2015-16 Speeding To Read Guidelines Guided Reading Books Fiction/Non-Fiction Books Text Explanation How often can I count them toward the STR competition? NASCAR or INDYCAR-themed Books Chapter Books Graphic Novels When read independently, they count. They do not count when read with the teacher at the guided reading table/group. When read independently, each book counts. Any NASCAR or INDYCARthemed book counts as 2 books toward the goal. Each just right chapter book counts as follows: K-1: Each chapter is 1 book. 2: 1 chapter book = 4 picture books 3-5: Every 150 pages counts as 1 chapter book. When read independently, each book counts independently- at home or at school. These are just right books, so they will count for all grades K-5 when read independently. independently - at home or at school. Since it is a bonus book, it can only be read and counted once Each chapter book counts toward the STR competition. As many that are read independently at home or school. STEM-related books for NASCAR Acceleration competition K-1: Each chapter is one book 3-5: Every 150 pages counts as One book independently- at home or at school; this book should be counted in the overall competition as well as the STEM book competition
Guidelines For Re-Reading Text Re-reading helps children become better readers. Students in K-5 may re-read a book as many times as they want. Every time a student completes a book, it should be added to their Pages In A Book Some students may refuse a book because it has 151-299 pages. Let s not discourage reading because of the number of pages. Books beyond 150 pages may be counted toward another book. (Example: A book of 175 gets the student 1 chapter book plus 25 toward another). Treat the pages as a rollover toward the next book. Shorter Chapter Books Some 2 nd and 3 rd graders might be venturing into shorter chapter books between 30-100 pages. You must look at the book. If it has pictures and words on each page (50% pictures, 50% words), then it will take two (2) of these to make one (1) chapter book. You have to look at the words on the page. School Reading vs. Home Reading Grade What counts at school? What counts at home? Kindergarten 1 st Grade 2 nd through 5 th Grade 1 read-aloud per day by the teacher counts as 1 book for each 1 read-aloud per day by the teacher counts as 1 book for each Any books recorded on their school reading log count for each Any books read independently by the child, or read aloud to the child, and recorded on the Any books read independently by the child, or read aloud to the child, and recorded on the Any books recorded on the Scale of 100 books: 1 chapter book=4 picture books; 4x25 chapter books=100. Scale of 25 books: 4 picture books=1 chapter book; 100/4=25.
Standard Reading Goals For Students At Each School At each of the four turns, students are challenged to reach a minimum goal of: - Kindergarten 2 nd Grade: 25 picture books per turn - 3 rd 5 th Grade: Six (6) chapter books per turn In addition to the student reaching their goal for any individual honors, it also has an impact on the classroom and school totals for additional honors. NASCAR Acceleration Reading Competition Within STR NASCAR is partnering with Texas Motor Speedway to bring another benefit to the students for the upcoming STR season. NASCAR Acceleration is a STEM program that NASCAR created in 2015 and identified an avenue to make it a seamless integration into Speeding To Read. NASCAR will have a competition among the students for every Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) related book they read during the STR competition. If a student reads one STEM-related book during the year, that student will receive an individual medal from NASCAR. NASCAR also will reward the students, classrooms and schools that read the most STEM-related books during the Speeding To Read competition. NASCAR will provide guidelines for the program as well as suggested books from Scholastic. School vs. School Competition The schools competing will be split into two divisions, with champions coming both both divisions. The overall champion will be the division champion with the highest percentage that have met their goals through each turn and then for the school year. School administrators will determine the divisions and they will officially be announced at the kick-off at Texas Motor Speedway. Due to the difference in school enrollment sizes, we will determine the school standings in each division by the percentage of students from the entire enrollment number that met or exceeded their reading goals at that segment (turn) of the competition. The school that has the highest percentage overall through the first three turns will have the perpetual championship trophy displayed at their school until the next turn is completed. Following Turn 4, the overall champion will be based off how many students reached or exceeded the reading goal for the entire year (100 books K-2 and 24 chapter books for 3-5). Should multiple schools be tied, the tiebreaker will be the total books read divided by the number of students to provide an average per student. Classroom Competition (K-2 and 3-5) The classroom leaders will be determined by the average of books read per student in the respective classroom (Number of books read by the classroom divided by the number of students. Ex. Class of 20 students reads 200 books for an average of 10.0 per student). Top classrooms will be recognized at the end of Turn 1, Turn 2, Turn 3 and Turn 4 for the amount of books they read during that Turn segment. The overall Speeding To Read champions will be determined by their cumulative average for all four turns and crowned at the season-ending awards assembly at TMS.
