1 TAMIL NADU FISHERIES UNIVERSITY PROSPECTUS FOR POSTGRADUATE DEGREE COURSES 2014 INTRODUCTION Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU), the first of its kind in India, was established in 2012, with headquarters at Nagapattinam. The University is embarking on enhancing the availability of quality human resource at various levels including para professionals to meet the growing demand for trained and skilled human resources in fisheries. The TNFU continues to ensure quality commensurate with global standards in education, research and extension in fisheries science, which is reflected in the motto statement, Educate, Innovate, Elevate. TNFU has 3 constituent institutes: 1. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi 2. Institute of Fisheries Technology, Nagapattinam and 3. Institute of Fisheries Technology, Ponneri, Tiruvallur district The TNFU also has various Centres spread across the State to undertake fisheries research and extension activities. The University offers Ph.D. degree in 7 disciplines and Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc) degree in 10 disciplines in fisheries science. FISHERIES COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, THOOTHUKUDI The Fisheries College and Research Institute was started at Thoothukudi in 1977. Apart from B.F.Sc. (Bachelor of Fisheries Science), M.F.Sc. (Master of Fisheries Science) and Ph.D. degree courses in several disciplines, M.Phil. Course on Climate Change and Fisheries is also offered in this college. DETAILS OF VARIOUS POSTGRADUATE DEGREE COURSES Details of the various postgraduate degree courses at Master s and Doctoral level in the faculties of fisheries science in the University and the number of seats available in each discipline under M.F.Sc. I. M.F.Sc. DEGREE COURSES A) Eligibility criteria Candidates possessing B.F.Sc degree of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereof shall be eligible to apply. Only 75% of the admission strength for the year 201415 is available for the candidates from Tamil Nadu. The remaining 25% is reserved for candidates from other states through ICAR. If there are any unfilled seats in State quota, the same will be filled with candidates from other States who have applied and appeared for the Entrance Examination conducted by the University. The candidates from other States will be considered for admission by maintaining a separate rank list only against the vacancies that may arise from the state quota. If there are any unfilled seats under other States and Union Territories quota, the same will be filled with the candidates of Tamil Nadu State. Candidates from other States cannot claim admission in the quota reserved for Tamil Nadu State candidates as a matter of right on the basis of merit. Candidates who are seeking admission under Tamil Nadu State quota to the M.F.Sc. degree courses, excepting those who have undergone Undergraduate degree course (B.F.Sc.) in Tamil Nadu on selection from Tamil Nadu State quota should furnish a Nativity Certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format. Candidates with an OGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 under trimester system or 6.5 out of 10.0 or 65% aggregate under semester pattern alone are eligible to apply for admission to M.F.Sc. degree course. For SC / ST candidates, a minimum pass is sufficient. A candidate can apply only for two disciplines of his / her choice in M.F.Sc. degree course. Choice once exercised cannot be changed. Candidates who had registered for M.F.Sc. degree courses and discontinued without prior permission of the University are not eligible to seek readmission. B) Mode of selection Selection of candidates for admission to M.F.Sc. degree course shall be done on the basis of marks obtained by them. The distribution of marks is furnished below:

In case of equal total marks, ranking will be done in the merit list based on the marks secured in the Entrance Examination alone. In case of further tie, the date of birth of candidates will be considered and older candidate shall be placed before the younger candidate. Eligible candidates will be called for Counselling as per the merit list. Candidates securing less than % of total marks shall not be called for Counselling. SC / ST candidates securing less than 40% of total marks shall not be called for Counselling. All candidates should score a minimum of % in entrance examination. C) Entrance examination The standard of entrance examination for M.F.Sc. admission will be at undergraduate level and will contain 80 objective type questions with four responses, of which ten questions will be in General Knowledge and the rest in the particular discipline. Each question will carry 0.5 mark and the maximum marks will be 40. The examination will be of one hour duration. Candidates who applied for two disciplines should write the examination for both disciplines, one for each discipline chosen by him/her. Such candidates will write the examinations continuously for two hours. The examinations will be conducted at the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi. Disciplinewise merit list will be posted at the university website. When a candidate has not been selected for one discipline he/she will be considered for the other discipline he/she had applied for. If such a person has not been selected in both the disciplines he/she had chosen, then he/she may be kept in waitlist. If any vacancy arises later in the discipline concerned, the waitlisted candidates will be considered. The entrance examination hall ticket and counselling information letter will be sent only to the eligible candidates through email. All correspondence will be through email only. Information will be posted in the websites www.tnfu.org.in Admission to entrance examination does not confer on the candidate the right of admission to the course. Candidates appearing for the entrance examination will have to come to the examination centre on their own expense and make their own arrangement for stay. Request for change in the date / time will not be considered.

