Page 3 Vice Chancellor s Message Welcome All over the word institutions contribute in policy making, shaping government decisions and driving economic growth. My vision is to make the University of Abuja among the first 3 in Nigeria, among the first 10 in Africa and among the first 200 in the world. The University of Abuja is the image of the Federal Universities based on its strategic location at the Federal Capacity. In driving forward this will be our key word. We will drum this to the ears of the FG. The Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development Studies is not an exception. The institution is poised to meet and address present day challenges of leadership and development by partnering with government, the corporate world, security agencies in area of training and capacity development. Under my watch, the institute will develop a faculty with personnel that buy into the vision and mission of the University of Abuja at large. The institute s faculty will strive to build a generation of leaders, whose core focus and training will be leadership and development. Like its counterparts around the world, the institute will draw participants for its short courses from all over the world with a focus on building leaders for the next generation. The institute has the goal to become the hotspot for leadership training and development not only in Nigeria but in Africa and the world at large. Let all hands be applied diligently to the task at hand - creating responsible leaders. Professsor M.U. Adikwu, FAS, FPSN, FSTANM MIPAN

Contents Page 4 c Director s Welcome In 2007 Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Development studies was set up to provide the foundation for building leaders who have the skills to execute the processes that drive National, Regional and Global change. We have a lofty mandate which we are passionate and committed to building to strengthen the manpower base of institutions and relevant organizations through training, research and advocacy while providing an intellectual platform for peace, leadership and developmental discourse, and dissemination of ideas and research findings so as to generate critical thoughts and practical approaches to issues of policy and practice. We believe that a country is only as good as her institutions. Institutions are only as good as its people. People are only as good as their training. Our mission is to change Nigeria by changing her leaders using all the tools available to us our incredible faculty, our love for Nigeria, our passion for development and never ending toil for excellence. We run three types of programs: Masters Degree Programs Post-Graduate Diploma Programs Executive and Professional Certificate Courses These programs are designed to be transformational. We do not just talk and read up old research. We combine classroom training with sessions in real life situations where leadership will be shown. Our approach to our curriculum is this our research must set the standard for insight, ethics and relevance. Anything short of this is not up to the ideals of the man for which our institution was named. Our comprehensive approach provides hands-on teaching and newly learned skills are applied in the setting of an actual leadership environment. We dedicate ourselves to being different from other institutions through a practical and research oriented approach to our programs. We are blessed by the strong support we get from our Vice chancellor, and partners who share our passion to change the world, starting from where we stand. With great potential beckoning, we urge you to join us on this exciting journey. Dr. UWAKWE ABUGU DIRECTOR

Our Vision The institute's vision is to be a high rate global centre for manpower and skills development Our Mission We aim to raise leaders in all sectors of human endeavour by empowering them with the skills to convert insight into results

Why SMIPLDS? Execution Oriented Training

Page 7 The SMIPLDS Advantage We have all been told that knowledge is power. That the goal of education is to empower the mind to think, to give the individual the capacity to do. But really, how does knowledge empower? Without question, a lot of academic programs have been focused on awarding certificates, not by design, but because the process of education focuses too much on pedagology rather than in stimulating intellectual engagement in an environment that gives the student the ability to move from theory to execution. This is the central distinctive feature of Sultan Maccido Institute - we educate for results. Every program is designed to facilitate execution oriented training and research. We commence this process at the admission stage - we admit only candidates who convince the admissions committee that they have the right intellectual curiosity to conduct deep research, as well as the integrity to put their theories to test in the real world. Thereafter we ensure that our candidates spend no less than a third of their time interning at leading public and private sector institutions where the theories they are taught will be utilised. There our candidates gather information, study systems and gain insight into the actual challenges of leadership for results. We are committed to excellence in all our programs. Skills learned during the program will prepare participants for excelling in the increasingly complex scenarios that challenge leaders in all fields. As your training advances, so do you. And as you advance, so does your career. Our ultimate goal is to create alumni that are world beaters, having the skills to generate ideas and turn them into solutions that benefit society. Leadership is the art of doing, so we train you to do.
