Trigonometry Madison Area Technical College Fall 2011 Syllabus Course Information Catalog Number: 20-804-213 Class Number: 40458 Schedule: TTh 10:30am-12:20pm Location: West Room 347 Dates: 8/30/2011-12/22/2011 Credits: 3 Instructor Information Instructor: Sarah Bannen Email: sccunningham@matcmadison.edu Phone: (608) 246-6071 Office hours in Truax 260A: MW 12:30-1:15 Office hours in West 341: TTh 12:30-1:15 Description In this course you will study the six trigonometric functions and their inverse functions; solve right and oblique triangles; know and apply basic identities and simplify trigonometric expressions using identities; solve trigonometric equations; graphing trigonometric functions; understand and apply De Moivre s theorem and the nth-root theorem; understand and use complex numbers and polar coordinates; and solve application problems that rely on trigonometry. Prerequisite: College Algebra, 20-804-212 with a grade of C or better or appropriate placement score. Supplies The required textbook is Trigonometry, ninth edition by Lial, Hornsby, and Miller. 9th Ed. 2009. McGraw-Hill. ISBN #0321528859. Source: Madison College bookstore. A scientific calculator is also required, and a graphing calculator is recommended. Bring your calculator and a pencil to every class. We will do in-class activities that are required for your attendance grade, and you may use your calculator for every test. Grading Component Point Value Number Total Percentage Homework* 5 38 180 18% Practice Tests 25 8 200 20% Tests 100 4 400 40% Final Exam 200 1 200 20% Attendance* 1 30 20 2% Total Possible 1000 100% A [92%, 100%] AB [88%, 92%) B [82%, 88%) BC [78%, 82%) C [72%, 78%) D [65%, 72%) F [0%, 65%) (*You can get 10 extra points for perfect homework and 10 extra points for perfect attendance.) 1

Trigonometry Syllabus Page 2 of 7 Homework (18% of your grade) There will be homework assigned for each section covered in class (see the schedule below). The homework assignments will be due on the day the practice test for that chapter is due. No late homework is accepted. Here is how the homework is graded, out of 5 points per assignment: One problem from the section will be chosen and graded out of 3 points based on neatness, the correct steps being shown, and the correctness of the final answer. You will not get credit for this problem if you do not show your work. You will get a possible 2 points for the completeness of the assignment. This includes whether it is stapled and has your name on it. Although you may turn in homework up to the day the practice test for that chapter is due, it is strongly recommended that you try to keep up with the homework every day. You will understand the day s material better and you will have a chance to ask questions before the tests come along. There are 38 homework assignments, each worth 5 points, for a total of 190 points, but the homework grade will be calculated out of 180. Therefore you can get 10 extra credit points, or 1% of your grade, for perfect homework. Practice Tests (20% of your grade) There will be a Practice Test for every chapter (see the schedule below). The Practice Tests will give you a good idea of the problems that will be on the tests, so they are your best study guides. They give you a chance to work collaboratively to review for the tests. As with the homework, Practice Tests will not be accepted late. Tests (40% of your grade) There will be 4 tests, approximately one per chapter (see the schedule below). You may use one page of handwritten notes, front only, for the tests. Anyone can take a makeup test within one week of the day the test is handed back. In order to do a makeup test, you must complete a correction packet: on a separate sheet of paper, write new correct solutions for the problems you got wrong, plus sentences explaining what you did wrong. Even if you were absent on the day of the test, you must still complete a correction packet using the blank in-class version of the test, which will be posted on Blackboard on the test day. If your correction packet is not done satisfactorily, I may refuse to let you take the makeup test. Your makeup test grade will be final I will not take the higher of the two grades unless you write do not grade on the makeup test before you turn it in. Final Exam (20% of your grade) There will be a cumulative final exam during exam week. You may bring two pages of handwritten notes to the final exam. There are no makeups on the final. Attendance (2% of your grade) Attendance counts for only 2% of your grade, so it is quite possible (but not easy) to get an A even if you miss a lot of class. Therefore, please do not come unless you are willing to be an active participant. Please don t send text messages, check the internet, or do other distracting things during class. If you do act in a distracting manner during class, you will be given a warning, then asked to leave. You must turn in the in-class activity for the day in order to get credit for attendance for that day. In-class activities will consist of problems that can be done alone or in groups. There are 30 class days, each worth 1 attendance point, but the attendance grade will be calculated out of 20. Therefore you can get 10 extra credit points, or 1% of your grade, for perfect attendance. Partial Credit I am a firm believer in partial credit, so it is always better to make an attempt rather than completely omit a question or blow off an assignment.

Trigonometry Syllabus Page 3 of 7 Blackboard and Madison College Email The course website is on Blackboard (http://blackboard.matcmadison.edu). I will post your grades on an ongoing basis on Blackboard so that you can monitor your progress in the class. I do not accept late work, but we may be able to arrange for you to do it early. If you have an emergency, get in touch with me!
