What is DI? Mission and Vision To teach students the creative process and empower them with the skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.

In other words Destination Imagination Encourages students to HAVE FUN! TAKE RISKS And focus and frame challenges while incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts and service learning.

Who, What, When, Where, Why DI Who What When Where Why Up to 7 team members, from Kindergarten through University Plus one or more Team Managers 6 new challenges each year, focusing on Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational, and Service Learning. Plus Rising Stars, a non competitive challenge for younger students September through May Teams take 2-4 months to solve their Challenge Solutions are assessed at regional, state and global tournaments. Some schools run DI as an after school program, some school districts incorporate the program into their electives curriculum. Learn higher order thinking and improve in creative thinking, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving. Experience the creative process, develop new friendships and learn to work together.

Training Outline 1. What do I do? 2. What do they do? 3. How do we do it? 4. The Rules

I Volunteered to be a Team Manager. Now What?

What is my job? You are about to embark on an amazing opportunity to facilitate a great life-changing journey for a team of learners and yourself! Stand back and allow Destination Imagination participants to own the experience by shaping the journey in their own way. You are there to help the team acquire the skills they lack. Step up and help them learn those skills, but Step aside and give your team members the opportunity to take full ownership of their Challenge solution Let them do it all themselves

How Do We Do IT ALL?

Use These Tools The Creative Solving Process Creative and Critical thinking Instant Challenge

The Creative Solving Process You already know what the problem is. And it is the team s to solve

Use These Tools The Creative Solving Process Creative and Critical thinking Instant Challenge

Creative Thinking Divergent Thinking What is it? generating multiple ideas imagining unusual possibilities making meaningful connections elaborating upon options Lots of ideas!! Highlights: Fun Liberating Exhilarating Open Judgment-free Brainstorming FFOE Mix and Match If you think it, share it

Brainstorming How Blurt it out Structured take turns Sticky Notes Beach ball Guidelines Remain Open State and document ALL ideas Quantity Counts Hitchhike on other s ideas Get an idea from EVERYBODY

Creative thinking - expanded FFOE Fluency, Flexibility, Originality, Elaboration Fluency: generate as many options as possible most important goal Flexibility: generate a number of options from different categories (such as materials, teamwork and performance skills), or generate options that are different from the others. Originality: generate unusual options (such as clever use of words, songs or an unusual combination of materials), or generate some unique options. Elaboration: add details to an option (such as listening to others, adding on to their ideas and using multiple materials to create costumes), or generate some detailed options.

Critical Thinking Convergent Thinking What is it? focusing analyzing, evaluating and judging in order to make effective decisions making choices! This is where conflict occurs. Essential Highlights: Use Tools Objective Ranking Simple Quick Direct Choice Helper More complex More detailed Individual Input Hits and Hot Spots Multi-voting toothpicks Split up tasks See Roadmap, pages 67-84

Creative and Critical Thinking Critical Thinking Creative Thinking You need BOTH to be successful.

Use These Tools The Creative Solving Process Creative and Critical thinking Instant Challenge

Instant Challenge Allows your team to learn to: Assess a situation Define the problem Make a plan Create solutions quickly Worth 25% of your team s overall score at a tournament

Instant Challenge Start small; do only a portion, and build up confidence Read the challenge to the team Let them do it Debrief - ask them questions What did you do well? What can you do better? How can you use each material? See page 41 Roadmap

Task-Based ICs What is the task? build, move, change, protect or communicate Where do you get the most points? What materials do you have? Which are best for the task? How much time do you have? Is this a one or multiple part challenge? Are there any penalties? Take a minute and plan! Get an idea from everyone remember those teamwork points. Don t touch materials until told to do so. STOP when the appraiser calls time. It s still a performance

Lots of Great IC ideas in IDODI resource area And more already included in your manager bag https://www.destinationimagination.org/challenge-program/resource-library/

Dissecting an Instant Challenge What? TASK or PERFORMANCE or HYBRID? (Circle One) Summarize what you are being asked to do in one sentence Where do you get the most points? Put the scoring elements in descending order from greatest to least: How many parts are there and how long is each part? Summarize what must be accomplished in each part. What does the challenge say MUST happen or MUST be done? Remember, if it doesn t say you CAN T, then you CAN. Do you notice any opportunities where this might help? What do you notice as Obvious Obstacles? (What do you notice that will be challenging?) What other things are important to notice about this challenge?

Managing Your Team

What do I do again? PLAY and then Play some more!!!! Let them do as much as they can. Schedule meetings, but go with the flow. Don t DIRECT. Encourage and ask questions. Get an idea from everyone. Find resources and teach skills. Be the safety monitor. Celebrate EVERYTHING.

Meetings One suggestion: 10 minutes Ice Breaker/Warm Up 15 minutes Instant Challenge 30 minutes Team Building / Discussion 30 minutes Central Challenge Development Meetings depend on lots of factors: the age of the participants, when everyone can meet, the mood of the team, the mood of the TM, and how much time you have left before competition
