to four All-America honors. She also holds the top two long jumps in CSU history, as she broke her own school record with a jump of 21 feet, 3¼ inches in 2008. The Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., native joins the track coaching staff after an amazing athletic career. On top of her four All-America certificates, she is a two-time winner of the Virginia K. Frank Award as the most outstanding female athlete at CSU. She also won four Mountain West Conference long jump titles and was named all-conference on four occasions. She will continue to bring her determination and success to the current track and field team, where she will work closely with Tim Cawley. DeLoach graduated in 2008 with a degree in psychology. 16 Colorado State TRACK & FIELD 2008-09
