NATIONAL LOUIS UNIVERSITY PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT CREDIT BY EXAMINATION DSST/ DANTES Internet Based Testing April June 2014 What is Credit by Examination? NLU awards credit by examination for eligible students who have achieved acceptable scores on DSST (formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). You might wish to explore the option of examinations as a way to gain additional credits needed for degree completion. Where can I take the exams? Internet based DANTES exams are administered at NLU s Lisle campus. Computer-based CLEP tests may be taken at NLU s Lisle or Chicago campuses. Both tests may be taken at other colleges, including many community colleges. If you take an exam at another institution, your score report should be sent to NLU for awarding of transfer credit (score recipient #8340 for DANTES and #1310 for CLEP). Who qualifies to take exams at NLU? Undergraduate students or graduate students seeking undergraduate credit may register. NLU is an open CLEP testing center, while we are a closed DANTES testing center, requiring that students be admitted to the university. Attention all NLU students regarding residency credits: All students new to NLU since January 2011 cannot use CLEP or DANTES credits to fulfill their last 12 hours at NLU. Please see your academic advisor for details. What do DANTES tests cover and how much time is needed to complete a test? DANTES tests measure learning in some business and academic areas, including humanities, mathematics, physical and life sciences, social sciences and technical writing. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. If you attain the minimum acceptable score for a DANTES test, you will earn 5 quarter hours of credit. See page 3 for a complete listing of tests. Students have two hours to complete the exam. What do CLEP tests cover? CLEP tests measure knowledge of academic topics through five subject areas (Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Business). CLEP tests are timed, but there is no penalty for wrong or skipped answers. Credit awards vary from 5 QH to 18 QH. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: 1. Always check with your Academic Advisor to avoid course overlap or duplication and to assure test credits will apply to your program. If you are an undergraduate student contact the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center at 1-800-443-5522 ext. 5900. MAT and all graduate students must also contact their Graduate Academic Advisor at the same number. 2. Complete the registration form included in this packet.