Individual Competition (K-2 and 3-5) The K-2 students must read a minimum of 25 picture books and 3-5 students a minimum of six (6) chapter books at the end of each turn to meet their reading goal at that point. Top readers will be recognized by the total number of books read DURING each turn and not cumulative to that point. Top readers will be recognized at the end of Turn 1, Turn 2, Turn 3 and Turn 4 for the amount of books they read during that Turn segment. These students will be your Turn Leaders. The overall Speeding To Read champions one from kindergarten through fifth grade will be determined by their cumulative total for all four turns and crowned at the season-ending awards assembly at TMS. From that group, we also will crown K-2 and 3-5 overall champions. Should they fall behind early or have a student in their division that is extremely dominant, this format should promote more students remaining engaged in the program because they have four separate opportunities during the school year to excel and be recognized as a Turn leader. Logging Results At the close of the competition for each turn, every school is responsible for logging their results for their students. To make this program successful and crown the rightful students, it is imperative that we have accurate logs and accountability from the teachers and the parents. If you notice a dramatic jump in a student s reading totals for a turn, please ensure its accuracy since it affects individual students, classrooms and the school totals. Each school will receive an Excel file template from Texas Motor Speedway to be distributed to every school for logging their respective students. Teachers or designated administrator will fill in their name, grade and school along with the first and last names of each student in the classroom. There will be two columns in each turn one for the books read by the student in that turn and another for the number of STEM-related books read in that turn. Below each turn will be the categories of Total Number of Books Read (by the class for that turn), Total Number of Accelerated Books Read (by the class for that turn), Total Number of Students in the Class, Average Number of Books Per Student in the Class and Percentage of Students Who Met Their Goal for the Turn. Some of those categories will be automatically tabulated by the Excel sheet while other categories will have to be manually inputted by the teachers. New students can be added to the sheet as well with N/A in the Turn segments they have missed so they do not calculate as not reaching the goal for the classroom or school for the Turns that they did not compete in. The TMS scoring administrator in which the teachers will email their results to at each turn is TMS Media Relations Assistant Mallorie Anderson. If you have questions, she can be reached at manderson@texasmotorspeedway.com or (817) 215-8524 (office). The Key Dates document lists the deadlines for each turn. It is important that every teacher inputs their classroom on time since it can affect the individuals, classroom and overall school scoring per turn and overall come championship time.
STR Website Texas Motor Speedway created a website dedicated to the Speeding to Read program at www.speedingtoread.com. The website is public and houses results, press releases, photo gallery, video, FAQs, mission statement, overview of the program, sponsors and TMS contact info. We encourage all schools to make your administration and parents aware of the site since their class, school or child could be featured in the news, photos or video portions of the site. The site also will have a password-protected area for principals and administration that will include materials such as the program guidelines, key dates, templates for certificates, etc. School Websites We respectfully request that each school help us publicize the program and your school s successes in Speeding To Read on your school website. Let s showcase those students and classrooms that are the elite at your school and especially in the competition against thousands of other students. We share the results at each turn with the schools so they know where students and classrooms ranks, including who is tops in your school. We also produce a press release at each turn recognizing the top school and students that can be used or adapted for your websites. -TMS-
