CHARLOTTE-MECKLENBURG SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS 2012-2013 Only students in grades 7-12 may participate in interscholastic athletic competition (State Board of Education Regulation). In order to qualify for public school participation, a student must meet the following requirements, but is not limited to: 9 th Grade Must meet local promotion standards 10 th Grade Must meet local promotion standards 11 th Grade Must meet local promotion standards 12 th Grade Must meet local promotion standards Exceptional Children (Grades 9-12) The 2.0 eligibility rule will be waived if (1) I.E.P. goals are being met; (2) satisfactory progress is being made in mainstreamed classes, and (3) has the principal s recommendation. Extended Year (Grades 9-12) Grades received in extended year courses (2010) which are repeated from failed year courses may be substituted for 4 th quarter grades when computing the athletic grade point averages for fall competition. **High School: Students on 4 x 4 or A/B class schedules must pass 75% of their courses each semester. (3 of 4 or 6 of 8) Students taking a combination (hybrid) of A/B and 4 x 4 must pass 75% of the credit hours in which they are enrolled (count A/B class as one and double 4 x 4 s to get total of 8 ).

Parent Signature Sport Date Rocky River Athletic Student Athlete Guidelines The student athlete must meet all local and state eligibility guidelines. If your child is ineligible, there is an appeal process, for medical reasons only. Documentation must be provided to the school before hardship can be considered. NO EXCEPTIONS a. Student will not receive a varsity letter if he/she becomes ineligible. 2. Rocky River s athletic department and administration will not tolerate poor sportsmanship from student-athletes, parents, coaches, and spectators. 3. The use of alcohol, drugs, or any other controlled substance will result in immediate dismissal from the team. (Includes use on any CMS campus) a. The student-athlete will lose his/her eligibility for the reminder of the year. b. Student-athlete will not receive a varsity letter. 4. Profanity will not be tolerated during the school day or at any CMS sport related event. 5. Student-Athletes will serve as role models in the classrooms a. Academic work must be completed on a high level. b. Classroom behavior must be appropriate. 6. Athletes are expected to be at every practice. 7. All injuries will be reported to the athletic trainer immediately. a. Parents will be contacted immediately with the extent of the injury. b. All student athletes must complete an IMPACT concussion pre-assessment test. 8. Student-Athletes cannot participate in any activity during his/her suspension. 9. Ejections will not be tolerated at Rocky River High School. NCHSAA penalties include: a. Person ejected will sit out 2 contests in football. b. Person ejected will sit out 4 contests in all other sports. c. The student athlete will be removed from the team for the season if fighting or profanity is involved. 10. Uniforms will not be worn to school without the coaches permission. a. The student athlete is responsible for any damage that may occur to his/her uniform if worn for anything other than its intended purpose b. All uniforms will be inventoried at the end of the season; the student athlete is responsible for any lost items. 11. The student athlete is expected to represent Rocky River and the athletic department in a positive manner on all athletic trips. Misbehavior of any kind will not be tolerated by the athletic department. 12. Coaches may have additional expectations of student-athletes. a. Student-athletes have the right to have disciplinary issues reviewed by the athletic director. 13. NO HAZING! Hazing will not be tolerated. a. Hazing results in immediate disciplinary action and removal from the team. By signing this document we give our son/daughter permission to participate in athletics at Rocky River High School. We agree to follow all rules outlined by the NCHSAA, CMS and Rocky River High School. We give permission for my child to be treated by the athletic training staff, team physician, or EMS in case of an injury. We understand that a student-athlete s address may be checked by Rocky River High School or CMS to verify he/she living at the address in question with legal parents or guardians. I have read and recognize the athletic guidelines for Rocky River High School Athletics. I understand the responsibilities and expectations that Rocky River s athletic department has for student-athletes. Student- Athlete Date Sport(s) Insurance: Athletic Fact Sheet CMS and Rocky River High School requires each student athlete be covered by accident insurance. The Insurance Wavier Form must be signed, it indicates: o As the guardian you give your student athlete permission to participate in CMS athletics. o As the guardian you accept responsibility of maintaining insurance coverage on the student athlete in the event an injury would occur. Acknowledgment of Risk: We acknowledge and understand that our son/daughter may sustain injury while participating in athletic practices or events supervised by the staff of Rocky River High School. We understand that injury can occur even though proper and safe coaching techniques are utilized and precautionary measures are implemented to the fullest by the athletic department. We understand that the term injury includes but is not limited to mild, moderate, severe, and/or catastrophic physical harms, wounds, or other consequences that may happen as a result of participating in an athletic practice or event. We understand the importance of reporting any signs or symptoms to the coaching staff, athletic trainer or athletic director to minimize the risk of further injury while competing in high school athletics. Academic Eligibility: Charlotte- Mecklenburg School (CMS) & North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) set forth the following academic standards for student athletes. Must be promoted to the next grade, earned 2.0 GPA & pass a minimum work load from previous semester (EC eligibility focuses on students IEP and principal s recommendation) Must have 85% attendance from pervious semester and be enrolled in at least half of the minimum academic course load. Must not turn nineteen on or before August 31 of the said school year & have established Rocky River as his/ her home sport school. (If a student changes schools after establishing a sport school the student is ineligible for 365 days, unless the new school is the students home school) Furthermore, a student- athlete cannot play the same sport in the same season at two different schools. NCAA Guidelines: The NCAA has established guidelines by which athletes may be rendered eligible or ineligible for athletic participation at the collegiate level. These include: Minimum proficiency level on national college-board examinations (SAT/ACT) Release form to the NCAA Eligibility Clearinghouse
