We believe SLC s afford more individual attention for students and make students more well-known by staff and fellow students in a more personal atmosphere. After a year in the Ninth Grade Success Academy, non-ell students select their SLC for their remaining three years. 2

ATTENDANCE If you move or change phone numbers, please contact the attendance office (Room 117) so that our records are kept up to date. Total absence over nine days in a school year is considered excessive and could lower your grade. Keep track of your absences from school using this handbook. Upon returning to school after an absence, you are required to bring a note signed by your parent or guardian explaining the reason for the absence and have it signed by your teachers. If you are absent for 3 or more consecutive days, a doctor s note is required. Extended vacations are not considered acceptable absences. Unexcused absence from any class is considered a cut. Cuts and lateness to school can adversely affect your grades and will be noted on your record. If you believe that your attendance record is incorrect, please have your parent or guardian call the cutting and lateness office at 718 595 8413 or the attendance office at 718 595 8414. Work missed because of absence or trips must be made up in a timely fashion. SCHOOL BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS No hats or do-rags Students should dress appropriately for school: no halter or backless tops, tank tops, midriff tops, short shorts and sagging pants. Use of cell phones, MP3 players and wireless earphones is permitted only in the student cafeteria. Unless explicit permission is given by your teacher, these items may not be used during class and are subject to confiscation. Students should always enter school through the cafeteria entrance on 50 th avenue I.D. and program cards must be carried by students when in the building Students are not allowed to eat and drink outside the cafeteria Students should not leave the building during the school day for any reason including during their lunch period Students in the hallways during class time should always have an official pass from the teacher Students should not loiter around the school before or after their school day Newtown is a drug-free and weapon-free zone, including box-cutters and screwdrivers 4

Membership in of the National Honor Society (Arista) is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors that have an average of 85% or above, have no failures on their transcript, and have performed at least one term of service for the school. SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND COURSE OFFERINGS ART INSTITUTE This program leads to the NYS Art Regents Exam and the creation of a multimedia portfolio suitable for college applications. Courses include: Drawing, Print-making, Graphic Design and Computer Art. BUSINESS INSTITUTE This program prepares students for entry into the work place or further business study at the college level. Most of our graduates are college-bound. Course include: Internet and Computers, MOS-Word and Power Point certification, Connect 2 College (dual enrollment), E-Commerce (Virtual Enterprise Classroom) and Web Page Design. There are opportunities for paid internships for qualified students - Work-based learning (Work Study). Tech Prep courses are available for ELL students and offer college credit through Queensborough Community College. PRE-ENGINEERING This program prepares students for Architecture, Engineering and Computer Technology related areas of study. Courses include: Drafting for Production, Principles of Engineering, Solid works, Architecture, Landscaping, A+ Certification (Computer repair) and Telecommunications (network cabling). There are opportunities for internships for qualified students. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES College credit is earned by scoring a 3 or higher on AP Exams given in May. Course offerings include: United States Government and Politics, Human Geography, United States History, World History, Studio Art, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology, English Language and Composition, Environmental Science, English Literature and Composition, Spanish Language and Culture, Spanish Literature and Culture, Chinese Language and Culture. COLLEGE NOW COURSES These courses, offered in conjunction with LaGuardia Community College, are available to qualified juniors and seniors who are interested in earning college credits while still at high school. Courses offered have included: Basic Writing, English 101, Reading the Biography, Literature and Propaganda, Critical Thinking, Math Concepts, College Algebra, Introduction to Business, Principles of Marketing, Drawing, Painting, Architecture, and Music. TECH PREP STUDIES These are dual enrollment courses taken for college credit that are offered in collaboration with Queensborough Community College. QUEENS COMMUNITY HOUSE Instruction offered in Business and Computers, Kickboxing and Music (Guitar). CREDIT RECOVERY AND INDEPENDENT STUDY These are credit accumulation opportunities are available with you counselor s permission.
