The children all seemed to have enjoyed their holidays and the extra day off last week. Many, many thanks to the families who represented Columba and other local community groups at both the Garfield and Bunyip ANZAC Day services. Every year there seems to be more and more people attending which is very gratifying for the RSL and makes me very proud of the Columba Community and the values of service and community responsibility demonstrated by our families. Last term finished on a high note for Columba with our Twilight School Day and I cannot thank you, our amazing parents, enough for your support and contribution to education at Columba. I know the Twilight School Day created some complications for families but it was pleasing to see so many parents participating in the open classroom and family activities. The children certainly loved having you all here to share in their learning. Hopefully you now have a greater understanding of the variety of learning experiences that the students at Columba receive and have been made aware of the importance of your role as the first educator of your child/children. On behalf of the staff, I thank you again for your participation, all their hard work and commitment to excellence in education was well rewarded by the enthusiastic response from families. By Jake Stewart Sports Leader ANZAC DAY Confirmation Please remember the following students in your prayers as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday. Shainia, Natalia, Angelina, Vanessa, Ethan, Will, Jake, Joseph, Xavier, Leon and David. Willow: Anzac Day Is About the remembrance of the people who tried to fight for us, the people who died for us and for the witty and wonderful. None of my relatives I know have fought in the war, but I can tell it would be emotional. I went to the dawn service and it was a very spiritual day. I could not see any of the speech or the wreath laying but I got a sneak peek of silence. I was there for the scouts I had to show off my uniform which means taking off my jumper I was FREEZING. Angelina: What Does It Mean Today? Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion of national remembrance. We remember the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in all wars. There is a dawn service and the soldiers march later in the day. We need to remember them because they served our country and made sure Australia is safe and free. Zali: Anzac Day Anzac day is one of Australia s most important days on our calendar. In 1916 it was officially named Anzac day. Still to this day Anzac day is on the 25 April. They named it Anzac day to stand for Australian New Zealand Army Corps. They landed in Gallipoli on the 25 April 1915 at dawn. The war was declared over on Nov 11 1918. Parent/Teacher Meetings The class teachers are very much looking forward to Parent/Teacher Meetings next week. A note will be sent home tomorrow confirming appointment times. Please contact the office if you do not receive the note tomorrow. This year we will not be sending students home early on Tuesday as we have done in previous years, but instead, will keep them at school and involved in alternate activities whilst teachers begin meetings. Dismissal time will be at 3:30 pm on Tuesday. Parents who are coming for an appointment before this time can, of course, take their child/children home after the appointment. Assembly The next Assembly is scheduled for Friday 9th May at 2:30 pm. The Prayer will be lead by students from Grade 3/4. Please come along and help celebrate the achievements of the students. All families are welcome to attend each Assembly. School Bank Congratulations to Natalia, Willow, Ethan and Leon who have been selected as school leaders for the next fortnight. I am sure they will set a great example for all our School leaders to follow. Thank you to Joseph, Angelina, Will and Jamieson who were outstanding as school leaders for the last fortnight. We are delighted to have a volunteer for the School Bank which will resume operation next Thursday 8th May. Promotional material about school banking is attached to the newsletter. BOOK FAIR We are creating our own Reading Oasis in the Learning Centre and it will be the coolest place to read hot books. We opened our Fair on Tuesday 29 th April and all classes had an opportunity to visit the Fair with their teachers. On May 6 th, coinciding with our Parent/Teacher interviews, the Book Fair will be open for the last time in 2014. Don t miss out. Come in before or after your interview time and see why it is the coolest place to read hot books. Open 1.30pm until 7.30pm close! Look out for the READING OASIS posters around the school for more information. We all enjoy our Book Fair and while it does raise money for our school with a percentage of the sales coming back to us, the chance to surround ourselves with books not normally found in our library is too good an opportunity to miss. If you are unable to visit the Fair during our opening times it is possible for your child to purchase something, provided one parent signs a note giving their permission. Just put the money in an envelope and write on the front that your child is able to spend a certain amount at the Fair. Denise Cook CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR BUNYIP ART SHOW PLACE GETTERS!
