STUDY GUIDE 2018 19 Your Study Programme Individually tailored to meet your needs and ambitions through careers, work-related learning and enrichment.

Enrichment at BSix BSeven introduction A key part of your study programme is enrichment. This is a core component for every student and the aim is to increase your skills, confidence and enjoyment whilst at College. Universities, apprenticeship providers and employers need to see a range of transferable skills on your CV and personal statement, not just good qualifications. BSeven is the department that organises all of the extended learning opportunities which happen outside the classroom. These are designed, reviewed and regularly refreshed through listening to student opinions and needs. BSeven leads on Careers, Work experience and Enrichment clubs and societies.

Categories 1 and 2 Careers and Work-related learning are compulsory for all students. Your curriculum department will have planned and scheduled your work-experience options as part of your course and the careers team will collaborate with your personal tutor to ensure you receive as much support as possible. Categories 3 and 4 for you to select something that you are interested in a society and/or a club from one of the Enrichment pathways. There will be more information available at the Enrichment Fair which you will attend as part of your College Induction. Additional activities may be added during the year dependent on demand. Specifics of times and days for each activity will be shared via tutorial and can be accessed via the BSeven team in the canteen. Up to date information will also be emailed to you for enrichment options that you have expressed interest in. Every student must choose one additional activity, but you are free to choose more than one if it fits with your timetable, and in consultation with your tutor who will help guide you to a study programme tailored to your needs and ambitions. 3

1. Careers and progression support Every student will receive a 1-to-1 careers interview Group careers sessions are planned for all tutor groups e.g. CV workshops A planned programme of Industry speakers and employability sessions Apprenticeship club Into University programmes 2. Work experience All students have a work placement as part of their study programme during their BSix student journey (but not necessarily every year) Some courses have extended industry work placements as a compulsory part of their course e.g. Childcare and Healthcare* Relevant high quality work-related activities are built into the course plan for students not going out on work placement this might take the form of careers carousels, careers days or work place visits *We are now working with Erasmus who provide overseas work placement opportunities students have to have met certain requirements on their course to be eligible for this amazing opportunity! 4

3. Enrichment Societies: Hackney University Extension (HUE) You can pick one of these if appropriate and / or an Enrichment Pathway option in section 4. BSix runs an award-winning university partnership programme. Y12 students at BSix and other partner schools in Hackney can apply for these courses. Listed below are the confirmed universities and subjects that are planned for 2018/19. Each programme will involve academic seminars held either at BSix, Citibank or at the university itself. Students will visit the university they are working with at least once and several of the programmes include an Easter conference or summer school held at the university! The impact of these programmes has been formally recognised for how they equip students with the skills and confidence to achieve higher grades on their course, apply for universities they might otherwise not have considered and have the confidence to perform better at interview and start university with the study skills they need for higher education. Personal Development pathway Knowledge is Power series Free from the pressures of examination, we offer a series of events, short courses and workshops to debate some of the major issues facing society and young people today. Bringing together the latest scholarship, community expertise and local heritage, we shall debate how schooling, social media, youth violence, relationships, money and more, shape our lives and learning. How can psychology help us understand relationships and overcome social media anxiety? How can economics help us make money? How can sociology help us explain stereotypes around youth violence and offer solutions to knife crime? How can writing a poem or a song connect us to others? Our visiting poets, musicians, journalists and academics are keen to hear what you think about these issues and to build powerfully on your existing knowledge. Debating such issues with these professionals will expand your knowledge and also introduce you to new career possibilities. You do not have to be studying the subject listed to attend the enrichment; although if you are studying a specific subject, your personal tutor may guide you to engage with this programme to supplement your studies and progression opportunities. 10
