THE LEICESTER ACADEMIC CAREER MAP Our approach to the career structure encourages a balance between breadth and specialisation. We highlight the central importance of research and teaching, while encouraging all colleagues to develop their contributions to, and achievements in, areas such as enterprise, engagement, citizenship and leadership. The Leicester Academic Career Map illustrates expected contributions and achievements across all five domains and all grades, and in each of our career paths. This provides staff with a clear sense of their current grade, but also with a clear sense of what needs to be demonstrated in a case for promotion. The career map assumes that while all members of staff will be active to some extent in all domains, contribution and achievement is not the same as the activity summarised in job descriptions. Contribution and achievement involves making transformational improvements, developing and sharing best practice, and having a positive effect on the and success of others (including colleagues, students and external partners). The career map also assumes that a specific activity will frequently lead to a contribution or achievement in two or more domains. For instance, an innovative enterprise project is likely to include contributions to research and external engagement, and perhaps leadership, as well as to enterprise itself. A significant research grant is likely to provide opportunities for contributions to leadership (for instance, in the mentoring of early career researchers and postdoctoral scholars), and external engagement (in the form of impact activities, or contributions to public debate). All members of academic staff are expected to demonstrate contributions and achievements in the areas of research and teaching (though the former is understood as scholarship in the case of teaching-focused careers, and the latter is understood as teaching and supervision for research-focused careers, acknowledging that project supervision may be the only available way of contributing to teaching in some instances). As career progression should be based upon an individual increasing the breadth, as well as depth, of their contribution to their discipline, department, college and university, grade 8 staff are expected to make a contribution in at least one of the other three domains, grade 9 staff in at least two, and grade 10 staff in at least two, one of which must be leadership. 1. Weightings would be in multiples of ten (so, for example, in the research and teaching career path, the options for an applicant to Grade 10 would be 20/40, 30/30 or 40/20 for research and teaching). 2. Our approach also recognises that there may be exceptional cases of outstanding performance in two or three domains (research and enterprise, for example, or teaching and leadership) that might not match these proposed weightings and for which a successful promotion case could be made. No system can or should rule out such exceptional cases.
