PLEASE JOIN US for the Thursday, August 16th, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm ANA Art Education meeting. Admission is free. This month s Featured NWA artist is Lee Ann Dodson. Lee Ann will give a tour of her studio space at Art Ventures Gallery, will discuss her works currently in process, and then will give an interactive demonstration of how she approaches mixing a palette of oil paints. Art Ventures Gallery is located at 16 W. Center Street in Fayetteville (on the Fayetteville Square). Note: If you would like to participate in this process, please bring a few basic oil paints, (i.e. umber, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, medium yellow, white, alizarin crimson, sap green), a palette knife for mixing, a portable palette with cover, and some linseed oil as well as a good photograph of something you wish to paint with the colors you are going to mix. (It is not at all necessary for you to practice mixing. Watching and listening can be just as effective and fun.) A word from Lee Ann: I apologize to the acrylic painters out there. I have never worked in acrylics and since they dry so quickly, I don t know if this exercise would be possible to do in advance. Lee Ann Dodson grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas and after receiving her BS in Housing and Interior Design at U of A, she spent a semester in Japan on an exchange scholarship, then spent three years working on a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Oregon and the University of Florida. At the end of her course work due to some issues regarding her thesis, Lee Ann took some basic Fine Arts classes at U of F to pursue her lifelong dream of being an artist. Lee Ann had her first gallery exhibit in 1983 and continued to exhibit in several galleries in FLorida with periodic exhibits over the next eight years. Her style went through many transformations- from detailed graphite and primascolor still life drawings to mixed media on paper of Koi and Dreams. She prefers to work in series, developing a body of work with similar style and subject before moving onto the next group. In the early nineties, Lee Ann played an integral role in developing the Arts in Medicine Program at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Her periods of being an artist in residence, culminated in the creation of The Healing Wall, a two-part permanent installation in the main hospital and the Cancer Center comprised of more than 1000 tiles painted in glazes by patients, their families and friends, staff, and volunteers. Throughout this time, Lee Ann continued to do landscapes of her beloved Ozarks in oils and gouache- the two media that have remained her favorite. Recently, she has moved back to the Fayetteville area and is focusing on detailed landscapes and still lifes done in oils on canvas. Currently she has a studio at Art Ventures Gallery NWA in downtown Fayetteville.!5