Candidates coming 30 minutes after the commencement of the entrance examination and also not possessing the hall ticket will not be permitted to appear for the entrance examination. No candidate shall be allowed to leave the examination hall before 30 minutes of closure of the entrance examination. Once a candidate leaves the hall, he/she will not be permitted to enter the examination hall again. D) Counselling procedure Eligible candidates will be called for counselling as per their rank. Selected candidates can choose any one of the disciplines of their choice available at the time of counselling. Alternatively, they can opt to remain in the waiting list. If a candidate desires to be in the waiting list, he / she will not be given any firm seat in other disciplines. The waiting list will be filled by second counselling based on merit. II) Ph.D. DEGREE COURSE IN FISHERIES SCIENCE A) Eligibility criteria Only 75% of the admission strength for the year is available for the candidates from Tamil Nadu. The remaining 25% is reserved for candidates from other States and Union Territories. If there are any unfilled seats under Tamil Nadu State quota, the same will be filled with candidates of other States and Union territories by maintaining a separate merit list. If there are any unfilled seats under other States and Union Territories quota, the same will be filled with the candidates of Tamil Nadu State. The candidates qualified for Senior Research Fellowship of ICAR are exempted from appearing for entrance examination. They will be given admission to Ph.D. in their discipline on priority basis subject to availability of seats. In case the no. of such applicants is more than the available / allotted seats, their OGPA will be considered as the deciding criterion. Candidates who are seeking admission under Tamil Nadu State quota to the Ph.D. degree course in Fisheries Sciences, except those who have undergone undergraduate degree course (B.F.Sc. in Tamil Nadu on selection from Tamil Nadu State quota) should furnish a Nativity Certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format in the application form. Candidates with an OGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 under trimester system or 6.5 out of 10.0 under semester system or 65% aggregate in the Master s degree alone are eligible to apply for admission to Ph.D. degree course in Fisheries Science. For SC / ST candidates, a minimum pass is sufficient. Candidates who have graduated at Masters level in one discipline cannot seek admission in another discipline. Candidates with M.F.Sc degree in the concerned field of specialization from a recognised University shall alone be eligible to apply. However, the eligible qualification for admission to Ph.D. degree in Fish Quality Assurance and Management is as follows: 4

5 Postgraduate degree in Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc.) with specialization in Fish Quality Assurance and Management or Fish Processing Technology or Industrial Fish Processing Technology or Postharvest Technology or Fishery Microbiology from any recognized State Fisheries/ Agricultural/ Veterinary Universities. Candidates who had registered for Ph.D. degree courses and discontinued without prior permission of the University are not eligible to seek readmission. C) Entrance examination Entrance Examination will be conducted in the concerned subject studied at Master degree level. The candidates qualified for Senior Research Fellowship of ICAR are exempted from appearing for entrance examination. The Examination will be with 80 objective type questions with four responses and each question will carry 0.5 marks with a maximum of 40 marks. The Examination will be conducted at the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi for a duration of 1 hour. SYSTEM OF EDUCATION Semester course credit system is followed. An enrolled student should complete the course and research credits prescribed from time to time and shall have to earn a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.5 out of 10.0 in order to earn a Post Graduate (M.F.Sc. / Ph.D.) degree. SCHOLARSHIPS For deserving Masters / Doctoral degree students, the following scholarships are available.

7 III) M.Phil. (Climate Change and Fisheries) under selffinancing mode Background of the course Climate is the result of exchange of heat and mass between the land, ocean atmosphere, Polar Regions and space. A major component of the global climate system is the oceans covering roughly 72% of the planet s surface. The ocean plays a critical role in our climate system and is significantly impacted by climate change and ocean acidification. People around the globe are already observing key alterations to their environment with profound consequences: sealevel rise, increased intensity of storms, changes in ocean productivity and resource availability, disruption of seasonal weather patterns, loss of sea ice, altered freshwater supply and quality. These changes are happening at an unprecedented rate. Issues of food security and human health will affect local livelihoods as well as global economies. A. Eligibility criteria Any Master degree with Science background with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate for general category and a minimum of pass for SC / ST candidates. B. Number of seats: FOUR C. Entrance examination The entrance examination will be with 75 objective type questions with four responses for one hour duration and will be conducted at the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi. E) Counselling procedure Admission to M.Phil.(Climate Change and Fisheries) course shall be made by Counselling on the basis of total marks duly applying the rule of reservation. Candidates securing less than 40% of total marks shall not be called for Counselling. SC/ST candidates securing less than 35% of total marks shall not be called for Counselling F) System of education The duration of course is one year comprising two semesters. The pattern of instruction and evaluation is the semester course credit system. An enrolled student should complete the course work, seminar and dissertation credits prescribed from time to time, carry out research project in the area of Climate change and fisheries and submit a project report for evaluation before the end of the second semester. To earn the M.Phil. degree in Climate change and fisheries, a student shall have to secure a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.5 out of 10.0. Rules of reservation are applicable only when there are four or more seats in each discipline. If the number of seats is less than four, selection will be based on merit alone. 8

