JOMO KENYATTA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY (JKUAT) POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES 2009/2010 SEPTEMBER INTAKE RE-ADVERTISEMENT Applications are invited from qualified candidates for the following postgraduate programmes for the 2009/2010 Academic Year due to start in September 2009. A. FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 1. M. Sc. in Food Science and Technology in the following areas:- i) Food Chemistry ii) Food Microbiology iii) Food iv) Postharvest Physiology and Pathology Candidates for the Master of Science degree in Food Science and Technology must have, at least 2 nd Class Honors (Upper Division) degree in Food Science and (Postharvest) Technology or Food Science and Nutrition or its equivalent from a university recognized by the University Senate. Candidates who have, at least, a 2 nd Class Honors (Upper Division) degree, or its equivalent in Agricultural Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Microbiology from a university recognized by the University Senate, shall also be considered for admission. A holder of a 2 nd Class Honors (Lower Division) in the relevant fields of study indicated above shall be considered, provided that the candidate has at least two years relevant work since graduation. 2. Ph.D. in Food Science Candidates for PhD degree in Food Science must have a Master of Science degree in any of the following disciplines: Food Science and (Post-harvest) Technology, Food Science and Nutrition, Applied Human Nutrition, Biochemistry, Chemistry and Process from universities recognized by the University Senate. Candidates of any other academic qualification(s) acceptable by JKUAT Senate as equivalent to the above. DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE 1. M.Sc. Horticulture Applicants should have a minimum of BSc. 2 nd Class Honours (Upper division) degree in Horticulture or related fields such as Agriculture and Botany from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. 2 M.Sc. Landscape, Planning & Conservation A holder of a 2 nd Class Honors (Lower Division) in the relevant fields of study indicated above shall be considered, provided that the candidate has at least two years relevant work since graduation. Applicants should have a minimum of B.Sc. 2 nd class honours (Upper division) degree in the areas of Horticulture, Ornamental Science/Landscaping, Environmental, Landscape Architecture or any other related life and social science from an institution recognized by JKUAT Senate. A holder of a 2 nd Class Honors (Lower Division) in the relevant fields of study indicated above shall be considered, provided that the candidate has at least two years relevant work since graduation. 1

3. M.Sc. Research Methodology Applicants for Master of Science in Research Methodology should be either; A holder of at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Agricultural, Biological, Social Sciences and Statistics/Mathematics from JKUAT or any other university recognized by the University Senate. A holder of a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree in the disciplines in (a) above and related field of study from JKUAT or any other institution shall be considered provided that the candidate can produce evidence of ability to conduct research. A holder of other qualifications recognized by JKUAT Senate as being equivalent to (a) and (b) above. 4. Ph.D. Horticulture Applicants should have a minimum of MSc. degree in any of the following disciplines: Horticulture, Ornamental and Landscaping Sciences, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Soil Science or other related sciences from institutions recognized by JKUAT Senate. 5. Ph.D. Landscape, Planning & Conservation B. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Applicants should have a minimum of M.Sc. degree in the areas of Horticulture, Ornamental Science/Landscaping, Environmental, Landscape Architecture or any other related life and social science from an institution recognized by JKUAT Senate. DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING 1. The following M.Sc. programmes are offered:- i) MSc. Mechanical with the following options:- Thermo-Fluids Design & Production Industrial ii) MSc. Sustainable Energy A holder of at least B.Sc. 2 nd Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in a relevant area from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree of at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division), in a related field which is recognized by the University Senate as an adequate pre-requisite for the M.Sc. in. A holder of 2 nd class Honours (Lower Division), B.Sc. degree from JKUAT or any other institution which is recognized by the University Senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the Bachelors degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant field. DEPARTMENT OF MECHATRONIC ENGINEERING 1. M.Sc. Mechatronic A holder of at least second class honours, upper division, Bachelor of Science degree in Mechatronic, Mechanical or Electrical and Electronic of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree of at least second class honours, upper division, in a field which is recognized by the University Senate as an adequate prerequisite for the Master of Science degree in Mechatronic. A holder of a Bachelor of Science degree of at least second class honours, lower division, in Mechatronic, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic, or in a field which is recognized by the University Senate as an adequate prerequisite for the Master of Science degree in Mechatronic, provided that the candidate has at least 2 years relevant industrial. 2

