Year 11 Flightpaths Hand luggage DO THIS TONIGHT: The qualities of growth mindset are the hand luggage that students and their families should keep with them at all times during the Year 11 journey. Tonight, take 10 minutes to decide the growth mindset qualities that your daughter knows are secure and those that need family support to ensure that she achieves her personal best at the end of Year 11: 1 = Yes! This is one of my strengths 3 = Help! I can t do this on my own 2 = Sometimes. Year 11 Flightpaths Group discounts Students who achieve their personal best are not solo travellers. Their experience of seeking, shaping and securing success is underpinned by dynamic partnerships between teachers, students and their families. Family fellow travellers look round the next corner to pack a spare charger before hysterics break out or hand out bottled water before headaches start. Families need to join the Year 11 staff team in school and are invited to join the following events: Year 11 Visa assemblies: wk. bg. 16.10.17 an invaluable opportunity to be on important deadlines, events and requirements and to meet the staff team supporting your daughter. Additional Information GCSE English Year 11 students will sit their GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature examinations in June 2018 a total of four examinations. By Christmas 2017, students will have completed a GCSE English Language practice paper in the form of two assessed pieces, in addition to sitting a Pre-Public Examination in GCSE English Literature. After Christmas, all assessed pieces and practice papers will relate to specific aspects of the examinations. Students should ensure that they have prepared and revised for these assessed pieces and examinations, as directed by their teachers. Revision in school Students will be refining their skills for the GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature examinations throughout Year 11. Some areas still need to be taught in school but other units, such as the Literature Poetry Unit, can be revised immediately, as your daughter was taught the poetry unit as part of the Year 10 course. Your daughter s teacher will be offering revision strategies and information to guide revision at home. Revision will take place in taught lessons in the Spring Term, as well as in additional booster sessions. It is likely these booster sessions will be offered on Mondays, after school, in the weeks leading up to the Pre-Public Examinations in December 2017 and before the actual public examinations in June 2018. Some teachers may also offer other opportunities for students to cover examination preparation during lunch times or after school. Individual students will be told when to attend these sessions. Brekkie Boosters take place before each of the real GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature examinations. They enable students to have breakfast, see their English teacher and ask last-minute questions before the examination. Revision guides are available from the English office and on sale during the Year 11 Information Evening. We would encourage students to purchase the guides to support their revision and learning in lessons, as well as at home. Revision at home We are very grateful to families for their support in encouraging students to remember that English revision is accessible at any time and anywhere. The old adage, You can t revise for English is a myth! In addition to re-reading and revising the set texts for GCSE English Literature ( Romeo and Juliet - Shakespeare; An Inspector Calls JB Priestley; A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens; the Love and Relationships poetry anthology; and Unseen poetry ), students also need to practise reading and writing skills for GCSE English Language: this includes the reading of 19th, 20th and 21st Century non-fiction and literary non-fiction extracts and articles, as well as writing skills for descriptive and imaginative pieces and writing to express a viewpoint. English Revision Guides Revision guides can be purchased from the English Faculty during school hours: Collins AQA GCSE English All-In-One Revision: Language & Literature: 5.00 (RRP 10.99) AQA Anthology of Poetry: Love & Relationships. The Poetry Guide for the Grade 9-1 Course: 3 (RRP 5.95) Unseen Poetry Exam Board: AQA. Additional Information GCSE Mathematics Year 11 students should ensure from September onwards that they have all of the necessary equipment for every Mathematics lesson, as well as for each of the three GCSE Mathematics examinations: calculator, compass, protractor, ruler, pencil, rubber and black pen. Revision in school In the Autumn term, your daughter will be completing the Year 11 scheme of work and following a revision plan in lessons. Students will be set topic home works by their teachers. Past examination papers will be set as homework from January 2018 onwards, to enable teachers and students to assess gaps in knowledge and understanding and then to address the required learning directly. Mathematics teachers will also be available on a drop-in basis for extra help or advice during the Autumn term. After-school targeted booster sessions for GCSE Mathematics will take place every Wednesday, from January 2018 onwards, following analysis of the GCSE Mathematics Pre-Public Examination in December. Brekkie Boosters will also be scheduled before each of the real GCSE examinations. Revision at home We expect your daughter to be doing her own independent revision and for this work to be recorded in her Independent Learning Log in her exercise book and signed by parents. The following resource MathsWatch CD will assist her. It can be bought for 4.50, paid for at the Finance Office and collected from Room 41. Recommended Maths Apps Mathematics Revision Guides The Collins Higher Mathematics package costs 5.00 and is a combined revision guide, workbook and answer book. It, too, can be paid for at the Finance Office and collected from Room 41. Your daughter may have bought a copy previously in Year 9 or Year 10. Useful websites: www.mymaths.co.uk username: blackfen password: circle www.bbcbitesize.co.uk http://corbettmaths.com/ There are a wide variety of applications available for smartphones and tablets that can also be downloaded.
