RJH Newsletter October 2017 Volume 2 Happy Fall Everyone! First quarter ended on October 9th. RJH has been processing grades to have grade cards ready for conferences on Wednesday, October 25th. Conferences are only ONE night at RJH and take place from 4-7pm. When you come to conferences, you are welcome to visit with one or all of your child s teachers on a first come first serve basis. You do not have to make an appointment to meet with your child s teachers. RJH has an active parent group that is meeting monthly. This group is the RJH Home & School Partnership. We have the philosophy of getting parents involved with different RJH activities as parents are able to. The group has a Facebook Page: RJH Home and School Partnership Please find it and join our page. This page is a way to receive more information about the happenings at RJH. In addition, the parents are planning a dance for the students in December and would love for you to join us in sponsoring this event. To help with the dance, please contact Liz Sperry or myself. Winter sports practice is starting soon. The winter sports at RJH consist of 7th & 8th Grade Boys & Girls Basketball. The boys will begin practice at 6:00 AM, while the girls will practice immediately after school. Watch the daily announcements for the exact start dates. I want to take a moment to thank you for sharing your child with us. It is a pleasure to work with your children everyday. It s a great day to be a Bulldog. Sincerely, Dr. Fulton
First quarter Parent/Teachers Conferences will be held Wednesday, October 25th from 4pm - 7:00pm. Rolla Jr High Conferences are drop-in, not a scheduled conference. Parents are encouraged to attend and grade cards will be available for you to pick up at that time. Also, this is a great opportunity to speak with your child s teachers. Please call the Counselor s Office at 573-458-0131 if you have any questions. Each month at RJH, students that demonstrate positivity and the bulldog code are nominated to become Student of the Month. Congratulations! Taylor Heimbaugh, Wyatt Lewis, Madison Mace, & Adam Hounsom We have had a busy month in the library! We have circulated 6,783 books so far this school year. We continue to work with the English and Reading classes to tie our lessons with their learning standards. Our book Genre of the month is the Mystery/Suspense section. Students are enjoying scary stories during the month of October as well as throughout the year. This Genre is one of our most popular and gets a lot of attention from students. Our first quarter AR incentive is under way and this week 7th grade students are having a great time with our makerspace supplies. There has been a lot of interest in our yarn with students working on our round looms to create items. Duct tape is a big interest as well, the students will cover all most anything in Duct Tape. Also of interest are our circuit kits and our Makey Makey kits. Students love to explore and learn more about science with these items. One group of students even learned how to make a controller for a game with the Makey makey kit. Legos still reign supreme though, I don't know if anyone quite outgrows the feeling of making something from a bunch of plastic bricks. We have also been working with a class who is reading the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Each time their class has visited the library, they have completed a different challenge. The first was to create a paper airplane that could not only fly the furthest distance but also float on water the longest time without sinking. There was much redesigning and thinking about what to change each time they created their airplane. The other project that they completed was to create a temporary shelter out of found materials. They gathered all kinds of leaves and grass and were quite creative in building their shelters. Did you know? Information about the RJH Library can be found on our Google Site s page: https:// sites.google.com/rolla.k12.mo.us/rjh-library-ingram/home. This includes information about AR, as well as looking up a book in our library and pictures from events in the library. Go check it out!
Pharaoh project - Mrs. Koppelmann s class 7th Grade World History researched the life of an ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. Students then used their knowledge to bring that Pharaoh "back to life". Students wrote introductions for their Pharaohs, outlining important contributions to the Egyptian society and what happened to Egypt upon the Pharaoh's death. Students also designed appropriate attire for their specific Pharaoh as they presented the Pharaoh to the class.

It s amazing how fast the first quarter has flown by! We are busy wrapping up first quarter grades and look forward to visiting with all who attend our parent teacher conferences on October 25 from 4 to 7PM. Mrs. Snodgrass and Mr. Jamison have spent time in the Health classrooms covering the topic of suicide prevention. It was a productive time talking about a difficult subject. Students were surprised to learn that in the age group of 10 years to 24 years, suicide is in the top 3 causes of death. Other information shared with the students included: *Over 5000 young people ages 10-24 die of suicide every year in the United States. *Talking to a person about their suicidal feelings will not cause them to attempt suicide. Talking about those feelings compassionately does help prevent suicide. *There are identifiable warning signs such as verbal threats, previous attempts, depression, sudden changes in behavior, and the making of final arrangements. Suicide is preventable. Resources are available for people who need help. Students were told that if they, or a friend, are struggling with suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors, to contact a responsible adult immediately. They should never keep it a secret or try to handle it alone. If you would like more information or have questions about suicide prevention, please contact us at the numbers below. As always, feel free to contact us anytime with questions or concerns. RJH Move it Monday! Move It Mondays! Do Mondays seem boring? I challenge you to make Mondays more interesting in your classrooms. Teachers must have at least 1 activity in each class each Monday that includes physical movement, student collaboration, or active learning. Here is an idea from a Facebook Principal s Group. These are some examples of what a junior high school did on Move It Monday! I had teachers using the Goose chase app and JH kids were running (sometimes literally) all over the building finding pieces of the activity the Science teacher set up. One of my ELA teachers had kids up and speaking the parts of their Thesis and supporting statements. Another teachers had them going around the school taking pictures of examples of things like: Proper Nouns, Titles, different literary representations. I also had a math teacher who took her kids out to the sidewalk and they worked math problems in sidewalk chalk!! HUGE SUCCESS TODAY!
