Choice is important All through our lives we are faced with choices and have to weigh up the costs and benefits of the options available to us. The good news is, that you have already made the smartest decision by selecting Buckswood for your education, because at Buckswood you can combine your studies with a wide variety of extra-curricular activities that will equip you with the skills, character and qualifications you need to succeed in life. Core subjects the foundations Everything in life needs a solid foundation on which to build and at Buckswood your academic studies have a core of subjects which give you a grounding in life s fundamentals but also serve as a platform to spring board into specialist areas of study later on in your academic career. Having a set of core subjects allows the Buckswood student to explore where their academic strengths lie, identify possible career paths which fit their aptitudes and work with the school to tailor their learning. Choice of courses GCSE A level and IB Some fashions come and go, and the same is true when it comes to areas of study. 2 Year GCSE Option Form 1. Core subjects taken by all English Language (First or Second Language) English Literature (Taken by most students studying First Language English) Combined Science (Double Award) 2. Option Choices please select three from the subjects listed below and one reserve choice French; Spanish; Mandarin; ESOL; ECDL (Computing); Religious Studies; History; Drama; Art and Design; Graphics; Media Studies; Geography; Physical Education; Triple Science; Study Skills and Business Studies Note: If English is tested as below a certain level for International Students, ESOL must be selected as 1 option; Students not taking ESOL must select at least 1 modern foreign language (French, Mandarin or Spanish) unless following consultation with parents/guardians this is not felt to be appropriate and Study Skills must be taken instead; When choosing option subjects, students must take into account their own academic strengths and weaknesses and also possible future career paths. It is expected that they will discuss possible choices with their teachers/house tutor/form tutor as well as their families. 3. Extra Subjects Students may also select extra subjects which will take place outside of the regular timetable either on Saturdays or during lesson 9 after prep in the evenings. These may incur an additional cost. Music; Latin and Own Language In addition to studying subjects at GCSE/IGCSE all students will have 2 lessons per week of sports instruction. Learning Support (Personal Educational Needs) is also available at an extra cost. Please read details about the different subjects in the GCSE information booklet before making your choices. It is occasionally not possible to satisfy preferences for particular combinations so please also provide a reserve choice that could be studied in place of one of the first three choices. 3. Core subjects will be timetabled as blocks so that students can be allocated to the sets appropriate to their abilities. 1 Year GCSE Option Form Courses are designed* to offer a combination of the following subjects: English Language and/or English as a Second Language Combined Science One or Two Humanities Subjects** Own Language*** Computing (ECDL) Art (non-gcse) Other foreign languages are available as extra-curricular electives * Dependent on requirement and language proficiency. ** Humanities subjects that may be offered include Geography, History, Business Studies and Global Perspectives. *** Where a GCSE examination is available.

All non-native speakers, must select EAP in Block 5. Non-native speakers should select at least 4 subjects (including EAP). Native speakers should select at least 3 subjects.

IB Diploma Option Form Students need to choose 3 subjects to do at a Higher level and 3 subjects at standard level. All subjects offered at HL unless specified as SL only. ab initio is beginners level.
