Distinctive Features of the Programme and the Student Experience Safeguarding is an integral aspect of inter-professional and multi-agency practice with adults across the whole of the public sector following the introduction of the Care Act 2014 in April 2015. The Act clearly outlines the duty of health and social care providers, employers, and professionals, to actively engage in safeguarding adults practice, education and training. This pathway is designed to take an interprofessional approach to learning to enhance professional practice and develop integration within organisational and practice settings to enhance provision of a joined up approach to Safeguarding to protect those most vulnerable and at risk of abuse and neglect in society. The pathway team have drawn on research findings, inquiries and serious case reviews to develop this programme in partnership with employers and stakeholders MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Safeguarding Pathway Specification 5

to facilitate curriculum design which blends practice experience across a range of professional with academic knowledge in its delivery, drawing on the expertise of professionals practicing within the field and academics with a specific interest in this subject area. This pathway adds to the range of MSc pathways offered as part of the MSc Advanced Professional Practice (Health and Social Care Professions) programme in the School of Health Professions and adds to the postgraduate offer across the Faculty. The APP (Health and Social Care Professions) programme lies within the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences in Plymouth University. Delivery is through the School of Health Professions, at the Peninsular Allied Health Centre within the northern University of Plymouth campus and at other locations, such as the Knowledge Spa in Cornwall, in response to consumer demand. Other distinctive features of the pathway and the student experience are; An inter-professional approach to learning Development, and application of, critical reflection skills with a variety of professional groups A safe learning environment in which to develop understanding of other professional groups perspectives on safeguarding adults An opportunity to develop knowledge and skills of other professional group and organisational practices Taught by a research active inter-disciplinary team with international, national and local profiles who will support students to develop their research in the specialist area of safeguarding adults; Developed in consultation with local employers and specialist practitioners in safeguarding Assessment strategy designed to blend practice experience and knowledge to enhance professional practice and service delivery and development in safeguarding adults; Blended learning in delivery incorporating study blocks and distance learning; Support to publish and present dissertation work where appropriate in peer reviewed journals, and at local and national conferences; Opportunity to develop skills in service evaluation and development to lead service improvement at a professional and organisational level; MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Safeguarding Pathway Specification 6

Pathway Structure The MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Safeguarding pathway offers awards of Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters of Science degree. This pathway will be offered as a part time route to professionals who may be employed within health and social care, or allied professional groups and settings. Students may be seconded by their employing agency. The part time route will normally take three years. The maximum registration period for a part time registrant is five years. This pathway may be developed as a full time programme of study at a later date if there is demonstrable consumer demand. The pathway has the following: Core modules: ADV 702 Applying Evidence to Practice ADV 715 Project Design for Research ADV 716 Research Dissertation All are 20 credits apart from the dissertation which is 60 credits. These modules provide a total core of 100 credits. Pathway Specific modules: ADV756 Advanced Critical Reflection, Risk and Decision Making ADV757 Advanced Practice in Safeguarding MSc Advanced Professional Practice in Safeguarding Pathway Specification 7

