ST. FRANCIS XAVIER C.W.L. GENERAL MEETING April 11, 2017 The April meeting was held in the St. Francis Xavier Small Hall with Father Brennan and 16 members present. President Joan Lemay welcomed all and in Carol Sulpher s absence led us in The League Prayer Motioned by Martha Scott, seconded by Lore Coyne, to accept the agenda. All in favour. GUEST SPEAKERS: ST. JOSEPH S HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Margaret Maloney introduced the students and staff from St. Joseph s High School.The students spoke about their pilgrimage to the Dominican Republic in February. Eaine Turner thanked the students. 50/50 DRAW The 50/50 draw of $19.00 was won by Elaine Turner. Following snacks provided by Rita Mears and Susan Ringrose, the business meeting resumed. MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING Motioned by Jean Spilchen, seconded by Rita Mears, to accept the minutes of the March 14, 2017 meeting. All in favour. TREASURER S REPORT Jane Valliquette In Jane s absence President Joan presented Jane s report. The opening balance on March 1, 2017 was $20,604.09 and the closing balance on March 31, 2017 was $20, 427.86 which included a bank balance of $14,975.96 and 2 GIC s valued at $3,351.90 and $2100.00 respectively. SPIRITUAL ADVISOR FATHER BRENNAN Father Brennan read an excerpt from Pope Francis on Wednesday of Holy Week. Father urged us to keep a prayerful spirit during Holy Week. PRESIDENT S REPORT JOAN LEMAY April and early May are busy in our council with the Service Pin Presentation at the Our Lady of Good Counsel celebration on April 23 rd, our Rummage Sale on April 28 th & 29 th, the Hour of Prayer for Palliative Care on May 4 th and First Communion Luncheon on May 7 th. Thank you to all the members who do so much for the CWL. Tonight we need to decide on our June closing dinner location so that reservations can be made. It has been suggested that we book the Rebeccah Lodge Women again since their prices are reasonable and the food is good. Quilts for Hospice: Members who sew and make quilts are encouraged to take the patterns and make a few block. We will set a date after the May meeting to have a bee in the hall to finish quilt tops and prepare the quilts. Any member who does not sew or quilt but wants to help out is encouraged to attend. We hope to make 2 quilts this year. Please use only100% Cotton for your blocks. We will celebrate a few milestones in the coming years such as Canada's 150 th Anniversary in 2017; CWL National's 100 th Anniversary in 2020 and St. Francis Xavier CWL s 100 th Anniversary in 2021. Members are asked to give some thought to a project to mark these occasions, eg. that SFX CWL finance the replacement of the front doors of the church. The property and finance committee is working on cost estimates, Depending on the cost we may take a few years to pay for it. Perhaps the notice of bequest that we received in our correspondence will give us a good start on the funding. There will be more discussion on this topic at our May meeting. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS Spiritual Development Carol Sulpher No report. Organization Debbie MacDonald We have 142 new and renewed members;
We lost one member celebrating 5 years, Linda Lee, who had been in The Grove Nursing Home in Arnprior. Debbie also gave an update on plans for our April 23 rd Our Lady of Good Counsel celebration. Invitations have been sent out and she is already receiving responses. She has also sent out invitations to the Funeral Team Leaders and their workers. Communications Rita Mears The advertising for the Rummage Sale is out, and Rita is now working on getting out information for the 12 Hours for Palliative Care. Education and Health Susan Ringrose/Martha Scott Education Week is April 30 th May 3 rd. The theme for this year is Walking Forward together with God, Our Families, Others, Creation and in Hope. St. Thomas Apostle School students are invited to submit posters while the St. Joseph s High School Students are asked to submit artwork or a poem illustrating their theme. Contest letters were sent the week of March 27 th and entries are due by 3 p.m. Friday, April 21 st. Both Connie Dick, principal at St. Thomas and Jason Dedo, Chaplain and Religious Education Teacher at St. Joseph s High School support this project. Winning entries will be put on the bulletin boards in the church. Rosaries, cases and the pamphlet How to Say the Rosary are ready for First Communion on May 7 th. There has been no response from St. Joseph s High School or RCI regarding the graduation awards. Christian Family Life Cecilia Kusluski There were 4 adults received into the faith at the Easter Vigil Service. Please keep them in your prayers. Parish Activities Margaret Maloney Margaret thanked those who supported the Last Friday Coffee Parties in January, February and March. The April Coffee Party is cancelled because of the Rummage Sale. Margaret also thanked Joan Lemay and Jennifer Cuff who will be hosting the reception for the candidates after the Easter Vigil. The First Communion Luncheon will be held on May 7 th. Special thanks to Lore Coyne who will lead the kitchen. We are looking for volunteers to help Lore. Historian Elaine Turner We will honour the Funeral Luncheon Teams at our Our Lady of Good Counsel Celebration on April 23 rd. There will also be a report on our funeral luncheon ministry sent to the Diocesan Historian to be used at the Diocesan Convention, May 27 th. She also sent out get well cards to Shirley Ann Holly, Mary Richards and Sylvia Smith. Funeral Luncheons Lore Coyne Lore reported that there were 2 funeral luncheons in March. NEW BUSINESS Instructed Vote Regarding Diocesan Fees The proposed motion to discontinue the Diocesan Levy and fees and increase the Diocesan per capita fee paid to National from $1.50 to $3.50 was discussed, and an instructed vote taken. Fifteen in favour, 1 abstained. St. Francis Xavier voting delegate at the Diocesan Convention on May 27, 2017 will vote in favour of this motion. Delegates to the Diocesan Convention Our council has budgeted for 6 members to attend the 2017 Diocesan Convention on Saturday, May 27 th in Arnprior. Five members expressed interest in attending. There will be 1 voting delegate and 2 accredited delegates. Rummage Sale Elaine Turner Elaine thanked all the leaders and volunteer helpers. Debbie MacDonald has sent out information to all the leaders. A discussion followed on the method of payment options either pay all at the end or at each table. The majority preferred paying at each table. May 4 th Hour of Prayer for Palliative Care Our hour is 2pm to 3pm. The format will be the same as last year, with prayers and hymns. People of all faiths are invited to attend.
