Financial Aid Don t miss out on this opportunity for tuition assistance. The application process is on the website click the Parents tab. Happy Valentine s Day! While the Church today celebrates the Feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, it was once the feast day of St. Valentine. It was likely that there were at least two St. Valentines, a Roman priest and a bishop in the early church, both of whom were martyred. Much of what we know about them is mostly legend, which is why the Church no longer honors St. Valentine on this day. Red, the liturgical color for martyrs, was used on St. Valentine s Day to represent blood spilled for the Faith. How these martyred saints came to be associated with romantic love is not entirely clear, but it may be related to customs associated with the Roman celebration of Lupercalia, a festival of purification and fertility, which fell in the middle of February. The sending of valentines (prayer cards) and gifts of candies and flowers is rooted Catholic practices of old, when Catholics honored a person on their saint s or name day.