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING 1. i) M.Sc. in Electrical/Electronic in the following options: - Control - Power Electronics - Power systems. ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical in the following options: - Control - Power Electronics - Power systems. A holder of at least 2 nd Class Honours (Upper division), B.Sc. degree in in a relevant from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division), B.Sc. degree from JKUAT or any other institution which is recognized by the University Senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the Bachelors degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant field DEPARTMENT OF TELECOMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION ENGINEERING 1. M.Sc. in Telecommunication A holder of at least 2 nd Class Honours (Upper division), B.Sc. degree in a relevant from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division), B.Sc. degree from JKUAT or any other institution which is recognized by the University Senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the Bachelors degree or a Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant field 2. Postgraduate Diploma in Telecommunication 3. Ph.D. Telecommunication A holder of at least 2 nd Class Honours (Upper division), B.Sc. degree in a relevant from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division), B.Sc. degree from JKUAT or any other institution which is recognized by the University Senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the Bachelors degree. Holders of a Masters degree in a relevant discipline recognized by the University Senate. DEPARTMENT OF GEOMATIC ENGINEERING AND GEOSPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GEGIS) 1. M.Sc. programmes in the following areas:- i) M.Sc. in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) & Remote Sensing ii) M.Sc. in Environmental Information Systems A holder of a 2 nd class honours (upper division) B.Sc. degree in a relevant area from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of a 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division), B.Sc degree from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the B.Sc. degree. iii) Postgraduate Diploma in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Information Systems 3

2. Ph.D. in the following areas. GIS. Remote Sensing. Geo-informatics. Geodesy and Photogrammetry Applicant should be a holder of a Master s degree in a relevant discipline recognized by JKUAT Senate and must have a research proposal. DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING 1. M.Sc. in Civil in the following options: - Global Environment and ASAL - Water - Transportation - Structural A holder of at least 2 nd class honours (Upper Division), B.Sc. degree in the relevant field from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University senate. A. holder of at least 2 nd class honours (Upper Division) Bachelor of Science degree from other institutions recognized by the University senate in a discipline closely related to the selected Master of Science option who has in addition to relevant practical. A holder of 2 nd class honours (Lower Division), B.Sc. degree in Civil from JKUAT or any other institution, which is recognized by the university senate as being of equivalent academic status and who in addition must show proof of either two years and professional development or academic advancement through research and publication since graduation with the bachelors degree or a postgraduate Diploma in the relevant field. 2. Ph.D. in Civil in the following areas:- - Global Environment and ASAL - Water - Transportation - Structural A holder of a Master s Degree in Civil or equivalent in the relevant discipline recognized by JKUAT senate and must have a research proposal. DEPARTMENT OF BIOMECHANICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING (BEED) 1. MSc in Soil and Water Applicants must have Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Soil, Water and Environmental ; Agricultural ; Civil from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree with relevant research as evidenced by publications, or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate. 2. M.Sc. in Environmental & Management 3. MSc in Agricultural Processing 4. MSc in Biomechanical Applicants must have a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Soil, Water & Environmental, Agricultural, Mechanical, Civil or Applied Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree with relevant research as evidenced by publications, or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate. This course is offered full time at JKUAT Juja Campus or part time at Nairobi Campus if there are sufficient applicants. Applicants must have a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Biomechanical and Processing ; Agricultural ; Mechanical from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree with relevant research as evidenced by publications, or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate Applicants must have a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Biomechanical and Processing ; Agricultural ; Mechanical from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree with relevant research evidenced by publications, or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate. 4

