Enrolled in English and Mathematics Classes at the University of Hawai i in Fall 2011 The focus of this analysis is the unduplicated headcount of Hawai i public high school graduates enrolled in remedial, developmental or college-level English and Mathematics courses at any of the ten campuses within the University of Hawai i (UH) System. Some students take more than one English class and more than one mathematics class, particularly at the remedial level. Hence, the headcount method counts each student only once and at the highest level enrolled course. This method is also a snapshot or point-in-time analysis for the Fall 2011 semester, and looks at a specific population of recent high school graduates those who enrolled at a UH campus the immediate Fall Semester following high school graduation (Class of 2011 graduates). The UH faculty makes a distinction between remedial and developmental coursework. Remedial coursework covers the basic foundational knowledge that underlies literacy and numeracy skills. coursework prepares students for college-level or credit bearing courses, generally towards their degree or certificate requirements. Across the UH System, college-level courses are generally numbered 100 or above. Courses that do not fit the remedial or developmental definition, but are numbered less than 100 may be used, in some instances, to fulfill degree or certificate requirements. For the purposes of this report, these courses are categorized as Other. English and mathematics are also considered gateway courses at the University of Hawai i, and is required by almost every degree and/or certificate the University offers. Gateway courses introduce students to the discipline of college, and at times, of a major. Many studies advocate the importance of students completing their gateway courses early in their college years. These studies suggest that students who enroll and complete their gateway courses immediately upon entering college are more likely to graduate and successfully earn their college degree than those who defer taking these courses. Of the 4,379 June 2011 Hawai i public high school graduates enrolled at the University of Hawai i in Fall 2011: (ENGLISH COURSES) 1,409 or 32.2% were enrolled in remedial or developmental English classes. Enrollments into remedial or developmental English classes show no additional improvement from Fall 2010. 2

Overall, the percentage of students that enrolled in remedial or developmental classes show a slight increase of 1.2% in remedial English over Fall 2010; with a slight decrease in enrollment into developmental courses (1.2%). o o Remedial English Fall 2010: 201 (or 14.6%) of 1,376 students enrolled in remedial Fall 2011: 222 (or 15.8%) of 1,409 students enrolled in remedial English Fall 2010: 1,175 (or 85.4%) of 1,376 students enrolled in developmental Fall 2011: 1,187 (or 84.2%) of 1,409 students enrolled in developmental 1,668 or 38.1% enrolled in college level (course numbers >=100) English courses. This is an improvement (2.4%) when comparing the high school graduates entering the previous Fall 2010 semester. 1,233 or 28.2% did not enrolled in English. It is undetermined in which category these students would have placed remedial, developmental, or College level (course numbers >=100). (MATHEMATICS COURSES) 1,561 or 35.6% of graduates were enrolled in a remedial or developmental Mathematics class, with no change over the Fall 2010 enrollments (35.8%). When comparing Fall 2010 to Fall 2011 remedial or developmental enrollments, there is an 8.7% increase in remedial course enrollment over developmental Mathematics coursework. o o Remedial Mathematics Fall 2010: 522 (or 34.4%) of 1,516 students enrolled in remedial Fall 2011: 673 (or 43.1%) of 1,561 students enrolled in remedial Mathematics Fall 2010: 994 (or 65.6%) of 1,516 students enrolled in developmental Fall 2011: 888 (or 56.9%) of 1,561 students enrolled in developmental 882 or 20.1% enrolled in college level Mathematics courses, which shows no increase over Fall 2010 (20.2%). 1,793 or 40.9% did not enroll in Mathematics, which is about the same percentage as the previous Fall semesters. It is unknown which category these students would have placed remedial, developmental, or College level (course numbers >=100). 3

Tables 2 and 5 show headcounts and percentages sorted alphabetically by Hawai i public high schools. These are horizontal percentages, which is calculated by dividing the high school s category headcount (i.e. remedial, development, enrolled, not enrolled) by the high school s total headcount of graduates. Tables 3 and 6 show headcounts and percentages of student course taking by the students home campus within the University of Hawai i system. These are also horizontal percentages, which is calculated by dividing the campus s category headcount (i.e. remedial, developmental, enrolled, and not enrolled) by the campus s total enrollment headcount. 4
