YEAR 11 PROGRAM - 2017 INITIAL ELECTIVES SELECTION Student Name: House: Tutor: The Year 11 and Year 12 Student Course Guide provides an overview of the VCE and Unit Descriptions for all VCE Studies offered at the College. It also includes information about VET in the VCE and VCAL Programs. Read this information carefully and check tertiary course prerequisites in VICTER 2019 before making your choices. Seek advice from Mrs Moore (VET), Mr Beecham (VCAL), Mr Wood, Mrs Kee and VCE teachers. What are your intentions for the Year 2017? (Please tick the appropriate box) I am returning to the College to complete Year 11 I am unsure about completing Year 11 at this stage What type of program do you wish to study in Year 11? (Please tick the appropriate box) VCE PROGRAM Religious Education Units and Five Yr 11 VCE studies VCE PROGRAM Religious Education Units, Four Yr 11 VCE studies & One Yr 12 VCE study (Selected students only) VCE/VET PROGRAM - Religious Education Units, Four Yr 11 VCE studies and a VET Course VCAL including a VET PROGRAM Important: For an Elective Unit to be taught in 2017, or how many Elective Unit classes for a particular Elective there will be, is dependent upon four factors: - the number of students electing the VCE Elective Units - the way Elective Units are blocked against each other, as a result of student choice. - the availability of teachers to teach the Elective Units. - the availability of specialist classrooms. What happens next? Using your initial selections, a blocked Year 11 timetable structure for 2017 will be designed. Your final Year 11 Program will then be confirmed or reviewed with you later in Term 3. Student Signature: Parent /Guardian Signature: Head of House Signature: Date: Date: Date: This completed and signed form must be returned to Student Reception or the Academic Support Office no later than Wednesday 10 th August, earlier if possible. INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS 2017 VCE Students: Complete pages 1 and 3 only 2017 VCE Accelerated Students: Complete pages 1, 3 and 4 only 2017 VCE VET Students: Complete pages 1, 3 and 5 only 2017 VCAL students: Complete pages 1, 5 and 6 only Year 11 VCE Students at Marist-Sion College study Twelve Units 1 Unit of Religious Education each semester and five other Units each semester. The following semester units are compulsory: Religion and Society Unit 1 and Texts and Traditions Unit 1 one studied each semester English Unit 1 or Literature Unit 1, in first semester English Unit 2 or Literature Unit 2, in second semester Eight other semester units should be selected. It is usual to study a Units 1 and 2 sequence to provide the best preparation for completion of the Units 3 and 4 level of the study in Year 12. The preferential order of the choices that you make is most important, and is taken into careful consideration when the College Administration is making decisions about the VCE Units that will be taught in 2017, and the number of classes in each Unit. VCE Students must complete the following steps when filling in their selections on Page 3. Step 1: Select 1 st preference - Choice of English Study option (Units 1 and 2 sequence) Note rules in the Student Course Guide. If you would like to study 2 sequences of the English options, list the second sequence as one of your remaining Preferences. Step 2: Select 2 nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6 th and 7th Preferences Choose from the Units 1 & 2 sequences listed in the Initial Selection Table to make up your VCE Year 11 program. Your 6 th and 7 th preferences are preferences to allow flexibility in creating your program. If you have been invited to accelerate into a Year 12 Units 3 and 4 VCE sequence include the study you have chosen in preference order in the Table on Page 4. VET in the VCE and VCAL Programs Students interested in applying for VET in the VCE and VCAL Programs must ensure that they read all of the information contained in the Year 11 and 12 Student Course Guide, 2017 and in VET and VCAL Pamphlets available from Mrs Moore (VET) and Mr Beecham (VCAL). Check all details regarding VET program location, operation, costs and outcomes. Students who express an interest in VET in the VCE programs must ensure that they include the particular VCE studies recommended for their preferred program in their Initial VCE Unit Preferences. Students who are successful in their application for selection into the programs may need to review their VCE unit selections later this year. This is necessary as they will study fewer VCE Units in their program. Do you need further assistance? Who can help you? Mrs Kee manages the selection process, acceleration, general enquiries and support. Mrs Lilford and Mr Wood, as Curriculum Leaders, provide support with general enquiries. Mrs Moore manages Careers and Pathways and is available by appointment to offer careers and course advice. Mrs Moore and Mr Beecham provide information about VET and VCAL programs. All VCE teachers are able to provide information specific to their VCE teaching area. Heads of House will discuss the initial Year 11 selections with each student (please arrange an interview time with your Head of House if required) and they must sign the selection form. What happens next? From the initial selection preference sheet, a blocked subject structure will be constructed for Year 11, 2017. Students will be advised individually about how their preferences fit into this blocking and will need to make additional selections of units where subject clashes arise. Students who have indicated preferences for a VET Program or a VCAL Program will be contacted by Mrs Moore and Mr Beecham to confirm program choice and details. Page 2
