Kindergarten (K5) Language Arts The kindergarten language arts curriculum is designed to develop each child s abilities and skills in the following areas: listening, speaking, reading, print awareness, phonological awareness, letter sound relationships, word identification, vocabulary, reading comprehension, literary concepts, grammar, and writing. These skills are intended to be taught with an interdisciplinary approach using the student s instructional level of texts with the content matching the social studies or science unit that is being taught. However, not all materials may match the units perfectly. Mathematics The mathematical concepts taught in kindergarten are based on the Excel Math curriculum. Excel Math is based on continuous approach where concepts learned in K-4 are revisited and new concepts are introduced and repeated throughout the year. Additional materials are also used to supplement the Excel resources to challenge advanced students. Positions, Sorting, and Patterns Identify the location of position words: top, bottom, in front of, behind, above, up, over, high, low, below, down, under, low, between Sort objects by given attributes Label a pattern according to name (i.e. ABAB, ABCABC, AABB ) Counting: Count from 1 to 100, count by ones, tens, fives and twos. Compare Set: Identify most/fewest/same items in a set Wrting Numerals: Write numbers from 1 to 30; 50; to 100 Recognizing Number Words: Trace and write number words zero to 100 Number Series: Fill in the missing numeral in a series (_17, 18, _20) Addition and Whole Numbers: Tell addition stories and add numbers. Subtraction of Whole Numbers: Tell subtraction stories and subtract numbers. Time: Tell time by the hour using a digital or analog clock Money: Identify money such a penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar bill. Measurement: Identify which object s length is long, longer, longest; short, shorter, shortest; tall, taller, tallest Geometry: Identify shapes such as, a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, diamond, oval, pyramid, etc. Problem Solving: Deductive reasoning, Logical reasoning and Trial and error Probability and Statistics: Pictograph, Bar graph, Combinations Social Studies and Science

The social studies and science Core Knowledge Curriculum requirements of kindergarten are broken down into thematic units that are taught through an interdisciplinary approach, extending into the language arts curriculum. ME AND MY COMMUNITY All about Me and My Family: Identify what makes himself/herself a special and unique person My Community: Identify community workers and their responsibilities Safety: Understand why we have safety rules in the community Wright Brothers: Identify their accomplishments in the aviation field Columbus: Tell about the importance of his work SEASONS and WEATHER: Identify four seasons and tell the type of weather each season has FIVE SENSES: Name the five senses and tell how each sense is used to learn about something. Native Americans:Tell about the life of a Native American tribe. Pilgrims: Tell the reason for their migration to America Animals: Identify the needs of animals to live and grow CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD: To be familiar with Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanza WINTER AND LIFE IN COLD REGION: Identify the type of weather associated with winter and locate the Arctic and Antarctic Black History Month:To be able to discuss the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s and Rosa Park s contribution U.S. PRESIDENTS: Name the Presidents on Mount Rushmore and talk about each one. U.S. SYMBOLS: Identify symbols such as the Bald Eagle, Flag, and etc. MAGNETS: Explore magnets to classify materials that either are or are not attracted by magnets THE HUMAN BODY: Talk about the function on each body part is and discuss ways we can keep our body healthy TAKING CARE OF THE EARTH: Identify natural resources, how we use them, and why they are important to use wisely; Identify ways they can conserve natural resources (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Plants: Label parts of a plant and name things plants need to grow. OCEAN LIFE: Name things found in the ocean. OUTER SPACE: Name the planets and other things in space

First Grade Language Arts: First grade Language Arts includes reading, writing, and speaking. Students will increase skills in reading comprehension, fluency, and decoding skills through reading stories, writing activities, book work, spelling and word families, and phonics. Mathematics: The students will study patterns and classifications, identify numbers and develop number sense, and identify and use money. In addition they will develop addition and subtraction skills and work on solving problems and equations. They will also be familiar with instruments of measurement and geometry. This will be done through teacher instruction, use of math worksheets, manipulative and hands-on activities. Science: First grade science includes the study of living things and their environments, the human body, the properties of matter and measurement, an introduction to electricity and the solar system and a study of the geographical features of the earth. Students will learn through hands-on activities, reading material, teacher directed discussions and experiments. Social Studies: The students will be learning how our country has grown over time. They will read about the people in their world and how they get along. Also, they will compare the ways people live in many different places. Language Arts Second Grade Language Arts consists of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Second graders practice and learn these skills through the Trophies reading series. In addition, students start out each day with DOL, they keep spelling dictionaries, write in journals and create books from their phonics lessons. Mathematics The students will master addition and subtraction facts, solve problems by regrouping and begin multiplication and division. In addition they will work on telling time, using money and solving word problems. This will be done through teacher instruction, use of

