Diagnostic Test and Precalculus Review Math10550 Fall 2018 (hyperlinks are in blue) Diagnostic Test You are required to take a diagnostic test, which has been set up in Sakai (You can find the Sakai App on InsideND). You can find the Diagnostic test under the PlaceU link, on the left of the home page of your section of Math 10550 in Sakai. When you open the test, you will have the opportunity to work through a tutorial and some practice questions before you start the actual test. Once you start the test, you will have two hours to finish it (Most likely, the test will take about 90 minutes to complete). If you are normally granted extra time on exams, you may e-mail your instructor for an accommodation code, which you can enter at the start of the test. This will extended your time to three hours. You should NOT use a calculator or consult outside resources when taking the test. The test will open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday Aug 21 and will close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday Aug. 24. When you finish the test, you will have the opportunity to build your own review module, which will give you access to videos and practice problems, to help you review the topics on which you missed a question. The purpose of the test is to help you identify any weaknesses that you need to correct before they become problematic. Obviously, it is important to be honest with yourself when taking the test. The test includes some problems on exponentials and logarithms. You should review these topics prior to Calculus II, but they will not be used in Calculus I. You will get 5 extra credit points for working through the test before the due date. Access to Review Materials In addition to the review materials available with the diagnostic test, we have set up a review module in Webassign. The Cengage Unlimited option allows free access to a precalculus book, by Stewart et. al., in addition to the regular Calculus book for three semesters. This is an excellent resource and I encourage everyone to make use of this opportunity by signing into the precalculus review module on webassign. Because this is a new option, our review module is a work in progress and will be completed in the first few weeks of semester. It will be followed by further review modules, based on the same book, for future courses. After you register for the regular homework in Webassign, you should also sign in to the review module: Precalculus Review 10550-10560, Class Key nd 8928 8264. Free access to this module for the semester is available to those who purchase the Cengage Unlimited, $119.99, option. 1
Even if you do not need to review any material from precalculus now, you will also have free access to review materials for Calculus III, from the same book next year, if you purchase Cengage Unlimited, $119.99 and sign into this module during this semester. We have some notes and videos available on our website: Algebra/Precalculus Review for Math 10550. These videos and notes have been incorporated into the webassign review module along with practice problems. Precalculus Review 10550-10560 The webassign module Precalculus Review 10550-10560 can be used in many ways. All topics in the module are open from the beginning of semester. Although all topics on the list have not been assigned yet, all assignments should be complete and available before the mid-semester break. The topics do not appear in the order in which the do in the book. This is because a quick review of functions and trigonometry is necessary for the first few weeks of class. You may choose to work through the topics in the order presented or in the order in which they appear in the e-book (available within the module). The topics have due dates based on when the material is required in class, if you wish to work through the topic after the due date, you may request an extension, up to two weeks after the due date, which should be granted automatically. You may do this an unlimited number of time (before the end of the course). For each topic a test and an assignment are included. My suggestions for reviewing are to first consult the list of topics below and skim the corresponding sections in the e-book, to find out which ones you want to review. If you are unsure of whether you know a topic, take the test for that topic. If you can answer all of the questions in the test, you know the topic, if not work through the relevant videos and sections in the assignment for the topic. It is suggested that you work through the Topics 1-24 as quickly as possible. When working through a topic, you can read the relevant section of the book and watch the videos embedded in the book and/or read the notes provided and watch the videos in the assignment. If working with a tutor, they will help you make a review plan based on the output of your diagnostic test (which you should print out and bring along to your meeting). 2
