INFORMATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL/ROP STAFF: HOW CAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RECEIVE COLLEGE CREDIT? MSJC provides the following method for high school students to receive credit towards transfer or graduation: High School/ROP Articulation Credit by Exam: Tech Prep Credit by Exam for High School Classes The Tech Prep program awards college credit to high school students who earn an A or B in career-related articulated high school courses. An articulated course is one in which the high school teacher and the Mt. San Jacinto College faculty have formally agreed that the high school course outline, syllabus, textbook, midterm, and/or final exam are comparable to those in a course of the same major at Mt. San Jacinto College and that the final exam score will be used as a credit-byexam for the comparable Mt. San Jacinto College course. (California Education Code 55753.5) Students who pass the approved credit exam with a 70 or above will earn credit for the course, indicated with a CR on their transcript. In some instances, faculty at MSJC have deemed the course eligible for a letter grade; in these courses, students who pass the approved credit exam with an 80 or above will earn the letter grade of A or B, depending on the faculty-determined grading scale, and a letter grade will be posted to their transcript. 30 Sept. 2013 Articulation Agreements: The process for establishing an articulation agreement for a high school or ROP course can be initiated by either the community college faculty in the appropriate discipline, or the staff of the high school or ROP course. However, the most productive method is for all parties to collaborate on the requests. The Career Education Special Programs office facilitates group meetings (Articulation and Training Days and mini-articulation workshops) regularly to bring high school/rop and college faculty together for the review of curriculum and development of articulation agreements. Upon completion of the appropriate forms the Career Education Special Programs office will coordinate the review and approval of the agreements. The Career Education Special Programs office will maintain all articulation agreements and distribute copies as needed. Note: MSJC utilizes CATEMA to manage high school articulation. Schools that articulate with MSJC will be required to use the system as well. Students will also need to have a CATEMA account to receive college credit and an MSJC ID is necessary for creation of that CATEMA account. The Career Education Special Programs office will be able to assist teachers and students with setting up their CATEMA accounts.

ADVISING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Mt. San Jacinto College awards college credit to high school students who successfully complete a career- related articulated high school course. High School articulation units will be awarded to the high school student s Mt. San Jacinto transcript within one semester after the high school student completes the course and credit- exam as long as the student meets the grade requirements and the necessary forms are completed and submitted to the Special Programs Office by the high school or ROP teacher. If the high school student has an A or B in the articulated course at the time the credit-exam is offered, they are eligible to take the exam. For most CTE Disciplines, the student will be eligible to receive a letter grade on their MSJC transcript. They must earn an A or B on the exam and that grade will be noted on the transcript. For some Disciplines, the student will be eligible for a Pass/No Pass. In these instances the students must score a 70% (C) or higher on the exam. A CR will be added to the student s transcript indicating credit has been earned. At the time a new agreement is created, the MSJC Department Chair/Faculty will indicate whether the course is grade eligible or CR eligible on Attachment D Credit by Exam criteria. Please note: As of July 2009, MSJC will not require articulation approved students to meet the 12-unit residency requirement prior to posting these units. In addition, the units will transfer to a four year college/university. An essential part of the articulation of high school/rop courses is the necessary advisement of students. Students need to know all of the following: 1. Only currently approved courses can be articulated for credit. 2. Approved high school/rop coursework must be completed with a B grade or better. 3. The student must complete a MSJC application in order to receive a student ID number. Students are not required to complete assessment or new student orientation for articulation purposes. http://www.msjc.edu/studentservices/enrollmentservices/pages/default.aspx 4. Articulated course credit must be requested by the high school/rop teacher or counselor in CATEMA before credit will be processed and awarded. TE: These rules cannot be waived or modified in any way. Students are encouraged to contact the Career Education Special Programs office if they need information regarding currently approved articulated courses. Mt. San Jacinto College has materials and brochures available to assist high school and ROP teachers and counselors with student advisement. The Special Programs office also has staff available to visit your school site to discuss articulation with your students or to conduct miniarticulation workshops for teachers, counselors and staff. Our staff can also assist teachers and students complete the MSJC student application. Contact our office to schedule an appointment or CTE Presentation. STUDENT PROCESS FOR RECEIVING ARTICULATED CREDIT

STUDENTS PROCESS FOR RECEIVINIG ARTICULATED CREDIT Process for Current High School/ROP Students 1. The student signs up for the approved articulated course at their high school. 2. The student must enroll at Mt. San Jacinto College utilizing the online application found at: http://www.msjc.edu/studentservices/enrollmentservices/pages/default.aspx 3. The student maintains and A or B in the course and takes the credit exam when offered. 4. High School Instructor creates a course in CATEMA web-based data management system. High School Instructor assists students in creating a student account in CATEMA. After the exam is graded, the instructor will indicate each student s grade in CATEMA. 5. The Career Education Special Programs Coordinator verifies the status of the articulation agreement, reviews grade information in CATEMA and submits a request to Enrollment Services so the appropriate credit can be posted to the student s transcript. An award letter is sent to the student. 6. Credit for articulated courses will be granted by the Dean of Enrollment Services, or designee after the request has been forwarded from the Career Education, Special Programs Office. 7. If the articulated course is a prerequisite to other courses, student may request the Coordinator provide verification to the Enrollment Services office for clearance. Please Note: Students who completed an articulated high school or ROP course prior to June 30, 2012, are no longer eligible to receive articulated credit. Students must have applied for credit within 3 years of completing the course or prior to June 30, 2015. COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL/ROP COURSE ARTICULATION PROCESS 1. Course content is reviewed; the Articulation Crosswalk (Attachment B) assists in comparing competency and skill requirement. This form will help you answer the question At the end of the course, students should be able to? The form is very useful to determine if high school/rop and college courses are well aligned. 2. MSJC faculty and high school/rop instructors meet to review and compare course outlines and competencies for both courses suggested for articulation. The Articulation Crosswalk will assist in developing the appropriate credit-exam approach for the course, a key to determining if both courses equally measure mastery of content. The goal is to determine if completion of the high school/rop course with a grade of B or better adequately measures mastery of course content. What competency methods will show student competency? 3. The Course Articulation Agreement form (Attachment C) and Course Articulation Credit By Exam Criteria (Attachment D) must be completed; both are mandatory. Attachment D will be completed by the MSJC Faculty. Completion of these forms will initiate the articulation process. Completed forms are submitted to the MSJC Career Education, Special Programs Office who will prepare drafts and distribute copies to MSJCCD Department Chair(s) and subject-area faculty for review. 4. Department Chairs and faculty will have 30 days to review the documents. After making any necessary revisions, final draft forms will be submitted by the Career Education, Special Programs Office to the appropriate Dean of Instruction for approval. 5. Proposals are brought to the Career Education Advisory Committee as information items. 6. Proposals are brought to the MSJCCD Curriculum Committee as information items. 7. Final forms, approved and signed by the Dean of Instruction, are submitted to the Vice President of Instruction, along with a prepared Course Articulation Agreement cover sheet (Attachment A) for review, approval and recommendation to the Office of the MSJCCD President for final signature. 8. Final executed copies go to the MSJCCD Office of Instruction (maintained in the Career Education Special Programs Office) and the MSJCCD Articulation Officer for maintenance in course files as well as distribution to department chairpersons and faculty. 9. In addition, copies will be forwarded to the originating school district or the Regional Occupational Program office, as applicable. 10. Requests for information or copies of existing articulation agreements should be directed to the special program office.
