MONROE TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL CAREER ACADEMY Business, Law & Government Communication & the Arts Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics At Monroe Township High School, we recognize the importance of exploring career opportunities as part of a complete learning experience. The Career Academy structure is designed to meet the needs of all students, including those students who have a clear and definitive idea of their career path and those who would like to explore more broadly. All students will select an academy that will help guide their course selection and high school experience. FLEX Academy All incoming freshman will be part of the FLEX Academy, which, in most cases, provides small learning communities where students share the same teachers for their core courses. It also provides for guided choice of electives with their counselor. Beyond freshman year, if students like the flexibility of exploring career options through their electives, they can remain in this flexible academy. By selecting FLEX BLG, FLEX CA or FLEX STEM, they will receive faculty-based career exploration support and career consultant services while choosing electives in their area of interest. Most of the school population will benefit greatly from this experience. Structured Academies During their freshman year, some students may express a high level of interest in a specific career. The structured academy is an application-based program that will provide students that meet specific criteria with a structured, small learning community experience. Students in a structured academy will have a 3-year prescribed course of study that focuses on a specific career. The goals of the structured academy include: Learning Paths: a specialized learning path rich in cross-curricular experiences and electives in the area of interest. Small Learning Communities: similar to workplace environments, provide the platform for project-based learning experiences that deepen knowledge. Empowered Relationships: encourage camaraderie within the academy and staff as well as a mentor-mentee experience that promotes student growth and development in a way that mirrors the workplace environment. Culminating Experience: complete a capstone project while working with a mentor during senior year. The structured academy options include: BLG Business, Law & Government Accounting & Finance, Business Management, Law & Government, and Marketing, Sales & Service CA Communication and the Arts Digital Arts, Digital Video Production, Fine Arts and Performing Arts STEM Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Biomedical/Pre-Med, Engineering and Information Technology

The Structured Academy Experience While the experiences will vary for each academy, the general experience in any of the structured academies follows this sequence: Commitment and Scheduling Participation in a structured career academy is a commitment to take seriously. In order to focus on a specific career area, students accepted into a structured career academy program will follow a prescribed course schedule. Courses are selected to provide students with the ideal experience. The prescribed schedule for each academy can be found on the following pages. It should be noted that there is limited elective/course choice and there will NOT be any allowances for schedule changes even over the summer.
