The IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The IB Mission Statement To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

The IB Mission Statement These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

OHS s Mission Statement Ooltewah High School endeavors to develop students, who are knowledgeable, compassionate, lifelong learners prepared to actively participate as citizens in a global society.

Candidate Status Ooltewah High School is a Diploma Program school. These are schools that share a common philosophy a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that OHS believes is important for our students. *Only schools authorized by the IB organization can offer any of its three academic programs: the Primary Years Program (PYP), the Middle Years Program (MYP), or the Diploma Program. What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program? v A pre-university diploma program v Provides international admissions credentials v Utilizes international standards v Based on an integrated curriculum v Infused with international mindedness

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program v The IB Diploma Program is designed for highlymotivated 11 th and 12 th grade students who are looking for a challenging and rigorous curriculum and are willing to put in the time needed to be successful. v Students fulfill the requirements of the state s educational guidelines due to the rigor of the IB program. The state of Tennessee has approved the IB Diploma path.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program v There are currently 3067 IB schools in 138 countries around the world; 1203 IB World Schools are in the U.S.A. v There are currently ten Tennessee public IB High Schools: Cookeville High School, Franklin High School, Germantown High School, Hillsboro High School, Hillwood High School, Hunter s Lane High School, Oakland High School, Ridgeway High School, Science Hill High School, and Signal Mountain. Lausanne in the Memphis area is a private IB high school. v 72% of IB candidates who attempt the full diploma are awarded it in the U.S. v 79% worldwide receive the IB Diploma

Research on the Impact of IB programs IB students outperform their peers on state assessments. IB Diploma students have higher acceptance rates to colleges. IB Diploma students perform better in post-secondary education than their peers. IB standards are aligned with best practice in education and support effective teaching practices. IB Learner Profile The aim of all IB programs is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB Curriculum Students are required to take six IB academic core courses: Language A Mother tongue English A (45 languages available) Language B (World Language) German, Spanish, French (18 others available) Individuals and Societies History of the Americas, Geography, Economics, Philosophy, Psychology, Information Technology, Anthropology (Courses in red offered at OHS)

International Baccalaureate Diploma Requirements Take at least three higher level (HL) and no more than three standard level (SL) courses One course from groups 1-5, and a 6 th subject Higher level (HL) 240 hours instruction *Exams taken in senior year externally assessed Standard level (SL) 150 hours instruction Exams taken in junior/senior year externally assessed Complete core elements (Extended Essay, CAS, Theory of Knowledge) *all HL courses are designed as two year learning experiences

IB Diploma vs. IB Certificates What are IB certificates? A student who has elected to take fewer than six subjects, is awarded a certificate for the examinations completed. An IB certificate reflecting the grade earned (1 7) is issued to students upon completion of each Diploma Program course and exam. Can a student take individual IB courses or does he/she have to study the whole Diploma Program? Students can take individual IB courses; however, the strength of the IB Diploma Program is in the diploma itself, and schools are expected to promote the whole diploma. Students who enroll in individual courses will receive an IB certificate noting the courses they took and the marks they earned. How many IB certificates can be taken? There is no minimum or maximum number of IB certificates that can be taken. Do IB certificates have to be all at standard level? No, a candidate can take a mixture of standard level and higher level subjects

How are IB courses credited by Tennessee and HCDE? All IB courses are weighted: 5 points are added to the final grade of each course. Universities and colleges all over the world recognize the International Baccalaureate diploma. Check each university s website to see how much credit is awarded for successful completion of IB exams.

International Baccalaureate Assessments End of course IB exams are externally assessed. A variety of other assessments are internally developed and assessed by teachers. Internal assessments may be externally scored or internally scored and moderated by IB. The student s final IB grades are derived from a combination of internal and external assessment scores.

Other IB Diploma Requirements Theory of Knowledge Class (TOK) Core of IB curriculum Critical reflection on knowledge and experience Inquiry into different ways of knowing and different kinds of knowledge Connections between academic disciplines and life experiences 100 hours of instruction time over 2 years

Other IB Diploma Requirements The Extended Essay (EE) 4,000 words (maximum) Written on a topic of special interest and expected to be at the university level of research Topic will come from one of the subjects being studied. Essays are externally scored. EE is counted as Senior Project by state of Tennessee

Other IB Diploma Requirements CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) Enhance personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and based on learner outcomes In order to be meaningful, activities should continue throughout the program. A school staff member is responsible for working with the student to develop his or her plan..5 P.E. credit required by the state is waived with CAS activities

How do I earn the IB Diploma? v All assessment components for each of the six subjects and the additional IB diploma requirements must be successfully completed in order to be awarded the IB Diploma. v Performance in each of the six IB diploma subjects is graded on a scale of 1 point (minimum) to 7 points (maximum). A maximum of 3 points is awarded for combined performance in Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. v The total score is a combination of scores in the 6 IB courses combined with points for TOK and EE. v The IB Diploma will be awarded to a candidate whose total score is at least 24 with other conditions met. The maximum total Diploma Program point score is 45.

Important to know: Transfer students in the 9 th grade can enter the DP, but need to consult with guidance and the IB coordinator to plan path. Students who take Algebra 1 in 9 th grade can enter DP, but also need to consult with guidance and the IB coordinator. Non-transfer students are expected to take the same Language B for all years of the Diploma Program.
