to Mr. Bingea's Fifth Grade Class! Letter Class Expectations Daily Routines and Procedures Grading Policy Class Schedule Student Information Sheet

Dear Fifth Grade Parents: Hi! My name is John Bingea (Bing - ay'). I will be your child's homeroom teacher this year. I live a mile outside of Delano with my wife, Wanda. I have three adult children; Christopher, Aaron, and Sarah. I enjoy playing guitar and singing, working on the computer, canoeing, fishing, and playing all kinds of sports. I'm a big baseball and Twins' fan! Our family vacation this summer was a road trip to visit the baseball stadiums of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. We also took an annual canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. This is my 26th year teaching in the Delano Public Schools. Eleven years ago I made a move to the Delano Middle School after teaching 15 years at the fourth grade level in the Delano Elementary School. I am very aware of the exciting challenges and changes that your child will experience this year as they move from the elementary school to the middle school. There will be many opportunities for you to share and assist in the development of your child's learning. I encourage you to work with your child daily on his/her homework assignments. I also suggest that you may wish to review your child's work when it's completed. Homework is a very important part of learning academic responsibility and practicing good habits and study skills. Students write daily homework assignments in their agendas. You can also check daily assignments on the "homework webpage" on my classroom website. If you have any questions or concerns during the school year, please feel free to call me at (763) 972-6200 ext. 3509. My email address is jbingea@delano.k12.mn.us. If you have an email address that I could reach you at, please inform me of it or send me an email. I also have a classroom website that you can check for such things as conference schedule, important dates, and class projects. The URL address for the website is http://www.delano.k12.mn.us/bingea. I am anxiously waiting to begin the school year with your child. I know that together we can make this year a year of successful learning and academic achievement that will include many interesting and enjoyable experiences for you and your child. Sincerely, Mr. John Bingea

Class Expectations It is my sincerest desire that during the coming months your child will grow on a personal level both academically and socially. Learning takes place best in an environment where students know they are trusted, appreciated as an individual, and feel safe. It is my goal to provide this environment for each child. The overwhelming majority of Delano students consistently make appropriate choices for their behavior. We will continue to develop and grow in the use of appropriate social skills and problem solving skills this year. All students will be recognized for using these skills throughout the year by individual praise, notes, and special classroom activities. The following are my classroom behavior expectations: 1. RESPECT the rights and property of others. 2. Be RESPONSIBLE for your own behavior. 3. Act in a SAFE manner. Do the best you can with schoolwork and behavior. Complete homework accurately and on time. Listen carefully and participate in all learning situations and activities. Fifth grade students together will also write a set of classroom expectations that will be consistent across all fifth grade classrooms. Students who consistently choose not to follow these expectations will receive the consequences outlined in the Middle School Discipline Policy. See "Discipline Policy" in the "Student Handbook" found in the student agenda. We will be practicing appropriate behaviors that will assist your child in meeting classroom expectations. Please review the expectations with your child, then sign and return the form below. Thank you for your support. Any time you have questions or concerns, please email, write, or phone. I will respond as soon as possible.

Daily Routines and Procedures Next Week in Fifth Grade At the end of each week, you will be receiving a short newsletter to inform you of what your child will be studying the following week along with any upcoming events. Gold Folders Gold folders will be passed out every Friday. In the Gold Folders will be corrected work, important announcements, and the "Next Week in Fifth Grade" weekly class letter. Please check, sign, and return the folder by the following Monday. This weekly class letter is also posted on my classroom website. Agendas We use agendas everyday to record assignments. This is something you should expect to see everyday. The students will be recording everything we do during the day. Only the circled assignments are homework. The agenda is an excellent place for you to write a note if you need to communicate something to me. Make sure to remind your child to show me the agenda if you have written a note to me. Healthy Snacks Your child is invited to bring a healthy snack to eat mid-morning. Classes In 5th grade, we do switch for some classes. I will be teaching all subjects except for Science and Health which will be taught by Mrs. Olmscheid. Some students also may have a different reading and/or math teacher. If you have questions regarding Science or Health please contact Mrs. Olmscheid at (763) 972-6200 ext. 3630 or email at tberggren@delano.k12.mn.us. A few students may also switch for Reading and/or Math based on ability level determined by past test scores and teacher recommendation. Being Absent Your child needs to bring a note from home and his/her agenda to the office before school begins. It is your child's responsibility to get the work he/she missed. If you wish to pick up the work, please call the middle school office and they will notify us. Vacations Students who are absent for an extended period of time due to vacations will be responsible for collecting their missing homework upon their return.

Field Trip Fifth Graders will go on a three day environmental field trip to Long Lake Conservation Camp (LLCC) in May. More information will follow in the spring of 2010. Birthdays Students are "invited" to bring treats for the entire class on their birthday (this is optional). Summer birthdays will be given a half-birthday date. Media Center (Library) Students will visit the Media Center on a weekly basis. Students will be required to have a novel (chapter book) available for silent reading times.
