Course Overview Prerequisite: ENG 2D Course Developers: Candice Spykers Course Description This course extends the range of analytic reading, writing, listening, oral communication, and higher level thinking skills that students need for success in the secondary school senior academic program. Students: study and interpret challenging texts from contemporary and historical periods, including novels, poems, media works, essays, and plays; conduct research; write persuasive and literary essays; learn fundamental grammar points to improve their writing in preparation for university; compare their writing to university level writing; analyse media critically (e.g., analyse the relationships among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices). An important focus is on understanding the development of the English language. This course profile demonstrates one way in which the expectations from the Grade 11 University course could be organized into units. Students will read and analyze poems and write poems of their own. Students examine different movements in poetry and use their knowledge in the creation of a poetry anthology.

Unit 2: Novel Study In this unit, students will read a selected novel, such as Margaret Atwood s A Handmaid s Tale, Aldous Huxley s Brave New World or Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. Seminar Group work, research, oral presentations. Unit 3: Shakespeare In this unit, students will read Shakespeare s Macbeth and explore the background and issues related to the text. Students will read much of the text aloud and participate in class discussions as they read. Students will perform scenes from the play and analyze certain key scenes in the play. Students will use their knowledge to write their own informal essays and in the creation of their own original magazine.