5. MSc in Biosystems Structural 2. PhD Programmes in:- i) Biomechanical, ii) Soil, Water & Environmental iii) Processing and structures. Applicants must have a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in Biomechanical and Processing ; Agricultural ; Mechanical, Mechatronics or Civil from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, or a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) degree with relevant research evidenced by publications, or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate. Applicants must have a Masters degree in any of the MSc specializations given above from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology or an equivalent degree recognized by the University Senate and must have a research proposal. C. FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY 1. M.Sc. in Biochemistry 2. M.Sc. Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology At least a 2 nd Class Honours (Upper Division) BSc. degree in the relevant field from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. 2 nd Class Honours BSc. degree (Lower Division With and sufficient background in undergraduate Biochemistry and sufficient background in undergraduate Biochemistry. At least second class Honours B.Sc. degree Upper Division in the following areas: Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Computer Sciences, Mathematics and/or Statistics, Physical Sciences, and Health Sciences Sufficient background in Computer Science and programming 3. Ph.D. in Biochemistry M.Sc. in Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology and must have a Ph.D. Research Proposal in the relevant area. DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY 1. Master of Science (MSc.) in Chemistry in the following areas:- - Analytical/Environmental Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry - Organic Chemistry - Physical Chemistry A holder of at least a 2 nd Class Honours (Upper Division) degree having studied Chemistry either as a single subject or as one of the two science subjects at Bachelor s degree level or its equivalent from a recognized University. Under exceptional circumstances a holder of at least a 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division) degree having studied chemistry as either a single subject or as one of the two Science subjects at Bachelor s degree level or its equivalent may be registered, provided that the candidate produces evidence of proven postgraduate research ability. DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY 1. 2. M.Sc. in Zoology in the following areas:- - Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries - Immunology - Agricultural Entomology - Animal Parasitology - Conservation Biology Ph.D. in Zoology Holders of at least a 2 nd Class Honours (upper division) Degree in Biological Sciences having studied Zoology as a major or regular subject from JKUAT or its equivalent from a University recognized by the Senate Holders of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) Degree in Biological Sciences having studied Zoology as a major or regular subject may under exceptional circumstances be registered provided that the candidate produces acceptable evidence of research ability in any one of the areas of specialization in Zoology. M.Sc. in a relevant field and must have a Ph.D. research proposal PhD courses will be offered in the same disciplines as M.Sc. above 5

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY 1. M.Sc. degree in Botany in the following areas:- - Plant Physiology - Plant Ecology - Plant Morphology - Plant Taxonomy - Plant Breeding - Genetics - Mycology - Phycology - Microbiology - Molecular Biology - Economic Botany A holder of at least 2 nd Class Honours (Upper Division) in Biological Sciences having studied Botany as a major or regular subject from JKUAT or its equivalent from a University recognized by Senate. Under exceptional circumstances a holder of a 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division) degree in Biological Sciences having studied Botany as a major or regular subject, provided the candidate produces evidence of having conducted research in a relevant area from an institution recognized by JKUAT Senate. 2. Ph.D. in Botany M.Sc. in Botany in any of the specialized areas indicated in M.Sc. above and must have a Ph.D. research proposal DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE 1. M.Sc. Statistics A holder of a B.Sc. Statistics or Quantitative degree with at least Upper 2 nd Class Honours, having studied Statistics as a single subject or as a major of two subjects studied at the degree level at JKUAT or at any other University recognized by the Senate. Under exceptional circumstances a holder of a Bachelors degree with Lower 2 nd Class Honours or its equivalent may be eligible for registration provided that the candidate can produce evidence of proven research ability in an appropriate branch of Statistics. 2. M.Sc. Applied Statistics Qualifications as above for M.Sc. Statistics or a holder of a quantitative degree, not necessarily in Statistics, with at least Upper Second Class Honours, from JKUAT or any other University recognized by the Senate, but with work in Statistics. However, if an applicant s background in Statistics is insufficient, satisfactory auditing of some units taught in the undergraduate programme may be required during the first year of study, as directed by the Chairman of the Department. 3. Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics A holder of a Bachelors degree with at least Lower 2 nd Class Honours, having studied Statistics as a single subject or as a major of two subjects studied at the degree level at JKUAT or at any other University recognized by the Senate. 3. PhD in the following areas: i) Mathematical Statistics ii) Applied Statistics iii) Biostatistics A holder of a quantitative degree, not necessarily in Statistics, with at least Lower 2 nd Class Honours, from JKUAT or any other University recognized by the Senate, but with relevant work in Statistics. However, if an applicant s background in Statistics or Mathematics is insufficient, satisfactory audit of some undergraduate units as advised by the Chairman will be required. A holder of a Masters Degree in the relevant area from JKUAT or any other University recognized by the Senate and a Ph.D. research proposal 6