math worksheets, manipulatives and hands-on activities Science Children gain knowledge about the world around them in part from observation and experience. To understand weather, magnetism, insect life cycles, or human body systems, children need opportunities to observe and experiment. Social Studies Children will learn how Americans choose leaders and make laws. In addition, they will look at the rights and responsibilities of citizens. They will also learn about the geography of North America, and its history. We will also discuss other world cultures and regions and how early explorers used the ocean to explore the world in various kinds of water craft. Furthermore, we will learn about the jobs people do to earn money, how they choose to spend their money and how the money cycle works. Lastly, we will learn about Ancient China and discuss customs and traditions of foreign nations in our classroom. Students will learn these ideas and concepts through teacher directed discussions, reading materials, and projects like ship building and engineering. Language Arts Third Grade The Third Grade Language Arts Standards are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. It is divided into Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language strands. For conceptual clarity, the processes of communication are closely connected. Through reading a diverse array of classic and contemporary literature as well as challenging informational texts in a range of subjects, students are expected to build knowledge, gain insights, explore possibilities, and broaden their perspective.

While the Standards delineate specific expectations in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language, each standard need not be a separate focus for instruction and assessment. Often, several standards are addressed by a single rich task. Mathematics The Excel Math all new 3 rd grade curriculum teaches place value and counting, addition of whole numbers, subtraction of whole numbers, multiplication of whole numbers, division of whole numbers, fraction, money, time clock, time calendar, odd and even numbers, story problems, measurements, geometry, pre algebra, estimating, probability, and graphs. Science Third Grade science includes both hands-on experience and observation, along with book learning in order to give students a systematic approach to investigating the natural world, learning about interesting science ideas, and linking science to other subjects. Social Studies Third grade Social Studies includes geographic knowledge, including spatial sense, physical processes, interactions between humans and their environment, relations between place and culture, and an awareness of the characteristics of specific regions and cultures. Fourth Grade Language Arts

For Language Arts, students will learn from the various elements of language study: Reading, Spelling, Grammar, Writing, and Listening. Most of the novels read, projects completed, and spelling lists will be based on the theme being presented at the time. Occasionally, the students will be allowed to pick the novel that he/she reads. Most spelling lists will be created from vocabulary from the novels being read, the topic being covered in other areas, or areas dictated by the students abilities. Writing assignments many times will be based on the theme being taught. To reinforce reading for pleasure and understanding, students will do book reports and be quizzed. Math Students will expand on the knowledge learned in previous years. The school year will start with a review of place value, number sense, addition and subtraction. Students will expand on their basic skills in multiplication and division of whole number to two digits. Students will explore fractions and be introduced to adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators and mixed numbers and give their answers in reduced form. Students will also expand on their knowledge of basic measurement and conversion in both the customary and metric systems. Students will also build on their knowledge of working with US dollars by review the money s value and making change. Story problems will be worked as they come up with topics. Science Students will explore various topics in Science. There will be many activities and experiments to expand on the concepts learned. Topics discussed will be Geology, Electricity, Weather, Basic ideas of Matter, and various body systems. Topics will be covered as they relate to Social Studies themes as much as possible. Concepts expand on ideas learned in third grade and prepare students for concepts they will learn in fifth grade. Social Studies During the Fourth Grade year, student will explore the world. Students will review some of the topics in map reading learned in previous years and build on their knowledge in the areas of map scales, grids, and relief maps. There is a concentration on mountains. Students will also learn about the geography of areas studied. Students will then explore World Civilizations during the approximate time of 600 AD to 1300 BC. Civilizations investigated include Medieval Europe, Ancient Chinese Empires, the spread of Islam, and the Ancient African kingdoms. For American History, students will discover the American Revolution, the forming of the United States Constitution and how it relates to the CNMI Constitution, and the first seven Presidents of the United States.

Language Arts Fifth Grade Language Arts covers a wide variety of subjects: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. It is very important that fifth graders are able to communicate clearly through speaking and writing. Fifth graders need to be good listeners and they need to know how to act appropriately as an audience. Students can learn to be better readers, writers and presenters by listening to others. Before 6 th grade, students should be able to write and express thoughts clearly through complete sentences and detailed, well-written paragraphs. Math Fifth grade math includes developing skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, solving problems and equations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurements, conversions, and geometry, including three dimensional figures. Science The fifth grade science I have planned is based on the themes covered in the Harcourt Science Textbook. The first quarter we cover weather and climate as well as animal and plan classification. Second quarter we cover plant adaptations and how people use energy. Third quarter we cover the oceans and cycles in nature. Fourth quarter we cover biomes and protecting and preserving ecosystems. Social Studies Fifth grade Social Studies curriculum is an ongoing development. We start the year learning about immigration as well as our own cultures. This helps us to understand the makeup of Saipan and how our culture has had an impact here. We then study all the surrounding islands in the Pacific and their cultures. Third quarter is an intensive study on geography and how to better read maps. We then wrap up the year with a project that they choose their favorite location to do a presentation on.
