YEAR 8 VISIT GEEVOR MINE Year 8 recently explored our local history and heritage by visiting one of Cornwall s largest and most historic mines. Divided into smaller groups they were guided through an adit, taken on a tour of the surface workings of the mine and also developed a piece of creative writing. The mine workings are extensive and date back to the Bronze Age although the focus of the mine is very much its place in the Industrial world. One thing that is very special about Geevor is that former miners still work at the mine and add knowledge and experience to our visit that is priceless. Indeed several of our students have family that worked at Geevor until it closed in 1990. This year it was particularly touching that our students were able to find pictures of their family and have miners tell them stories about the shenanigans that went on. The day could not have gone better with glorious sunshine and well behaved students the order of the day. It was great to see students applying the knowledge they had gained in lessons and asking questions of the guides and miners. Back at school, students are continuing to develop their local history knowledge and Geevor have also kindly leant us a box of artefacts which is supporting the learning in lessons. 3
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS IMPRESS St Ives School Young Enterprise students faced t h e c h a l l e n g e o f identifying product ideas for their company. Students planned how they d take charge of the retail industry by running their own school shop and potentially expanding into St Ives stores. Mark Adams, their teacher said: It was great to see the students working together, discussing their ideas and coming up with realistic solutions. After a morning of team work the students presented their plans to an ex-student, Kate De Seta, who runs Academy & Co, a St Ives retail and exclusive home ware store, with her brother. Kate said: I m thrilled to have been offered the chance to share my experience of setting up and running a business from scratch, to help students succeed with their business adventure. Kate was on hand to give suggestions and advice. I was inspired by how mature the students were and how they presented. I can see real potential in their ideas - it s exciting times for the up and coming students of St Ives. MAYORAL TREAT FOR PEGASUS AWARD WINNERS Ten St Ives students were treated to a memorable evening in the Council Chamber when they were presented their Pegasus Awards by the town s Mayor, Councillor Linda Taylor. The Pegasus Award promotes key skills and values and the school offers it to students as a way to introduce the Duke of Edinburgh s Award scheme available to students in Years 10-11. The Council Chamber was an ideal location for the ceremony as it marked an important milestone for four of the winners who received their Gold Awards. Katie Nash, Sam Peters, Marcus Manley and Jamie Gregory have been involved with Pegasus since it was launched in 2014 and have completed their Bronze and Silver Awards. Reuben Veal, Elis Richards, Reef Slack, Oliver Brunnock, Zac Broomfield and Amelia Goodwin were all presented with their Silver Awards and many of the young people have now moved on to the Duke of Edinburgh s Award Scheme. During the presentation, Councillor Taylor congratulated all participants and explained that the opportunities available through Pegasus would prove vital in later life. We are all so very impressed with their efforts she said, these young people are a real credit to the town, to their families and to their school. Pegasus requires participants to undertake regular periods of volunteering. These sessions are then timebanked as part of Volunteer Cornwall s My Way project and through this, the efforts of the young people help to fund meals for needy communities both in the UK and abroad. Congratulations to all the students and we are looking forward to awarding the next batch of Pegasus Awards in the near future.
