ADAM PYETT NEW PAINTINGS 1 19 AUGUST 2017 Despite working within the conventions of the still life genre based on the depiction of things Adam Pyett s paintings are not merely representations of assorted objects: they are things in the world in their own right. They are the means through which he tests the potential of the paint medium, his own abilities as an artist and the viewer s skills of perception. Each painting is an exercise with a defined goal: to make a two-dimensional image that is more satisfying than the original three-dimensional form on which it is based. The surfaces of Pyett s canvases rely on deft textural manipulations for their compelling visuality and tactility. Variegated passages of density and sparseness, scraped or rubbed back sections that reveal just a suggestion of colour test the material and its capacity, in the artist s hand, to model and propose form. This latest body of work continues Pyett s simultaneous observation of the structure and inherent symbolism of objects, and the material potential and beauty of paint.
