NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL OF INDIA UNIVERSITY Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru 560072 TWO DAY LAW TEACHERS INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR Critical Reflections on the Methodology of Teaching Law in India Sri.Krishnappa Memorial Hall, 1 st Floor, Academic Block, NLSIU at on 2 nd and 3 rd December, 2016 Time: 9.00 am Introduction: National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is one of the premier Law Universities in India, established in 1989 pursuant to the National Law School of India University Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986). For many years, NLSIU has been the proud host of many large-scale events, workshops, conferences and moot court competitions, attracting global participation. The Chief Justice of India is the Chancellor of the University. The Chairman, Bar Council of India, is the Chairman of the General Council. These connections lend a stature and prestige to the School which is unparalleled in the history of legal education in India. The Karnataka Act confers complete administrative and academic autonomy which facilitates innovation and experimentation in the pursuit of excellence in legal education. This Law School was established with a view to cater to the requirements of the legal profession, law teaching and research, and judiciary. Why the workshop? The contextual approach to teaching law presumes that the gap between legal theories, principles, their application and practice, is quite wide. Yet law surrounds everything of our daily lives of social, economic and political accounting. Can our law programme be systematically strengthened? Can our legal education not only be socially relevant, intellectually stimulating, professionally competent but also be practically significant? Can our legal education expand beyond merely imparting the knowledge of law and be able to motivate the concerned to develop analytical and practical skills of self-learning? Does legal education orient towards the crucial ingredient as to identifying legal issues and provide the necessary analysis? Can we impart the fact that a mere acquisition of legal vocabulary is insufficient to facilitate an understanding of legal materials? Is a law student s perception of presentation skill in effect very different than what is generally expected from the Bench and Business Manager s interpretation of the same? Is it relevant for legal education to move from teaching methods to teaching processeslike setting teaching goals, developing a methodology, evolving techniques to connect teaching and learning, and realisation that one method does not fit all subjects. Can teachers realise that students with speaking issues may have strong abilities to express in writing? Likewise, can they realise that a teaching style can only be developed based on a deeper understanding of the learning style of the students. That methodology accepts that diversity of laws and uncertainty in public policy may be legitimate. That legal education must encourage the need for diverse opinion and arguments advanced. Can we and should we have alternate methods?

Addressing these questions the workshop aims to look into 1. Teaching - learning techniques and processes in law schools 2. Avenues to expand legal education merely beyond imparting the knowledge of law 3. Ways to foster better use of legal resources for effective learning and refining professional skills 4. Moving from teaching methods to teaching processes- like setting teaching goals, developing a methodology, evolving techniques to connect teaching and learning 5. Developing effective mechanisms for legal writing, oral communication and argumentative skills among students and teachers Programme Schedule: The first part would focus on teaching techniques and methods. This would weigh the pros and cons of the traditional lecture method as opposed to the use of technology in classrooms and also the preliminaries of teaching. The second part would focus on specific areas of law highlighting the ways and means of tackling it highlighting innovative methods to make learning more interesting. The third part would include the evaluation and assessment criteria and models. This would also evaluate/make note of the theoretical understanding and the practical application. Who should attend? Law teachers, Professors of Law, Teaching Assistants, Research Associates, Institutional Administrators, researchers and stakeholders in legal education. Paper presentations: Those who are interested to contribute to the broad theme for the workshop may send their material/write up/article on the theme and title of the workshop.
