Why study with Harley Reed? Harley Reed places students at the centre of all we do. We provide all our students with tailored course materials. Lectures and workshops are delivered by experienced, qualified, tutors with experience across the legal profession supported by a full-time team to guide and support our students. Unlike a university, as a private provider Harley Reed is able to be much more flexible in delivering the programme. This is demonstrated through our modular approach allowing for enrolments targeted at courses starting in September and February each year We believe our fees to be cost effective, whilst still offering a comprehensive learning programme and a first class experience. Harley Reed (UK) is a fully accredited CILEx Study centre also providing exam centre services 3

Introducing CILEx The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is the professional association for Chartered Legal Executives and other members of CILEx. CILEx works closely with Government and the Ministry of Justice and are recognised as one of the three core regulators of the legal profession. Since 1963 the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives has offered unparalleled access to a flexible career in law in the UK. It is a professional association representing around 20,000 members, of which 7,500 are qualified Chartered Legal Executive lawyers and 12,500 are practising paralegals and other legal practitioners. CILEx provides a cost-effective way of obtaining law qualifications and legal skills without having to complete a law degree (although graduates of law or non-law subjects can choose to become lawyers using the CILEx route). Entry is accessible to those holding a variety of qualification levels. The CILEx route is the ideal way to obtain a law qualification for school leavers, graduates, legal support staff, mature students and those wishing to expand their legal knowledge and skills. 4

About Chartered Legal Executive Lawyers Chartered Legal Executive lawyers may handle the legal aspects of a property transfer, be involved in actions in the High Court or County Courts, draft wills, draw up documents to assist in the formation of a company, advise spouses or civil partners with matrimonial or civil partnership issues or clients accused of serious or petty crime. Fellows can go on to become a partners in law firms or Chartered Legal Executive Advocates. Alternatively, a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer may be self-employed and provide legal services to solicitors and unregulated legal work to the public business. Chartered Legal Executive lawyers are fee earners. In private practice, their work is charged directly to clients making a direct contribution to the income of a law firm. This is possible after having achieved the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. This is an important difference between Chartered Legal Executive lawyers and legal support staff Fellows are eligible for judicial appointments for District Judges in civil and criminal courts and for Tribunal Chairman. Chartered Legal Executive lawyers have the option to become solicitors in one or two years after becoming Fellows and usually are exempt from the training contract graduates must complete to qualify as solicitors (although with the rights now afforded to CILEx Lawyers, this is becoming increasingly unnecessary Please refer to the CILEx website (www.cilex.org.uk) for more information about the institute 5

The Benefits of the CILEx Lawyer Route into Law For Students CILEx provides a range of entry routes, from people with GCSEs through to Law Degree holders making it the most accessible route to a career in law Individuals can become lawyers without the need for a training contract or to work in an approved training firm by doing work of a predominantly legal nature, supervised by a qualified legal practitioner CILEx qualifications can be completed parttime allowing you to earn whilst you learn and gain valuable practical experience whilst you complete your qualification Even for individuals with no legal knowledge and experience, completing all levels of the CILEx Lawyer qualification can be done in 3-4 years and costs less than 10,000 in total considerably less than a full-time degree course or GDL and LPC CILEx lawyers are able to become partners in law firms, set up their own practice, become judges, represent clients in court and become advocates For Employers CILEx students and members can be fee earners for whilst they progress through their legal studies Sponsoring students through CILEx is considerably less expensive than other routes to becoming a lawyer CILEx has a wide range of law and practice units suitable for all types of specialisms in the private, public and third sectors For support staff, or even qualified staff needing refreshing in a specific subject area, CILEx offers single unit certification Supporting staff through their CILEx qualification can result in individual and organisational growth supporting staff motivation, loyalty and performance Whilst students may join open courses, Harley Reed is also able to offer tailored programmes and timetables for corporate entities enrolling groups of staff 6

The CILEx Lawyer Qualification Structure The qualifications have a flexible, modular structure and allow learners to choose from a range of topics to study; individuals can even choose to gain certification in specific units Level 3: If you are working or are seeking employment in a paralegal role, or those occupations where knowledge of the law is required (e.g. law enforcement agencies, court services, customs, etc.), this may be the qualification for you. - Certificate in Law and Practice: This qualification recognises students who may need a short but rounded introduction to Law and Practice. Additionally, it may be suitable for individuals such as company secretaries, company directors and those looking to have a basic understanding of the law and its principles - Diploma in Law and Practice. This is the first academic stage in the process of becoming a chartered legal executive lawyer. It comprises 10 units from a suite of 19 available units across key areas of Law and Practice.. Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice: This is set and assessed at honours degree level. It is the second and final stage towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer. It comprises six(6) units. To start at this level, individuals must have a relevant law qualification or the Level 3 Diploma. Graduate Fast Track Diploma: This route is for law graduates who wish to complete the academic part of their Chartered Legal Executive qualification. An individual with a non-law degree may also use this route if they have also completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) - It provides direct entry at level 6 with students exempt from most units, requiring only 3 units to complete the course and become GCILEx - The GFTD is aimed at legal practice and the professional skills element of qualification.
