AP / ECE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (ECE NRME 1000) Ms. Lacross Westhill High School Ag. Sci. Room 12 Course Materials: Textbook - Miller, G. Tyler. Living in the Environment 15 th Edition. Brooks-Cole Publishing, NY: 2007 Three Ring Binder this will include all notes, handouts, and graded assignments to be organized into sections with tabs or in chronological order. The way you organize your notebook is your choice. Loose-leaf paper or a notebook for note taking. Pen or pencil blue or black ink only. Course Overview: The goal of this Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems, both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. Environmental Science is interdisciplinary; it embraces a wide variety of topics from different areas of study (e.g. biology, chemistry, earth science, geography, history, art and math). Students taking this course should clearly understand that this course is designed to prepare students for the AP Environmental Science Exam. The date and cost for the AP Environmental Science Exam is TBA. Course Specific Learning Goals: The goal of this Environmental Science course is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them. Honesty: Each member of the class has a responsibility to help maintain the honesty and integrity of this community. I expect that each one of you will be honest. This means doing your own work during tests, quizzes, homework, labs and activities. If you are having difficulty with any aspect of your work, please talk to me. Representing someone else s work as your own is the highest form of personal dishonesty and the very least will result in a zero for the assignment. Assessments: Assessments may include: Tests Quizzes Activities Labs Projects Homework Classwork

Grading Policy: I grade using a points system for each category of assignments. Each assignment will be assigned a total number of points. Your grade will be determined by adding up the points earned and dividing by the total points offered in each of the following categories: Tests and Quizzes 40% Labs/Projects 30% Classwork 20% Homework 10% ** If you are taking this course for ECE credit you need to take the final exam even if you are a senior and have an A. ** Tests: (EXAMS 40% of your quarter grade): Announced unit exams covering several chapters will make up a large portion of your grade. They will include multiple choice and essay questions. Retaking tests will not be an option. If you cut class the day of an exam you will not be given the opportunity to make up the exam. If you miss class because it is the first period of the day and you sleep in or for any other unexcused absence, this counts as a cut and there is no opportunity to take the test (just like in college). Be sure you are here for the exams! Labs/ Projects: (30% of your quarter grade) All labs and projects are due at the beginning of the class period they are due. When conducting a lab you are expected to follow all lab safety rules. o There is absolutely no food or drink allowed. o Closed toed shoes MUST be worn for all labs. You are responsible for setting up and cleaning up your lab work area. There will be several labs conducted during the school year that you may work in a lab group to complete. Be sure to read over the procedure for the lab at least 2 times before you begin the lab. Use your class time wisely when working on a lab. If you miss a lab because of an excused absence you must make the lab up before or after school. Throughout the school year there will also be projects that will be assigned. Classwork: (20% of your quarter grade): All assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of the class period they are due. Place into the designated folder in the front of the room. Assignments will not be accepted late (not one day, one period or 5 minutes late). If a student cuts, they will receive a zero for any work done or due on that day. Any work not made-up due to excused or legal absence will become a zero if not made up within one day of the absence (or in a timely manner as discussed with me). You are expected to come after school to view any films you miss! Homework: (10% of your quarter grade): This course requires a large amount of time outside of class. It should be clearly understood that nightly study and preparation are necessary to achieve in AP/ECE Environmental Science. Homework is due at the beginning of class. Any work not made-up due to excused or legal absence will become a zero if not made up within one day of the absence (or in a timely manner as discussed with me). Extra Help: Extra help is always available. All you need to do is ask and we will figure out something. You can find me in Ag Rm 12 most of the school day or somewhere here in the Ag building. It is your responsibility to check my website for class information after class each day. Other: Tardy / Leaving Early: If you are tardy to class you MUST sign in without causing an interruption and place your pass in the basket provided. If you are leaving early for any reason you MUST sign out School policy states: o Three tardies to class will be recorded as one absence. o One 20-minute tardy will be recorded as one absence It is YOUR responsibility to get ANY and ALL work that was missed. Please see make up procedures below Absent Policy: School Policy States: o 3 tardies = 1 absence o 8 absences = F and possible appeal slip. o If a student cuts, they will receive a zero for any work done or due that day. o No appeals will be given for cuts!!! Make-up Procedure: All students should see me prior to a planned absence to determine make-up procedures If an unexpected illness occurs you must check the Absent Binder and your periods Absent Folder upon your return. In the absent binder you will find a daily list of work and in the absent folder assigned to your class period you will find the assignments you missed with your name on it. This is the student s responsibility! If there are ANY questions about make up work please come see me! Work should be made up in a timely fashion. If the student is absent for one day, they work should be completed within one day; two days, the work should be completed within two days, etc Attendance Policy 3 tardies = 1 absence 8 absences = F and possible appeal slip.
