General information Remember that learning is an interactive process. The instructors are only too happy to answer your questions in class, in the discussion sections, during office hours. Their office hours are posted above. Make full use of the tutoring hours available to you in the Science Learning Center, where graduate students assigned to be tutors for this course will have their hours posted. It can also be helpful to study with your classmates, but you will be responsible individually for understanding the material on the exams, so you should be sure ultimately that you can do the work yourself. It is essential to realize from the outset that the material in this course cannot be mastered simply by rote learning of facts or equations. You must concentrate on understanding the underlying principles and their application. The key to doing well in physics is to firmly establish these fundamentals and practice their application. Mathematics is the language by which the ideas of physics are expressed. If you are not comfortable with the basics of high-school algebra and trigonometry, you should review them at the earliest possible time and/or ask for help. Please be sure you have also registered for both a Physics 106 laboratory and a Physics 106 discussion section. Physics 105 and Physics 106 must be taken simultaneously. A course outline is included at the end of this document. You should read the appropriate material before it is discussed in class. That way you will be able to focus on the things you do not understand at first and (please) ask relevant questions. Information in this syllabus may be superseded by announcements in class or online. Course Web Site The course web site will be handled through the UIC blackboard system https://blackboard.uic.edu). The blackboard site will list important course information including practice exams, solutions and contact information. It will also be the primary source of up-to-date information for what is happening in the course. 1
Homework Homework is an integral and essential part of the course. It is the method by which you receive feedback on your comprehension of the material. It is therefore very important that you spend time working on understanding the homework problems. In case of difficulty, please contact your instructor, tutors or laboratory TAs for help. We will be using the WebAssign online homework system (http://webassign.net//). It is the essentially same system as often used in other physics, chemistry, and biology courses at UIC. Please make sure that you have purchased the appropriate access code with your textbook. WebAssing Registration and Enrollment What You Need: Please, see instructions on pages 6-8 of this document Self-Study Problems In addition to the on-line homework, in order to better prepare you for the exams, Self-Study problems (SSPs) and their solutions, in the same format as the problems on exam, will be posted on Blackboard each Thursday (https://blackboard.uic.edu). Note: Self-Study Problems will not count towards your course grade, but similar problems may appear on In-Class Quizzes. Pre-lecture Checkpoints Reading the textbook is an essential part of the course, and you will benefit most if you read ahead before coming to the lecture. To encourage you to do so, there will be two assignments per week posted on WebAssign, and designed to get you thinking about the material in the text before it is introduced in lecture. Each assignment consists of several questions some multiple choice, some calculation. No points are deducted for incorrect answers. In-Class Quizzes There will be six scheduled quizzes. The quizzes will occur during the last 15 minutes of the Monday class meetings on the dates marked in the course outline below. Each quiz will consist of two short problems that require you to show your work in how you obtained your solutions. The short problems will be very similar to the problems from the HW and SSP. Each quiz will cover the material since the previous quiz. There will be no In-Class Quiz make-ups no exceptions. The in-class quizzes will be closed book, however formula sheet will be provided for each quiz. In Class Participation We will be using the iclicker (http://www.iclicker.com/) class participation remote system. You will need your own personal remote, as your attendance and participation will be part of your grade. Your same remote can be used for all iclicker classes at UIC, even if different courses are taken during the Summer session. Please note, however, that you cannot share your remote with others as your remote must be associated (registered) with your name for the Summer session if you are to receive credit for your answers. You can purchase this remote at the UIC bookstore, or online. Don't forget to register your remote at the iclicker web site (http://www.iclicker.com/registration). Use your name and enter your UIC EMAIL USERNAME (NetID) for the "STUDENT ID" when registering. Practice exams Practice exam problems and their solutions will be posted on Blackboard (https://blackboard.uic.edu) at least a week before each mid-term and the final exam. We recommend you try and solve the practice exam on your own under "simulated" exam conditions before looking at the solutions. This way you will clearly identify any areas in which you need to study. If you are unable to solve a problem, then put away the exam, go back and 2
look in your notes or the textbook to try and figure out how you would solve it, and then complete the process by actually solving the problem fully without your notes or text book open as a crutch. Examinations Three major written examinations will take place during the course. Each exam will emphasize the new material since the previous major exam, but physics is by nature cumulative and hence basic earlier material can appear on Mid-Term II and the Final Exam. Each exam will cover the material discussed in class and the sections of the textbook noted in the course outline below. All three exams will have a multiple choice format. It is your responsibility to be available for all examinations. This is the most important requirement of this course and no make-up exams will be given no exceptions. Physics is not about memorization and we don't want you wasting your time memorizing equations for exams, so you will be permitted to bring a scientific calculator and one self-prepared 8.5 x 11 inches sheet with equations and your notes on both sides. The major examinations will occur as follows: Mid-term I: Thursday, October 3 Mid-term II: Thursday, November 7 Final Exam: TBP The locations of the exams will be announced in class and on Blackboard when they become available. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you miss a midterm exam with a valid excuse (e.g., illness or emergency), you must notify the instructor and provide supporting documentation verifying your excuse as soon as possible. For a valid excuse with supporting documentation, the average of the other exam scores will be substituted for the missing exam. If you miss a midterm exam without a valid excuse (and supporting documentation), you will receive a score of 0 on that test. If you miss the final exam, you are in trouble. No make-up exams will be given for any reason. Grades Your final score for Physics 105 will be determined as follows: Mid-Term I 20% Mid-Term II 25% Final Exam 30% In-Class Quizzes 10% Pre-lecture assignments 5% In class Participation 5% Online Homework 5% A single letter grade of A, B, C, D or F is assigned at the end of the semester according to the final score each student has earned. The grade of incomplete (I) is given only in special cases according to very strict criteria. 3