9 HOSTEL FACILITIES a) Hostel for the students is available in the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi and the messes are run on a dividing system. b) The students will be accommodated in the hostels to the extent possible, as the facilities available are limited. c) A sum of Rs.5,000/ will be collected as hostel deposit. IMPORTANT NOTE A candidate who has been selected for admission to M.F.Sc./ M.Phil. / Ph.D., courses should register for the course concerned within 13 working days from the date of commencement of registration (the first two working days without fine and the remaining eleven working days with a fine of Rs.100/) as per the provisions made in the Regulations for the Postgraduate degree course under semester pattern. If he/she does not register for the course within the above period, his/her admission will automatically stand cancelled. A candidate who has paid the fees but fails to register on the date specified or fails to inform his/her intention of not registering for the course, within one week from the date specified for registration, is liable to forfeit the fees paid by him/her. A candidate, who informs his/her intention to withdraw from the course before registration is entitled to get a refund of 80% of the tuition fees and 100% of all the other fees paid by him/her, provided the claim for refund is made within one month from the date notified for registration / commencement of classes. Otherwise, he/she is liable to forfeit the full fees paid for the admission. A student who desires to leave the course after registering the course irrespective of the fact that he/she has attended the classes or not, is entitled to get a refund of 30% of the tuition fees and % of all the other fees. PREVENTION OF RAGGING If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority, the student concerned shall be given a chance to explain and if his / her explanation is found not satisfactory, the authority would expel him / her from the Institution. INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES 1. Candidates are requested to read the prospectus carefully before filling up the online application form. 2. A candidate can apply only for two disciplines of his / her choice in M.F.Sc. degree course. Choice once exercised cannot be changed. 3. Prospectus and Hall ticket can be downloaded from the University Website www.tnfu.org.in 4. Candidates possessing the minimum qualifications as prescribed in the prospectus alone will be considered. 5. No addition, deletion or alteration of any particulars relating to the application is permitted after the submission of online application. 6. Recent passport size photograph should be uploaded in the space provided in the online application form. The photo file size should not exceed kb.similarly, the

digital form of signature of the applicant should be uploaded in the application form and the file size should not exceed 20kb. 7. Those who are claiming community reservation should furnish the certificate obtained from the competent authority. However, the employees of Tamil Fisheries University and Government of Tamil Nadu can enclose attested copy of first page of their Service Register in proof of community claim. 8. At present, online payment of registration fee is not available. Hence, candidates are requested to pay the Registration fee as Demand Draft (Rs. 0 for SC/ST candidates and Rs. 1000 for others for each discipline) drawn in favour of The Finance Officer, TNFU, Nagapattinam (payable at Nagapattinam) from any nationalised bank. Candidates applying for two disciplines in M.F.Sc should pay the registration fee for both as applicable (Rs.0 for OC/BC Category and Rs.1000 for SC Category) 9. Employees of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University / State or Central Government or other organizations must produce a certificate from the concerned authorities permitting him/her to do M.F.Sc. / M.Phil / Ph.D., degree course in Tamil Nadu Fisheries University under part / full time basis at the time of counselling. Fail to produce the certificate, the candidate will not be eligible / admitted for counselling. 10. Selected candidates should join the course on or before the specified date, failing which their names will be deleted and resultant vacancies will be filled up by other eligible wait listed candidates through Counselling. 11. Printed copy of the hall ticket along with one set of attested copies of all original certificates pertaining to academics / sports / co curricular activities need to be submitted at the time of entrance examination. 12. Printed copy of the online application with passport size photograph should be brought by the candidate for counselling with all the following originals certificates / documents. a. Nativity Certificate in the prescribed format (if applicable). b. S.S.L.C. / H.S.C. mark sheet or First page of Service Register in proof of date of birth. c. Community Certificate. Employees of TNFU and Government of Tamil Nadu can enclose attested copy of the first page of the Service Register in proof of community to which they belong. d. Provisional / Degree Certificate of Bachelor s / Master s Degree. e. Statement of Marks / Report cards / Transcript card showing the details of courses underwent and the marks/ogpa obtained in the degree course concerned. f. Conduct certificate from the Head of the Institution last studied. g. Service Certificate showing the details of service / experience. h. Three copies of recent passport size photograph i. Copies of research article, popular article, book, manual, booklet published, proof for medals / awards, etc.,. j. Any other relevant certificate 10
