Senior Capstone Project Overview and Details
Rationale The IHS Senior Capstone Project is a required opportunity for eligible students to participate in a meaningful and authentic job experience during the final two weeks of senior year. Students will have the opportunity to observe and work with professionals as they perform job responsibilities, while also gaining valuable resume experience. Students are encouraged to seek and select a professional job site related to any career interest they may have. The time required for the project must meet or exceed 50 hours of job shadowing. Important Details 1. Students must be classified as a senior and on track to graduate with all required credits. 2. All 40 hours of community service must be completed. 3. Students must be passing all current classes through 4th quarter. 4. Students must turn in all books, paid fees and fines, and have the school Chromebook turned in by the appropriate deadline. 5. Students must arrange the Community Sponsor location and be responsible for his/her own transportation. 6. Proposal, with all signatures, must be submitted to the Faculty Advisor by the appropriate deadline. 7. Excessive discipline record, absences and/or tardiness will disqualify a student s participation. 8. During Project students should not be present on school grounds unless arrangements have been made with the Faculty Advisor or the student is participating in extra-curricular school events. 9. Students may NOT participate in the Senior Capstone Project at Independence Primary, Independence Middle or Independence High School. 10. Students considering projects in teaching or careers in education must go to other districts to broaden their view and experiences. 11. Students should see Mr. McGuinness with any Capstone questions. Faculty Advisor Role The faculty advisor acts as a consultant to the student. The advisor helps the student with submitting the project proposal, determining reasonable objectives, monitoring progress, assisting with unexpected obstacles, and conducting the final exit interview. The advisor also acts as a liaison with the Community Sponsor. Community Sponsor Role The community sponsor helps the student organize his/her project, advises the student as he/she follows through on his/her project proposal, signs the student timesheet, and completes an evaluation form at the close of the project. Pathway Options There are a number of pathways that satisfy the Senior Project requirement. Senior Capstone Project Overview and Details Continued... Journal Instructions Every student participating in the Senior Capstone Project must keep a journal. Journal entry details: 1. Use a standard spiral notebook (8 1/2 x 11 inches), in which you record an entry every day during project time. 2. Include the exact hours that you worked each day at the top of the page. 3. Use complete sentences. 4. Consist of a minimum of two paragraphs : a. Paragraph 1 Describe exactly what you did on a particular day. b. Paragraph 2 Write a personal reaction or evaluation of what you did that day. Some ideas for your consideration might include: Did you like what you were doing? Why or why not? Why do you suppose you were asked to do a certain activity? Did everything happen exactly as you expected it to, or were there some surprises? How will you benefit from what you are learning? Senior Capstone Project Exit Interview The following must be included in your Project Exit Interview: a. Describe the general and specific benefits you derived from this experience. Describe both positive and negative experiences. b. State any specific skills or procedures you learned. c. Explain any abstract qualities you learned or discovered that you already had. (i.e. self-reliance, self-discipline, self-motivation, compassion for the ill and disabled, patience and understanding for the young, perseverance, etc.) d. Share general thoughts/suggestions regarding the senior project format/experience. e. Be sure that your community The role of the Community Sponsor: The role of the community sponsor is essential to the success of the Senior Capstone Project at Independence High School. As responsible men and women in the community, you will play an active part in the student s learning experience. In playing a dual role as a student mentor and sponsor, you will provide the student a concept of the adult work world. As a sponsor, you will be asked to accept the following responsibilities: 1. Help the student organize his/her project. 2. Advise and guide the student as he/she follows through on his/her project proposal. 3. Sign a weekly time sheet to indicate that he/she has completed the required hours. 4. To complete an evaluation form at the close of the project and mail to the IHS High School Principal. The following is additional pertinent information that we feel you will find useful: 1. The Senior Project begins on May 16, 2018 and continues through May 30, 2018. 2. Students are to shadow a minimum of four hours per day (excluding their lunch hours) and a maximum of eight hours. 3. Attendance and punctuality are important. Absences must be made up. 4. A student may NOT be paid for his/her project work. 5. No relative may be in a direct line of supervision for the student. He/she may not work at a relative s place of business. 6. Each student will also choose a faculty advisor. The advisor will further act as a liaison between the community sponsor and the school.
