The course covers concepts of electric charges and forces, electric field and potential, electric circuits, magnetic field and electromagnetic induction, and electromagnetic field and waves.. This course is required for most science and engineering majors. To develop students problem solving skills in a systematic manner, while providing a balance of quantitative reasoning and conceptual understanding. Upon the completion of this course, students should be able to 1) evaluate electrostatic forces in a system of multiple point charges or continuous charge distributions; 2) evaluate electric field due to a system of multiple point charges or continuous charge distributions; 3) calculate electric flux and apply Gauss law; 4) calculate conductivity, charge and current densities in conductors; 5) apply Kirchhoff s and Ohm s laws in circuit analysis; 6) evaluate capacitance for various geometries; 6) apply Ampere s and Biot-Savart s laws to evaluate magnetic forces and magnetic field due to a system of moving charges and current paths; 7) calculate magnetic flux and apply Faraday s and Lenz s laws to current loops; 8) conduct steady-state and transient circuit analysis involving combinations of inductors, capacitors and resistors; and 9) solve problems involving motion of charged particles in electric and magnetic fields. Students have the responsibility for first exposure to the material through online activities and assessments that will have to be completed prior to each class. Class time is used to summarize content and deal with misconceptions, subtleties, connections and applications. Students are required to complete weekly online quizzes having studied the assigned online activities. All students will also be required to meet in smaller groups for recitation sections during which problem solving strategies will be reinforced. Full details of problem solving session arrangements will be given by your instructor in the first week of the semester. All homework is done online using Mastering Physics, and counts up to 10% toward student s final grade. Online quizzes are graded and count 10% toward students final grade. All students use Mastering Physics to answer online quiz questions. Completing Practice Problems counts 10% toward students final grade. These assignments are administered online on Mastering Physics. Weekly Tests count 30% toward students final grade for sections. All students complete Weekly Tests on Expert TA. Topical Tests count 10% toward students final grade. These tests are administered online on Expert TA. - 1 -

There is one Final Exam, which is comprehensive and is worth 30% of the final grade. Final Exam is on Saturday, December 7th, 2013, from 8:00 AM 10:30 AM. Location TBD. Every student is obligated to take the Final Exam on the scheduled date and time as indicated above. NO EXCEPTIONS! Missing the final exam will result in a grade of F. The Final Exam is scheduled by the university, and its time and place can not be changed. Learning: Study Groups Students are encouraged to work together on homework. Working as part of a study groups is one of the most effective learning tools available to students. Attending Supplementary Instructional Sessions (SIS) is highly recommended. Students are encouraged to try these practice exams. These practice problems are meant to act as means of self-assessment, and their scores will not affect the final grade. Math Skills An operational knowledge of basic college algebra, trigonometry and calculus (differentiation and integration) skills are essential for your success in science and engineering courses. The online lectures cover the corresponding sections of the text and the solved examples listed in the course schedule. It is important to study and understand the step by step solution of online examples in order to be able to solve the test questions on Expert TA. One of the main advantages of this textbook is the large number of solved examples that cover all topics included in the course. Pay attention to these solved examples! - 2 -

Online Lecture Quizzes (submitted in Mastering Physics) There will be 16 online lecture quizzes. Study the corresponding sections in the book, review the recommended solved examples in your textbook, and view any online lecture notes posted before answering each quiz. You have only two submissions in each question to discourage guesswork. Due dates All online lecture quizzes are due every Monday at 11:00 am. In-Class Meetings: Students will come to class 2 times every week: one in-class Lecture Review Sessions and one Problem Solving Session. All Lecture Reviews will take place in Burson 121; Problem Solving Session locations differ for different sections - please consult Banner for exact meeting locations. INTERNET ONLY SECTION STUDENTS (SECTION 002) DO NOT HAVE IN-CLASS MEETINGS. Lecture Review Session time is used to summarize content, clarify concepts and deal with misconceptions, subtleties, connections and applications. Students are encouraged to participate in class by asking/answering questions and clarifying doubts. During Problem Solving Sessions, examples will be solved and problem solving strategies will be reinforced. Online Homework and Practice Problems: All Homework and Practice Problems will be posted on Mastering Physics weekly. Students are encouraged to attempt Practice Problems before attempting Homework problems. Online Weekly Tests and Topical Tests: There will be a test each week containing 4 questions on Expert TA. Weekly tests must be attempted between 9AM and 5PM every Friday. There will also be 3 Topical Tests throughout the semester. These tests will also be administered on Expert TA. There will be NO extension of deadline or make up on any Quiz, Homework, Practice Assignment, or Weekly Test. However, lowest 2 scores of each category will be dropped in consideration for the fact that it is inevitable that some students will miss completing certain assignments due to various personal reasons. Final Exam: FINAL EXAM is on Saturday, December 7 th, place and time: TBD. All students need to take the Final Exam to PASS the course.
