NATIONAL LOUIS UNIVERSITY PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT CREDIT BY EXAMINATION DSST (DANTES) Internet Based Testing Lisle Campus June December 2018 What is Credit by Examination? NLU awards credit by examination for eligible students who have achieved acceptable scores on DSST (formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Tests) and the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). You might wish to explore the option of examinations as a way to gain additional credits needed for degree completion. Where can I take the exams? Internet based DANTES exams are administered at NLU s Lisle campus. Computer-based CLEP tests may be taken at NLU s Lisle or Chicago campuses. Both tests may be taken at other colleges, including many community colleges. If you take an exam at another institution, your score report should be sent to NLU for awarding of transfer credit (score recipient #8340 for DANTES and #1310 for CLEP). Who qualifies to take exams at NLU? Undergraduate students or graduate students seeking undergraduate credit may register. NLU is an open CLEP testing center, while we are a closed DANTES testing center, requiring that students be admitted to the university. What do DANTES tests cover and how much time is needed to complete a test? DANTES tests measure learning in some Business and academic areas, including Humanities, Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Technical Writing. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. If you attain the minimum acceptable score for a DANTES test, you will earn 5 quarter hours of credit. See page 3 for a complete listing of tests. Students have two hours to complete the exam. What do CLEP tests cover? CLEP tests measure knowledge of academic topics through five subject areas (Composition and Literature, Foreign Languages, History and Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics, Business). CLEP tests are timed, but there is no penalty for wrong or skipped answers. Credit awards vary from 5 QH to 18 QH. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES: 1. Always check with your Academic Advisor to avoid course overlap or duplication and to assure test credits will apply to your program. If you are an undergraduate student contact the Undergraduate Academic Advising Center at 1-800-443-5522 ext. 5900. MAT and all graduate students must also contact their Graduate Academic Advisor at the same number. 2. Complete the registration form included in this packet. Students may take one exam per test date. 3. Indicate both a first and second choice test date and time. See page 4 for a schedule of test dates. 4. Reservations cannot be held without receipt of the registration form. 5. Following the completion of the exam, an administrative fee of $25 will be billed to your student account. 6. The day of the exam, the $85.00 internet testing fee is paid by credit card only at the workstation at the time of testing. DSST does not accept Discover Card. 7. Send your registration form to: National Louis University Prior Learning Assessment/DANTES 850 Warrenville Road Lisle, IL 60532-1356 Or FAX: 630-874-4319 Or EMAIL: tracy.costello@nl.edu 1

Registration is limited, so please register early! If your 1 st choice test date is unavailable, you will be assigned your 2 nd choice date. Registration confirmation will be sent to the email address you provide on your registration form. Where can I get materials to study for these tests? Fact Sheets for DANTES tests include an outline of test content, sample questions, and a list of reference books. They are available on the DANTES web site at www.getcollegecredit.com. Click on Test Preparation, then Exam Fact Sheet, then the test title you are interested in for further information. In addition, practice exams can be purchased for a fee at: http://ibt.prometric.com/dsst. Study Guides for CLEP tests can be found in the following books: The Official Handbook for the CLEP Examinations and the College Board Guide to the CLEP Examinations. Check your local NLU library, public library or bookstore. Additional information may be obtained from the College Board web site at www.collegeboard.com (click on Taking the Tests, CLEP ). PROCEDURES FOR THE TEST DATE Arrive at the testing site ten minutes before start of exam. Students arriving late will not be allowed to sit for exams. Bring test confirmation, photo identification. Instructions and testing time take approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours. Students may take only one exam per testing session. When will I receive my test results? Students receive a score report directly after completing the exam. The NLU Registrar receives an official copy of your score report. Prior Learning Assessment does not receive or interpret test results. Please contact your Academic Advisor for score information and credit award confirmation. No-pass results: Students must wait 30 days from the original test date to retake the same DANTES exam. Cancellation of test date Prior Learning Assessment reserves the right to cancel tests. Every effort will be made to give 48-hour notice in the event of cancellation. RESCHEDULING / CANCELLING TESTS When you miss a exam session, you prevent another student from taking an exam on that date. If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, you must notify Prior Learning Assessment prior to the examination date; call 630-874-4316. 2
