Welcome to Cartersville High School Home of the Purple Hurricanes Freshman Orientation Guide Class of 2021 As an incoming freshman, you are getting ready to experience the most exciting four years of your education. Cartersville High School is known f its challenging academic curriculum, its successful fine arts and athletic programs, and its team of dedicated faculty and staff. The purpose of this packet is to familiarize you with the school, the classes offered, and all other aspects of becoming a high school freshman. Two excellent sources f additional infmation are the CHS Student Handbook and the CHS web site. CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Must successfully complete 24 units of credit EACH CARTERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WILL COMPLETE: 4 units of English Language Arts 4 units of Mathematics 4 units of Science 4 units of Social Studies 1 unit of Health and Physical Education 3 units from one me of the following areas: Career Tech Fine Arts Feign Language 4 Electives Hon Graduate = minimum of 2 AP courses and 3.3 GPA (Academic) AND 3.7 GPA (Cummulative) Hon Graduate with Distinction = minimum of 4 AP courses and 3.3 GPA (Academic) AND 3.7 GPA (Cummulative) Valedictian and Salutatian will come from Hon/Graduate with Distinction Promotion Criteria You must obtain a minimum number of units in each grade to be promoted to the next grade. Most semester classes are equivalent to one unit. 5 units required f promotion to the 10 th grade 11 units required f promotion to the 11 th grade 17 units required f promotion to the 12 th grade 24 units required f graduation Please note: If you fail a class required f graduation, you must take it again. Your failing grade remains on your high school transcript and is figured into your GPA. Mid-Term / Final Exam Exemption Policy Each class will administer a mid-term the week preceding Winter Holidays, and a Final Exam to be administered at the end of the school year. To be offered the opptunity to exempt a midterm and/ final exam, a student must: Have one absence f current semester in a class and a grade average of at least 79.5%. Have no me than two absences f current semester in a class and a grade average of at least 84.5%. Have no me than three absences f current semester in a class and a grade average of at least 89.5%. AP and Hon s points will not be added f exemption. NOTE: Being suspended from school, assigned ISS, having me than 3 tardies in a class during the current semester makes a student ineligible f exemption. Page 3

HIGH SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT Research shows that one key fact in determining the success of a student is the involvement of the student in at least one ganization activity. HOPE SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENT FOR CLASS OF 2021 Students entering high school during the 2016-17 school year and after should be prepared f upcoming changes in the HOPE scholarship. There will now be a rig component to the scholarship requiring students to pursue a me challenging class load. Please review the following and contact your student s consel if you have any concerns regarding this new change in legislation. CTAE PATHWAYS Students may complete a Career and Technical Education pathway. These pathways include a sequence of rigous courses. Allied Health & Medicine / Spts Medicine This program introduces students to healthcare science skills and attitudes applicable to healthcare including the concepts of health, wellness, and preventive care. The students will learn basic first aid, athletic training, and nursing assistant skills. * Introduction to Healthcare Science Essentials of Healthcare Allied Health & Medicine Spts Medicine WBL Medical Internship Audio Visual Technology and Film Students will learn how to produce, film, and edit video communication. They will use broadcast equipment and learn how to film and produce commercials and news sties. Periodically, these news sties, interviews with students and teachers, and clips from spting events will be broadcast throughout the school as part of our school show. * Audio Visual Technology and Film I Audio Visual Technology and Film II Audio Visual Technology and Film III WBL Audio Visual Technology and Film Internship Engineering & Technology Engineering and Technology combines hands-on projects with a rigous curriculum to prepare students f the most challenging postsecondary engineering and technology programs. Students will build solid writing, comprehension, calculation, problem-solving, and technical skills as well as experience opptunities to develop fundamental technological literacy as they learn about the histy, systems, and processes of invention and innovation. * Foundations of Engineering and Technology Engineering Concepts Engineering Applications WBL Engineering Internship Graphic Design Graphic Communications and Design is a program designed to familiarize students with the process of creating visually appealing graphic designs. The students learn creative page layout and design using Adobe programs. * Introduction to Graphics and Design Graphic Design and Production Advanced Graphic Design WBL Graphics Internship

Marketing Hospitality, Recreation & Tourism Marketing is the process of anticipating, managing, and satisfying consumers demand f products, services, and ideas. Students participating in the Marketing pathway learn about the strategy that underlies advertising and promotional techniques, business communication, and tourism development. * Marketing Principles Marketing Tourism Essentials Marketing Tourism Management WBL Marketing Internship Entrepreneurship/Small Business The instruction of this program is designed to meet the needs of all high school students, by helping students develop business, economic, and computer literacy knowledge and skills. The Entrepreneurship Program will enable students to be better prepared f the wking environment as well as post-secondary education. Courses must be taken in the der listed below. * Introduction to Business & Technology Legal Environment of Business Entrepreneurship WBL School Ste Internship Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Wking in a state-of-the-art automotive lab, students in the Automotive pathway are taught skills that make them competitive in today s employment market. Our courses are designed to prepare students f post-secondary education as well as future successes in the automotive field. * Basic Maintenance and Light Repair I (Prerequisite to all other courses) Maintenance and Light Repair 2 Maintenance and Light Repair 3 WBL Auto Maintenance and Light Repair Internship * Denotes introducty classes in a pathway that must be completed first in the sequence. Embry-Riddle/Flight Ops Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University offers a dual-enrollment aeronautics program on the CHS campus. Freshmen begin with one non-credit introduction/study skills courses which prepare them f subsequent dual-enrollment courses. The 9th grade Embry-Riddle course is: * Fundamentals of Aerospace These freshman classes are non-college courses within the dual enrollment program and an application is required f participation.