M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics A holder of at least B.Sc., 2 nd Class Honours (Upper Division) degree having studied Mathematics either as a single subject or as the major of two science subjects with a substantial number of units of Applied Mathematics studied at the degree level at JKUAT or its equivalent from a recognized University/Institution by JKUAT Senate. Under exceptional circumstances a holder of B.Sc. Must be a holder of Bachelor of Science - 2 nd Class Honours (Lower Division) in Mathematics as a single subject or as a major of two subjects studied at the degree level at JKUAT or from a recognized university institution by University Senate. A holder of Quantitative degree not necessarily in Mathematics with at leave 2 nd class honours (lower) from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the JKUAT Senate but with relevant work in Mathematics. However, if an applicant s background in Statistics is insufficient, satisfactory auditing of some units taught in the undergraduate programme may be required by the department. A holder of M.Sc. degree in the relevant field from a recognized university/institution by the JKUAT Senate and a Ph.D. research proposal. DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS 1. M.Sc. in Physics in the following areas:- - Physics of materials - Electronics and instrumentation - Renewable energy and the environment - Optics and lasers - Geophysics - Nuclear and atomic Physics - Fundamental physics - Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics A holder of B.Sc. degree with at least upper 2 nd class honours degree, having studied physics either as a major subject or as a regular subject with mathematics. Applicants with a lower 2 nd class honours may be admitted if they can produce evidence of postgraduate research ability in a relevant area The programme will be offered in two modes:- a) Experimental Physics - coursework in the 1 st year of study and thesis in the 2 nd year of study b) Theoretical Physics coursework in the 1 st and 2 nd year of study and a project in the form of dissertation in the 2 nd year of study. 2. Ph.D. in Physics Applicants must be holders of a M.Sc. degree in Physics in one of the above areas of specialization Have a qualification acceptable by the university senate as equivalent to M.Sc. in Physics and must have a research proposal. 7

M.Sc. in Biotechnology Holder of a B.Sc. degree with at least a 2 nd Class Honors (Upper Division) in Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Biochemistry, Food Science and Technology, Horticulture or Agriculture from JKUAT or from any other institution recognized by JKUAT Senate, Under exceptional circumstances, holders of B.Sc. degree with the 2 nd Class Honors (Lower Division) in the subject areas listed above provided that the candidate produces evidence of proven postgraduate research ability in the relevant disciplines. 2. Ph.D. Biotechnology Holder of an MSc Degree done through course work, research and thesis for at least two academic years. E. INSTITUTE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (ICSIT) 1. M.Sc. in Software Holders of a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science/Computer Technology/Information Technology, Mathematics and Computer science, and Electronic of at least Upper 2 nd Class Honours from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. Holders of a B.Sc. degree in a related discipline:, Mathematics, Statistics and Physics of at least Upper 2 nd Class Honours and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science of a minimum Credit grade from an institution recognized by senate or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by Senate. F. SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING SCIENCES (SABS) 1. Masters of Urban Design A holder of at least 2 nd Class Honors Upper Division Bachelor of Architecture Degree from JKUAT or any other institution recognized by the University Senate. A holder of the Bachelor s degree in either Architecture, Urban Design or Landscape Architecture, or Bachelor of Science or Arts degree in Urban and Region Planning from any other institution, which is recognized by JKUAT Senate as being of equivalent academic standard. Candidates admitted to Master of Architecture Degree by collaborating Universities through the SIU-NOMA Programme shall be eligible for registration for approved units at JKUAT. A holder of any other academic qualification(s) acceptable to JKUAT Senate as being equivalent to or higher than those specified above. 2.