Optional modules: Students will then proceed to select two other modules selected from across the range of modules offered by the School of Health Professionals or wider in the faculty, possible choices include: LDR503 Developing Self and Others ADV752 Supported Independent Study ADV735 Advancing the Management of Long Term Conditions ADV758 Supporting the Needs of the Frail Older Person Students will complete their Project Design for Research module and the Research Dissertation in an area related to the award title; for this pathway it will be aligned to an area of safeguarding adults practice. Students will discuss their choice of modules and timeline for completion with their pathway lead, personal tutor and in partnership with their seconding employer, where appropriate, to ensure their chosen pathway is congruent with the award title. Timelines will be reviewed at regular points in line with the personal tutor guide. Students will be advised that optional modules are subject to minimum numbers and are advised to check with the Professional Development Unit to confirm that the module will be running two months prior to the proposed delivery dates. Pathway Aims The aim of the pathway is to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills that advance practice by: Enhancing existing professional skills and knowledge to work effectively with the complexity of Safeguarding ; Critically examining knowledge and understanding of application of policy and law which inform professional practice in Safeguarding ; Developing a rigorous understanding of critical reflection as a tool to enhance decision making, practice wisdom and to critique evidence based practice; Increasing students knowledge of current research and theory to support practice in Safeguarding ; Developing understanding of self in practice; Developing capability in managing uncertainty in complex practice; Developing a critical awareness of the contemporary context of practice in relation to the organisation and delivery of services to adults at risk of abuse and the role of multi-agency working in safeguarding adults effectively. 8. Pathway Intended Learning Outcomes 8.1. Knowledge and understanding On successful completion graduates should have developed: 1. A comprehensive and systematic understanding of pivotal knowledge and skills which underpin practice in Safeguarding ; 2. The ability to take responsibility, and be accountable, for their practice in Safeguarding ; 3. An understanding of the inter-relationship between multi-agency working and safeguarding adults; 4. An understanding of the legislative and policy frameworks which support practice in Safeguarding ; 5. An ability to apply knowledge and skills to their individual area of practice and lead in the development of practice; 6. A systematic awareness of research, theory, biases and motivations to evaluate decision making and practice in complex multi-agency practice arenas; 7. Critically evaluate relevant information to inform professional practice in order to ensure timely and appropriate interventions to safeguard adults at risk of abuse and/or neglect; 4. Systematically and critically review databases using appropriate search terms relevant to their research area; 5. Undertake and critically evaluate data collection using qualitative and quantitative methods as appropriate; 6. 8.4. Employment related skills On successful completion graduates should have developed: 1. Advanced skills and knowledge in the arena of safeguarding adults at risk of abuse and/or neglect; 2. An ability to critically, analytically and systematically review the evidence base which informs safeguarding adults practice; 4. Ability to critically apply knowledge and skills to their individual area of practice; 5. Problem solving skills related to their area of professional practice based on critical reflection, appraisal and application of evidence to practice; 6. Writing skills in developing research and design of practice related projects to enhance professional practice. 8.5. Practical skills On successful completion graduates should have developed: 1. Accountable and responsible professional practice when safeguarding adults at risk of abuse and/or neglect; 2. Leadership and management skills which enhance outcomes in safeguarding adults at risk of abuse and/or neglect; 3. Critical reflection and analytical skills in professional decision making; 4. Enhanced communication skills to promote effective multi-agency working; 5. Effectively engage in continuous professional development to maintain professional standards and support effective practice within their role. 9. Admissions Criteria, including APCL, APEL and DAS arrangements Students on this pathway may be self-funded or commissioned by their employer. Self-funded students. In order to commence on this pathway, the student must meet the University s entry requirements for study at postgraduate level. Applicants will normally have a first degree; (BSc (Hons) at 2:2 and above will be considered or the equivalent) e.g in health and social care such as Social Work or Nursing. Students may hold a relevant qualification (usually a degree see below) which may be from health and social care or wider disciplines e.g. Teacher or Police officer. Whilst experience of employment in a safeguarding role is desirable it is not essential as applicants may be moving to work in this field. Commissioned Students Commissioned students: Commissioned students undergo an internal application process with their employer as well as submitting an application to Plymouth University. An application form to complement the employer s application is available from the Professional Development Unit, and must be submitted by all applicants to meet University of Plymouth application requirements. Applicants whose first language is not English must also provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English i.e. IELTS average of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each part. Where students do not meet the 2:2 equivalent above, evidence of successful completion of a Bridging Module ADV602 Developing Professional Competence for non-graduate social workers ( Bridging module ) Or ADV603 Developing Professional Competence for Non-Graduate Health Care Professionals ( Bridging module ) or an upgrade assignment will be considered in addition to their undergraduate or diploma qualifications and overall profile. Each potential student will be assessed individually for their ability to study at this level and an interview may be required. Candidates will normally be required to submit a short piece of writing as part of the admissions process. All applications will be to the Professional Development Unit and the final decision of whether a student is accepted to a programme of study rests with the pathway lead for Plymouth University. APL (including APEL and APCL) Claims for credit of prior learning, whether certificated or experiential, are accepted and will be assessed following university regulations and faculty procedures. APL is not accepted against ADV715 and ADV716 because of the requirement to undertake their dissertation with a project supervisor at Plymouth University. Therefore the maximum at APL to this pathway is 100 credits. European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) This pathway is equivalent to 90 ECTS credits (second cycle) with 30 ECTS credits at post graduate certificate, 60 credits at postgraduate diploma and 90 credits at Masters degree. Each 20 credit module has the equivalent of 10 ECTS credits and assumes a notional student effort of between 200-300 hours. 10. Successful completion of this pathway does not lead to eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council. 11. Exceptions to Regulations Standard University of Plymouth Regulations will apply to this pathway and award.
